SVD rifle with 7N1 sniper cartridges may not produce more than 1.04 MOA extreme vertical spread with 320 mm twist rate barrels. The extreme vertical spreads for the SVD are established by shooting 5-shot groups at 300 m range.
The accuracy requirements demanded of the SVD with sniper grade ammunition are similar to the American M24 Sniper Weapon System with M118SB cartridges (1.18 MOA extreme vertical spread)
People say the SVD is inaccurate, i guess they just need to practice.
@powmful its not that it's inaccurate, its just that the muzzle climb from an ak is that much worse when you put it on steroids. thats why I got a mosin for this caliber. (that and the price)
@Gangster88232 Legion Tigrs have been sold here in NZ factory standard with both. The gas regulator is two stage - standard gas port opening to extra large gas port opening. Both are easily swapped on on/off.
Mr. Grannman. Thank you very much, this was a great revision about the Dragunov. Simple and insightful. What is your opinion about the iron sights of this model? Do they provide a good sight pattern? Scopes are great, but iron sights are always more reliable... in my opinion. Again, thank you for the volume warning, perfect timing.
@mohawksniper79 I prefer the Dragunov. I've had better success with groups out of the Dragunov and the scope mounting system is considerably better. The design of the Dragunov is simpler and easier to strip down. The m305 M14 is more of a battle rifle design and the scope mounting system is troublesome. Apparently it was added as an afterthought to the original design which doesn't surprise me. In contrast the Dragunov is a marksman's rifle and was never issued as a main infantry weapon.
I think if my ammunition were shipped in that kind of confounded packaging, I'd go apeshit and just hack it with a hatchet. But I guess that kind of box is useful for keeping them somewhere. And...is that an?... Ironing board your shooting on?
Yet another first class review. Useful practical information and really well presented. Thanks and keep it up. NB, would be interested to know the site you bought your scope from, I am after one for my Tigr. Cheers. Joe Christchurch New Zealand
@mordechai88 The hills bounce the sound around. Once you've stood beside someone shooting .308 + you realise video camera sound recording does not accurately represent loud sounds.
@anikidwolfy Hopefully Hickok45 will get round to reviewing the dragunov and he'll shoot enough melons, soda bottles and fake zombies to satisfy you lol.
@thajinjaninja The surplus ammo was from Belmont Ammunition. If you google the company you will find their NZ website. After shooting corrosive I boil a jug of water and simple pour it down the barrel from the chamber end. The rest of the gun I wipe clean with Inox and use Boretech Eliminator for barrel solvent.
Beautiful and sturdy rifle. I'll be getting mine as soon as I have my license done. I recommend you don't use ammunition of more than 150 grains, Dragunov needs light stuff. It's supposed to shoot 7N1 and, even better, 7N14 russian ammunition. If you can't get it, 7.62x54R ammo from Norma will do the job.
@grannman, thank you for answering. Do you know if the Tigr also had its barrel re-twisted to new proportions? I am thinking about the best ammunition for the rifle once I buy it, and as the 7N14 is unfindable, I had the idea that D-47 and D-166 rounds from Lapua could be fine. Is that correct, or are they too light?
@nt8814 The Tigr still has the original SVD twist of 1:320mm so ammunition around 150gr will theoretically be best. However I've read that Russian Tigr owners find their 'match' version 203gr ammunition performs well for them. You may just have to try a variety of weights.
@pointman131 So long as I can pull of MOA now and then, which is what I did with the better quality ammunition, I'm happy. You seem to have missed the obvious point on ammunition grades.
Nice vid, very informative. Try finding some PPU amunition from Serbia, it worked well for me while I was in the armyy. And for the real kick off :-) try 7,9 mauser sniper it is realy mmmmm ;-)

@sonylegitan not fake at all, just amplified to achieve a closer level of realism. Even then it's not close enough to how it feels standing beside it on the porch.
@fmpanic000 This Barnaul 7.62x54r is $89 per 100 rounds so I dunno about a .243 being cheaper. Although with a semi auto you might feel the urge to pump out a few more rounds for fun!
@fmpanic000 Shot my .243 off of the counter in our kitchen out of door to try to pick off a coyote in the yard. Blew two electrical covers off of the plug ins.

