You would think there would be an exception to halt, fix it, and restart (with a minor deduction tacked on) rather than ruin a whole test for something really out of the ordinary. I'm fairly sure that no rule exists for such exceptions but it should. It's obvious the horse is bothered by something having nothing to do with the rider or temperament.
I worked for shane for a while and I asked them what happened...they never found out what it was! So Shit! Probably just a fly or something like that.
He is one of the best riders australias every seen! i hope to get instruction from him soon. i bet you'll never get to the olympics and win silver "Lassiesuca". his hands are perfect, his seat and posittion is that of a pure Pro.
I dont see any awful riding. For the most part when the horse was tossing his head he kept his hands fairly still and you can see, in the bit at the end, there is actually a loop in them. Maybe he became a little evere in his action to get the horses head back down again, but he had to salvage something. In total there is probably all of thirty seconds where the horse was playing up and he still managed to get some nice work out of him.
he's an awful rider, he is all over the place- which probably doesn't help, also very severe hands which he is trying to use on the horses mouth, he is pulling and tugging, attempting to get the head down, which makes him more resistant...
@dannylova121 i have all lucks half brother... only they could have gotta a dragonfly up their nose.... hahaha i know shane well too very good rider and overall nice guy
awe man i bet he got stung! or a bug flew into his ear. Still, what a great rider and horse. my horse would have not stopped shaking his head the entire time! what a bummer....
I can tell you riding a horse that is fit enough to do the fastest time xc at the olympic games is like getting into a race car when you are just average joe driver. To be able to react as cool and calm as he did deserve a serious round of applause because he did the best he could and controlled the situation. Anyone who says they could have done better I'd like to see you try.
and this is a world class horse allot different from your average ride i think its a credit 2 him like look at how he just kept going and gave his horse a big pat at the end thats a lot more than most would do:)
well i think he did beautifully, because 2 all the people saying 'i handle it better when my horses plays up' youre not on that horse u don't know what it felt like and also what extent Rose held him back and two its the Olympics of coerce hes not going 2 handle it 2 the best he can in such a high comp can u imagine the adrenaline running through his body and his horses
either he lost his stirrup or he dropped his stirrups and it looked like his ear was broken or something or the horse was just going to beat up his ear or something lol
oh my goodness please tell me you are joking?!?!?!?! have you ridden at the olympics have you? or were you there? I'm just shocked at that fact that you could have ridden lucky better then Shane did Wow you must be an awesome rider because shane is one of the best in the world!!!!!! Good luck at London 2012, you're going aren't you???
maybe a fly or bee flew in his ear and he didnt like it so he started to act up. it couldnt have been a pompom cuz they arent alowed anything in there ears while in dressage
Um... in eventing dressage you can't have anything in their ears (nets, pompoms etc..) and their equipment gets checked closely by and official before they go in the ring, so he couldn't have had something in his ear, his horse was just not submissive... maybe sore who knows
Beezie's horse had something stuck in his ear in the SJ, too! It caused them a refusal. I was like, "OH NO, OH NO! HE HAS SOMETHING IN HIS EAR! I hope they take off the ear net before the next round. And they did! I've never seen BZ ride that horse without an earnet, but I guess there was a thread or something in there that bothered him. Shame... the US could have placed better! That would have rocked... but at least we brought medals home, anyway! :D Too bad about Shane's horse. Darn!
it was probably a cotton ball (very common to put in horse's ears). However it doesnt keep them concentrated by keeping the sound out, it actually annoys them more so they concentrate on that instead. The same thing happend to Beezie Madden and Authentic in the olympic qualifier and authentic refused a fence b/c ther was somethin in his ear. poor horses!
it wasnt a cotton ball its calld an ear pom so the horses dont get scared at loud noises and can hear themselves think but yea thats probly what it was
yea like my horse he gets spooked easeily and i dont use cotton balls all i do is take his mind off it and get him ti bend and extend his trot and canter and do a headset and that works just fine
im pretty sure you cant use those in the dressage. Only sj and xc because of the noise of the wind when the horse travels at speed. some horses freak out at it especially cause most horses get their ears clipped. But in dressage they're not allowed :(
yerr i think it was probably an insect problem and yer you cant ride dressage in bonnets or ear wigs incase you try to hide plugs or cotton down the horses ear so they wont get spooked at noise etc.
You can't have one of those eag wig/hood things on your horse in the dressage it is against the FEI rules. You can wear it in sj and xc but not dressage.
The commentators when I watched the XC (which I do not think is cruel, beckles) seemed to think that All Luck was spooked by the giant screens, however seeing that I will go with the insect-in-ear explanation. Bad luck for Shane!
Also, any Aussies wanting to see XC and SJ there are vids on yahoo7/olympics
BTW making a horse carry a fat person is more cruel than xc riding but that doesn't stop people does it. You need to learn more about the sport and maybe you'll change your opinion!
Depends on how fat the person is! I just said that anyway to make a point I hate it when people say xc is cruel when they obviously have no idea what they are talking about.
Shane gave that horse the best ride he could, i don't believe it was a rider fault. Both muck ups were during the half pass to the right I think the ear was just indicating he was in pain or irritated. think like a horse what would you have done if a bug flew in your ear? there would have been alot more head shaking if it were a bug. I think it is more of a case of over warming the horse up. It's a high stress situation and sometimes things happen.
Okay... I might had a fly or something in it'ss hear. That happened to me once. The horse got a fly on his ear did exactly what this horse did. Maybe I'm not right but...
wow there must of been something wrong with that ear...but how they had a team of 4 great trained vets checking them maybe it was the rider I just hope hes ok
That's one crappy test.

this is my instructor's son, and i know him personally, i also know what happened to lucky.
the reason for him acting up in his test, was because a dragonfly flew up his nose. it had NOTHING to do with his ear..

dealt with it a hell of a lot ebtetr than this.
