@Rito1968 lol oooo ok thanks :) by the way, your short film looks like an actual tv show.. the 5D is really powerful for its video quality. very amazed! :) ... guess we dont need those oversized director cameras from hollywood.
What lens at what stop for 1600 iso? I've been told that the best settings for 5D at night were around F/2.0 and max iso 1600 (Vincent Laforet; pdn PHOTOPLUS NYC 2010 on his video 'Reverie')
We shot this little piece as a first draft test for the (in beginning of 2009) new camera. It was far before Canon provided us with 25fps recording and all the fun stuff, that came with the new firmwares. So we had to shoot in 29.97 fps and recorded sound seperately with an extern camcorder (Canon XHA1), Microphon was a Sennheiser MKH416. In postproduction I converted all Takes with lip-sync to 25 fps (PAL) and left the other takes slow down a bit to 25fps.
Did you just use the one kino flo for back lighting characters and were there any gels or just grading? what about filters on lens i was thinking of trying quarter mist filters to cut down contrast.
@sodiumwinter The KinoFlo lit up the whole Sequenz at the Oil Drilling Station.
At the harbour dialog scene we used it for backlight only. We couldnt afford any Gels, cause we were so tight on budget, but I think it could be interesting what would come out of the use of a quarter Mist filter.
Yeah try it if you get a chance really helps video contrast. I am amazed at how you can use natural light with that cam its almost cheating! Im currently saving for it as a B cam i have XDCAM HD330 so you can just turn detail down and it has great dynamic range. lemee know how the mist filter works out?
I saw out takes it just looked like you had soft gelled L.E.D key on their faces amazing i.s.o! even looked like toplight like shots straight out of sopranos! Did you use telephoto lens or is that natural d.o.f? Where was the light sources coming from street lamps? Also did you grade or desaturate the image?
This was a totally No-Budget production. One KinoFlo and a skateboard dolly with one lenght of tracks. Everything was available light, except the backlight on the Dialog and the drilling station. It was intendet to be a testing of the camera for one day, we were three people plus the actors, one car and 5 locations. We shot from 2 pm till 1 am. In the post i did a wee bit of grading, just to give some kind of "petrol" look. but its h264, so its tough to grade it. Thx, good You like it.
I did similar v. low budget with a music video with 2 lights a genny and a ladder dolly with 2 of us Took much longer to shoot though and cost money because we had alot of complex in camera fx shots, props costumes, animatronics e.t.c. Ill let you know when i post it on you tube so you can check it out. I wish i had a Canon 5D would have saved me alot of hassle.
Definetly. Only a question of the lenses. Good enough for the big screen imho. IF You are careful with lighting. The footage is .mov, H264 compression, and therefore a bit of a lack in dynamic.
More! More! More! Thanks for this excelent footage. Please, I got to know how much is the device used for seperate sound. Usually I'm anoyed by bad sound in most peoples videos but yours was great. thanks!
Thank You, glad You like it. If it wasn't such a big hassle, I would love to do tons of this stuff. We recorded sound on my Canon XHA1 HDV Camcorder. We used a Sennheiser MKH416 microphone.
Yes, I changed the framerate is all dialog scenes from 30fps to 25...
To get some more impressive look, I left the 30 fps in all scenes without dialog. (so they are a little bit slowmo). This Camera is so cool. Only drawback is that fast panning (in German Reissschwenks) results in shifted image.
wow, this is really some great stuff. You need to go ahead and actually make a piece not this test crap. The lighting is great, especially at the beginning. Very dramatic. Nien Leben!
Camera and Post. We were filming in almost darkness (tough light situation) and camera settings were 3.600 ISO, 50th second, 55mm lens 1.3. It was part of the test to see what happens when film at these extremes.
In the footage there are some rectangular grain patterns, which got stronger by downgrading material to DV for editing. (sorry my english)
viel besser als der sonstige schrott den man im deutschen fernsehen sieht, sehr schön !

@Silentcow : Lenses were 85mm/50mm Canon at F 1.3 for the night scenes at 3200 ASA. Which for sure too noisy, but we did this only for testing.

If you did so, what program did you use.
Cause the movements look really nice. Thanks in advance