@rcvideogamer It's just as loud as any 7.62 / .308 chambered rifle. It's just that those videos you've seen don't accurately represent the volume of a high powered rifle report. The house wall behind and the hills surrounding to definitely rebound the noise more though.
Cool. Your like Allistar Tenpenny shooting from his balcony. I learned a lot from your dragunov videos. I did'nt know what a rotating bolt was until now. Keep up the good work!!
Military surplus is some of the best ammunition I've ever fired, I think it's because its not made for the civilian market that it fires better but that's my opinion.
@TarlZaralka military surplus can range from totally rubbish, depending on the country of source, to fairly good. As a safe generalisation it is certainly not up to commercial match-grade levels as fussing over those sort of tollerances was never it's purpose and impractical for mass produced ammo. Mil surp is great for cheap shooting.
Does anybody know if they still import the tigr to the US? I do want one! I do have a saiga .308 and a PSL not the same! Very different animals! The SVD would make an awesome hunting rifle especially in 308 based cartridges! I fired an SVD before its a better weapon! I just wish a US company would license them to be made in US! I think it has potential to compete with the AR It is simpler too!
@maxposner They've stopped stamping the year on the bottom of the receiver so going off my serial number it looks to be a 2007 model. I don't know what twist they use on the shorter barreled tigrs. Best way to check is measure yourself with the cleaning rod. I used my Tigr cleaning rod with a lump of insulation tape at one end to provide a tight fit with the bore. Mark the rod on top and pull the rod through until the mark rotates back round to the top. Measure between the marks.
Fantastic review! I've learnt so much from your review. Do you know how much I love SVD, but I just can't find a good review. You are the 1st review I find having very detailed info, good graphics.... <3
@mrcannotfindaname tiger is about 1 grand but you can get a psl for 600 bucks i say psl is better but the tiger is more accurate. psl is more reliable
Thanks granman, I will try the 203 Barnaul in my Tiger. I have gotten good results with Privi 150 gr SP but am looking for different loads to use for hunting... anything. The more I shoot it, the more I like it, seems to outshoot my FAL. Have you stretched it out father than 100 metre?
@maxposner I have shot at 200m and there's a 3 round group in the video description. The Barnaul is fairly industrial stuff but is good enough to group well now and then.
@grannman If you want some good surpluss 7.62X54R ammo I would suggest Bulgarian I use it in my FPK and usualy shoot 1.5 inch groups 38mm? also brown bear (also made at the Branule munitions plant) also makes a "Match" 174 grain FMJ round that is the most acurate of any that I have used averaging just under an inch 20mm My best groupe ever was with this ammo at 0.5 inches basicaly one ragged hole
@grannman I was wondering what the firearms regulations are like over there (New Zeland right?) we americans have it pretty good compared to most 1st world nations
@wild50gunner you Americans have it the best apart from import restrictions. We need a firearms license, go through interview, have referees, secure storage, pass a multi choice test. Cannot own semi autos with mags greater than 7 rounds, flash hiders, bayo lugs, pistol grip unless firearms license is upgraded to e-cat. More red tape.
hey cool vid, u show the scope , never seen b4 , really cool , sad that in my country , wepaons are illegal... ive been seriously thinking abotut living on US , haha
@diegookra Yes the US has excellent gun laws. Here in New Zealand isn't too bad but could sure be better. You live in one of those countries where only the criminals can own guns because they are the ones who don't care that it's illegal!
@vegasbob007 it's a complete clone so they do have standard rear sights with elevation and windage adjustments. The rear sight is really the only shortfall of the Norinco as they are known for having the adjustments strip internally, so if you are into using irons you're better off swapping an aftermarket rear sight on there.
@robin6512 I've just purchased a personal Norinco m14s 2009 model this last week so sooner or later I'll be doing a video on it. I've done a lot more reading on the rifle since my guncity promo vids on the m14/m305. Have to say it sure looks the goods.
Between the two I prefer the Dragunov's design i.e. covered receiver, far better scope mount design, simpler and symmetrical action etc, but the m14 price cannot be passed up.
The ammo cases are to be opened like a tin of Spam or Klick. That piece if metal has to be wound off. Did it come with a similar kind of key? Either way a buddy in western canada has to open these ammo crates for his CZ and they are no end of trouble. Worth it for the costs though lol! Some people use the can opener cutters cause its less hasle.
