  • Love Allen Sherman but I have a question about the video. At the point in the song where it says "my ma leans out the window and she hollers, here we are" I always thought the joke, was that his mother was in the car with him. Let me know what you think.

  • @johnplumley - How did his ma’ get in the car?

I always took it as he is a traveling salesman, out on the road. And when the season ends, he comes home. And Ma’ is there to greet him, with all the family, waiting in anticipation of, and to celebrate his return.

And the humor is that Ma’ is so eager to see him, she leans out the window (of the home the he grew up in, and spent his whole life in), to say… Here we are!

  • @cputb1- I grew up listening to Allen Sherman and always thought the same thing you did but now I have a different perspective on that part of the song. I think hes saying that his mother was so overprotective of him that she traveled on the road with him the whole time. So when the car pulls up to the home, she leans out the window of the car and hollers to his wife and kids or whoever, "here we are" I don't know, just a thought, but thanks for posting the song!

  • Great song and a fun video but the rooster crow doesn't belong.

  • whos family did you use???

  • @gingernatorful - That was Chart Nestlefarb and family.

  • fuck you for putting that rooster crow audio in!

  • @sammislawa - Thanks for the comment! It's always nice to have a true intellectual so elegantly chime in with an astute an observation.

  • @cputb1 What can I say. That's what youtube commenting is all about.

  • @sammislawa - No sammi, that's not what Youtube commenting is all about. That's what immaturity is all about, hahaha.

  • @cputb1 Exactly. Youtube comments are a wonderful place to let out one's inner 13-year-old.

  • Thank you for posting. I had this album as a kid, and didn't realize Sherman was parodying existing songs -- I heard these before I ever heard the originals. He has given me hours and hours of pleasure. I still sing some of them in my head....

  • This song is from the album "Allan Sherman's Mother Presents: My Son The Folk Singer." You can get the CD version from Amazon.com.

  • Wonderful video.

  • @dookdookdook1 - Thanks for the kind comment!

  • Thanks. It must be 30 years since I heard this!

  • GREAT JOB!!! I had this album as a kid and have missed Allen Sherman for years.. Thank you!

  • @ethermeoru - Thanks for dropping by!

  • This is based on ‪Bing Crosby's Dear Old Donegal‬ - find it on YouTube!

  • This is just great fun. One of the best of this sort that I have seen. Just a lot of fun.

  • @Bodie007 - That's what I was going for. A bit of fun! Thanks for dropping by, and the comment!

  • @Bodie007 can someone please put allen sherman 12 days of christmas thanks

  • At 1:36 he says "Moskowitz, Lupowitz..." There used to be a Romanian restaurant in Manhattan called "Moskowitz and Lupowitz". In joke?

  • @SesameSquirrel

Probably, Allan Did that kind of thing all the time.

  • Outstanding job, and a fitting tribute!

  • @wildjohn - Thank you!

  • this is Irish drinking song tune from whose line is it anyways

  • @RadicalNotion it's also in the episode of Family Guy where Peter goes to Ireland to see his real father.

But Sherman came before either-- and the drinking song, though I don't know the actual name, came before all of them

  • Nice job. Very nice.

  • @doktortelevision - Thanks for the comment!

  • Thanks cputb1 for Posting This!

  • @BobSlydell100 - Thanks for watching!

  • All I wanted was the song! But the video with it (already knowing the song) was fun ready to happen! Thanks for refreshing some great material~

  • @cosmickate3 - Thanks for the kind comment!

  • Have always liked this Sherman tune since it first was released...but really, terrific job on the vid!

  • @bluecrab2u - WoW thanks! Very kind of you! Thanks for dropping by.

  • This rocks!

  • @bradlibunlimited - thanks for having look!

  • This is a great video, thank you! Love Allan Sherman, brings back great childhood memories :-)

  • Thank you Insomniac Girl!

  • Allan Sherman related to Sid Haig......somehow, I just can't put that together!