@shkotay mil surp in 7.62x51 made in Nato countries is not going to have corrosive primer salts. Additionally I've read that no western manufactured 7.62x51 was corrosive, but if sourcing from non-Nato east block nations there is a possibility. There are tons of non-corrosive berdan primed 7.62 mil surp out there but all 54r mil surp is corrosive unfortunately.
@RockLee56887 Again, you guys are absolutely right; I won't assume such similiarities between the 2 guns again. I do have a PSL also, and in all honesty, it is noticeably more pleasant to shoot than my tiger. But I have only used the lighter bullets.
200 gr, wow. My understanding is that the dragunov was designed around a 147 or 148gr bullet, and that shooting heavy grainers may soon lead to broken parts.
@varanid9 A common misconception. The Izhmash website clearly lists the bullet weight for the Tigr as 13.2grams which equates to 203gr. I even sent Izhmash an email with a number of questions, one of which was to confirm bullet weight which they re-affirmed is certainly 13.2grams. The military SVD has even had its twist tightened from 1:320mm to 1:240mm to better stabilise heavy ammo. The design of the action and recoil system itself is conducive to shooting all manner of heavy ammunition.
@varanid9 Izhmash have a better idea than me and they've clearly stated it on their website under their Dragunov Tigr product. You're right, the heavy stuff does have a bit of oomph..
SO your a fan of the Soft-Point hunting ball ammo?
I personally prefer heavier lead Jacketed rounds because they offer more penetration, increasing the likelyhood of hitting a vital organ like a Lung or Heart(which will in both cases take the animal down).
Soft Points, correct me if I'm wrong, must be better for stun impact and stopping power, since the rounds mushroom and expand on impact thus multiplying the equivalent force per sqCM?
@fixdeluxe1 Basically the soft point is what's available. Limited options in 7.62x54r in NZ. A lead bullet will foul up the barrel no end on a powerful round like this. First I've heard of lead jacket. Generally it's a lead core, jacketed with a harder metal.
Where did you get that rifle and how much was it (if you don't mind me asking)? It wouldn't be classed as an MSSA would it? I have my E endorsement anyway but just curious, as I might see about getting one for myself... And where were you shooting? Up north somewhere eh?
@WhoDaresW1ns bought from guncity back when they were 2 thirds the price they sell for nowdays. It is a-cat, but you should know that already if you really do have an e-cat. This rifle does not have any e-cat features. Really the whole silly e-cat system should have been dumped long ago for a universal license.
@fatdan172501 I don't think any developed nation has gun laws that are more free than the US. NZ = more restriction, less freedom (unless you're a criminal then you don't care about regulation)
@grannman i figured. its those gun laws that kept us free and now there trying to change that. but im glad you guys have some guns unlike some country's. new zealand looks like a nice place. how are your laws on semi auto rifles and pistols.
@fatdan172501 pistols = heaps of red tape. I'd own a pistol if I could go through the hassle. The criminals get their pistols anyway. To own rifles like mine you need a standard firearms license which = red tape but very doable. You guys have real freedom, keep a good grip on it.
@kullas924 yeah it says I'm in New Zealand right at the top of the vid description. But yes, Australia and UK have some very restrictive, irrational gun controls that thankfully we don't suffer under here
@kullas924 that hungarian military surplus has probably been around since at least 1953, im pretty sure that stuff will last forever, its the same kind i buy for my mosin nagant m44 carbine
:) so Barnaul is a indastrial city close to Izhevsk ...
There are a lot of firms which produce these catridges (this catridge was made for mosin in 1895) ... but military catridges are the best ones - they would made like in GOST (State Standard), but privat firms can make on each own technikal standard but to get state standard lowest level of GOST - to kill two hares with on shot - to save as more as possible and to produse bad, but catridges :)
@dhanedhar 183 grain - 11.9 grams. This is the bullet weight. You can see by my other videos that you can silence this rifle as you can any rifle. Sound reduction is about 30% from my judgement. No suppressed dragunov vids you hear give an accurate representation of how loud the rifle really is with the silencer.
I just want to know but cant get a straight answer, how far can a 7.62x54 round from a Dragunov go before gravity has an effect on it? I know wind can turn the bullet of course quickly but I was confused about gravity. Anyone help me out? Thanks
I love when well educated people make videos. Subscribed! :)

@nt8814 Good on you.
I have to point out though the heavy ammunition no-no is a commonly perpetuated myth.
On their website, Izhmash specifically list a bullet weight for the Tigr as 13.2 gram which equates to just over 203 grain.
As a side note, the SVD had it's barrel twist tightened to 1:240mm to better stabilise heavier ammunition - armour piercing, incendiary ammo etc.

Thanks granman, I will try the 203 Barnaul in my Tiger. I have gotten good results with Privi 150 gr SP but am looking for different loads to use for hunting... anything. The more I shoot it, the more I like it, seems to outshoot my FAL. Have you stretched it out father than 100 metre?
maxposner 1 year ago
@maxposner I have shot at 200m and there's a 3 round group in the video description. The Barnaul is fairly industrial stuff but is good enough to group well now and then.
grannman 1 year ago
@grannman If you want some good surpluss 7.62X54R ammo I would suggest Bulgarian I use it in my FPK and usualy shoot 1.5 inch groups 38mm? also brown bear (also made at the Branule munitions plant) also makes a "Match" 174 grain FMJ round that is the most acurate of any that I have used averaging just under an inch 20mm My best groupe ever was with this ammo at 0.5 inches basicaly one ragged hole
wild50gunner 1 year ago
@wild50gunner If I could get it I'd shoot it. Ammo selection is very limited unfortunately.
grannman 1 year ago
@grannman I was wondering what the firearms regulations are like over there (New Zeland right?) we americans have it pretty good compared to most 1st world nations
wild50gunner 1 year ago
@wild50gunner you Americans have it the best apart from import restrictions. We need a firearms license, go through interview, have referees, secure storage, pass a multi choice test. Cannot own semi autos with mags greater than 7 rounds, flash hiders, bayo lugs, pistol grip unless firearms license is upgraded to e-cat. More red tape.

Can you buy silencers in New Zealand.

@vegasbob007 yes.

hey cool vid, u show the scope , never seen b4 , really cool , sad that in my country , wepaons are illegal... ive been seriously thinking abotut living on US , haha
diegookra 1 year ago
@diegookra Yes the US has excellent gun laws. Here in New Zealand isn't too bad but could sure be better. You live in one of those countries where only the criminals can own guns because they are the ones who don't care that it's illegal!
grannman 1 year ago
hey where can I buy tigr with 1:320mm twist?
Rickrollplz 1 year ago
@Rickrollplz from your local gun store if your gun laws permit their import from Izhmash.

About those M-14 rifles do they have elevation and windage adjustments on the rear sight like the American M-14 rifles or does the rear sight fixed.
vegasbob007 1 year ago
@vegasbob007 it's a complete clone so they do have standard rear sights with elevation and windage adjustments. The rear sight is really the only shortfall of the Norinco as they are known for having the adjustments strip internally, so if you are into using irons you're better off swapping an aftermarket rear sight on there.

may i ask how much you payed for the hungarian ammo :)?
and a really great vid just loved the m14 one :) since that was that rifle i learned to shoot whit :) hehe sorry for my bad english :)
jamesdrizzt 1 year ago
@jamesdrizzt Hi, the hungarian stuff was .50c NZD per round.
The Norinco M14 rifles are selling super cheap over here right now $499 NZD. For that price it is unbeatable.
grannman 1 year ago
Nice rifle mate but I like yr Norinco M14 better.Nice wanna have tho.....
robin6512 1 year ago
@robin6512 I've just purchased a personal Norinco m14s 2009 model this last week so sooner or later I'll be doing a video on it. I've done a lot more reading on the rifle since my guncity promo vids on the m14/m305. Have to say it sure looks the goods.
Between the two I prefer the Dragunov's design i.e. covered receiver, far better scope mount design, simpler and symmetrical action etc, but the m14 price cannot be passed up.
grannman 1 year ago
The ammo cases are to be opened like a tin of Spam or Klick. That piece if metal has to be wound off. Did it come with a similar kind of key? Either way a buddy in western canada has to open these ammo crates for his CZ and they are no end of trouble. Worth it for the costs though lol! Some people use the can opener cutters cause its less hasle.
shkotay 1 year ago
@shkotay Yeah I was expecting one of those tools in the wooden box the tins came in, but there was none. Made it interesting.
grannman 1 year ago
@grannman I was also thinking about getting military surplus as well since domestic ammo is rather expensive. But those corrosive primers....ugh
shkotay 1 year ago
@shkotay mil surp in 7.62x51 made in Nato countries is not going to have corrosive primer salts. Additionally I've read that no western manufactured 7.62x51 was corrosive, but if sourcing from non-Nato east block nations there is a possibility. There are tons of non-corrosive berdan primed 7.62 mil surp out there but all 54r mil surp is corrosive unfortunately.
Nato Mil surp should perform just fine generally.
grannman 1 year ago
@RockLee56887 Again, you guys are absolutely right; I won't assume such similiarities between the 2 guns again. I do have a PSL also, and in all honesty, it is noticeably more pleasant to shoot than my tiger. But I have only used the lighter bullets.
varanid9 1 year ago
200 gr, wow. My understanding is that the dragunov was designed around a 147 or 148gr bullet, and that shooting heavy grainers may soon lead to broken parts.
varanid9 1 year ago
@varanid9 A common misconception. The Izhmash website clearly lists the bullet weight for the Tigr as 13.2grams which equates to 203gr. I even sent Izhmash an email with a number of questions, one of which was to confirm bullet weight which they re-affirmed is certainly 13.2grams. The military SVD has even had its twist tightened from 1:320mm to 1:240mm to better stabilise heavy ammo. The design of the action and recoil system itself is conducive to shooting all manner of heavy ammunition.
grannman 1 year ago
@grannman Seeing as how you apparently shoot them regularly, I guess you should know. Of course, my shoulder wouldn't like the heavy loads much:)
varanid9 1 year ago
@varanid9 Izhmash have a better idea than me and they've clearly stated it on their website under their Dragunov Tigr product. You're right, the heavy stuff does have a bit of oomph..
grannman 1 year ago
@grannman Man that is some mean recoil and the report is odd to say the least. Sounds like a gunshot followed by forecrakers.
shkotay 1 year ago
@shkotay The hills surrounding the area have a bit to do with it. Makes somewhat of an echo.

SO your a fan of the Soft-Point hunting ball ammo?
I personally prefer heavier lead Jacketed rounds because they offer more penetration, increasing the likelyhood of hitting a vital organ like a Lung or Heart(which will in both cases take the animal down).
Soft Points, correct me if I'm wrong, must be better for stun impact and stopping power, since the rounds mushroom and expand on impact thus multiplying the equivalent force per sqCM?
fixdeluxe1 1 year ago
@fixdeluxe1 Basically the soft point is what's available. Limited options in 7.62x54r in NZ. A lead bullet will foul up the barrel no end on a powerful round like this. First I've heard of lead jacket. Generally it's a lead core, jacketed with a harder metal.
grannman 1 year ago
@grannman Lead corrodes other metals much faster than a smooth, lighter conductor like copper.
Oh,sorry my mistake.Lead Core with steel jacket.

i have to say, this review is impressive, carried informative details. nicely done. you're thecooldude. 5 stars.
MrXerga 1 year ago
Where did you get that rifle and how much was it (if you don't mind me asking)? It wouldn't be classed as an MSSA would it? I have my E endorsement anyway but just curious, as I might see about getting one for myself... And where were you shooting? Up north somewhere eh?
WhoDaresW1ns 1 year ago
@WhoDaresW1ns bought from guncity back when they were 2 thirds the price they sell for nowdays. It is a-cat, but you should know that already if you really do have an e-cat. This rifle does not have any e-cat features. Really the whole silly e-cat system should have been dumped long ago for a universal license.
grannman 1 year ago
@grannman
Yeah, sorry mate, I didn't hear the bit about the five round magazine, thought it was the standard 10.
WhoDaresW1ns 1 year ago
@grannman Must agree with you on that Universal License point.

wow new zealand looks nice how good are your gun laws better than the u.s. or worse. its pretty there might consider a move lol.
fatdan172501 1 year ago
@fatdan172501 I don't think any developed nation has gun laws that are more free than the US. NZ = more restriction, less freedom (unless you're a criminal then you don't care about regulation)
grannman 1 year ago
@grannman i figured. its those gun laws that kept us free and now there trying to change that. but im glad you guys have some guns unlike some country's. new zealand looks like a nice place. how are your laws on semi auto rifles and pistols.
fatdan172501 1 year ago
@fatdan172501 pistols = heaps of red tape. I'd own a pistol if I could go through the hassle. The criminals get their pistols anyway. To own rifles like mine you need a standard firearms license which = red tape but very doable. You guys have real freedom, keep a good grip on it.

kullas924 1 year ago
@kullas924 yeah it says I'm in New Zealand right at the top of the vid description. But yes, Australia and UK have some very restrictive, irrational gun controls that thankfully we don't suffer under here
grannman 1 year ago
how long is the ammo like 7.62 good for
kullas924 1 year ago
@kullas924 that hungarian military surplus has probably been around since at least 1953, im pretty sure that stuff will last forever, its the same kind i buy for my mosin nagant m44 carbine
aZOMBIEpanda 1 year ago
:) so Barnaul is a indastrial city close to Izhevsk ...
There are a lot of firms which produce these catridges (this catridge was made for mosin in 1895) ... but military catridges are the best ones - they would made like in GOST (State Standard), but privat firms can make on each own technikal standard but to get state standard lowest level of GOST - to kill two hares with on shot - to save as more as possible and to produse bad, but catridges :)

Where have you got these "Tsinks" - we have had them in the soviet army :)!
"Tsink" in Russian is Zn-metall - that is why the soldiers have called these boxes tsinks !

@arcaballista So they are good not just for holding ammunition but also for brewing up some zinc flavoured tea? Mmmm, tasty!

the hungarian ammo had 183 grain .does that means 183 grains of black powder ?
can we attach silencer or a suppressor to this sniper.because it makes a roaring sound
dhanedhar 1 year ago
@dhanedhar 183 grain - 11.9 grams. This is the bullet weight. You can see by my other videos that you can silence this rifle as you can any rifle. Sound reduction is about 30% from my judgement. No suppressed dragunov vids you hear give an accurate representation of how loud the rifle really is with the silencer.
grannman 1 year ago
@grannman so grain is a unit of weight.i will be delighted to see our other

I just want to know but cant get a straight answer, how far can a 7.62x54 round from a Dragunov go before gravity has an effect on it? I know wind can turn the bullet of course quickly but I was confused about gravity. Anyone help me out? Thanks