  • I have to agree, this was funny and entertaining. Thank you so much for making it. You've really done him justice. I've loved this guy since I was a little girl and talent like his is rare and far between. For a man who wasn't even Jewish, he was incredible. I believe he was Italian.

  • With all due respect I do believe he was Jewish. Please cite your source.

  • Sherman took his mother's maiden name after being abandoned in childhood by his Italian father, Percy Copelon, a stock car racer, mechanic, and inventor. Much later, Copelon offered to pay for Sherman's education if he would re-take the family name, but when no support was forthcoming, the young man became Allan Sherman once again.

  • I see you cut and paste very nicely from Wikipedia. You did not give them credit as the source!

According to Halakha, if a child is born of a Jewish mother, he/she is a Jew, not half, but 100%. I do believe his mother was Jewish. I am Jewish, was raised Jewish, and I live in Israel. I know Jewish religious law. So forget about his father being Italian non-Jewish. Just as a point of information, there are 28,000 Jews who live in Italy, and they are Jewish besides being Italian.

  • sorry I forgot to add that. My younger brother is a half and half. My older brother and I are Russian decent on both sides as well as Jewish, where my younger brother was half and half, Russian/' Sicilian. He could have chosen either religion if he wanted, but he decided not to chose either at this time. So they have more of a choice, where as we were born to accept only one and nothing more.

  • SweetJoy, do you not read English???Ask any rabbi. A child born of a JEWISH MOTHER is 100% Jewish... There is no such thing as HALF!!!

    Would you STOP spreading mis-information??

  • Been jewish all my life, you don't have to tell me about anything. Let's just end this with one note. What does it matter who is who, when we're all human to begin with. Love the neighbor you hate, help the man/woman next to you and always give a good word to those who never had one.

  • Sweets, just because you have been Jewish all your life doesn't mean you know anything about Jewish law. I repeat, anyone who is born of a Jewish mother is Jewish. This is the case of Alan Sherman. So as I said, STOP spreading information!

  • to be honest, who cares. The man has been dead for decades. I'm sure he's not worried what his religion is now. So what if he is Jewish, I'm sure his mother appreciates all that you're saying, but she's dead too. Stop looking for the last word. It's over. Get off the subject. Oy

  • I care because in the beginning you said he wasn't Jewish. You spread misinformation. I think a lot of people would be disappointed if people like you spread lies that he was not Jewish, and he most certainly was. Stop ordering me around and if I am looking for the last word I will because you are too small of a person to admit that you are wrong. How I despise people like you.

  • so happy to hear that. Thank you. You've been a true human being. It's people like you that make it bad for jewish people. You take everything to the extreme and make it more than it all was. NOw I know how wars are started. YOu have proven a fact that people like you will always shoot first. So so sad. So very sad. But thank you again. I will never have to worry about meeting anyone like yourself. Thank goodness I live far far away from you.

  • He was half Jewish half Italian.

  • @revcom301 , you can't be "half Jewish". Either his mother was Jewish or he converted - in which case he was Jewish, or his father was Jewish & so he wasn't.

  • I grew up listening to this guy. Not being Jewish I, misunderstood a lot. But laughter transcends all boundaries. Or some sh&t like that. Funny vid.

  • Thanks for the comment ponkkaa!

  • Great Video! thank you

  • Thanks for checking it out bjc12566!

  • This reminds me of the 'Irish Drinking Song' from "Whose line is it anyway?" :)

  • I wonder if his mom outlived him. He was only 48 when he passed away.

  • Allan Sherman....wow...does this bring back memories! Any chance you remember his parody of ''Casey Jones"....lines like..."J.C. Cohen...what a fine conductor..."?

  • Allan Sherman was the original Weird Al Yankovic.

  • You're right on that one. He was possibly the one who turned me onto parody music.

  • Sherman was a great comic/singer. You did him justice. Laughed my ass off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Funny video. Thanks for posting, and for using Allan Sherman's very funny song in your educational vidoe.

  • LOVE A.S. what a talent

  • Allan was a comic genius. I have a copy of "My Son the Folk Singer" on vinyl, but I don't have a working turntable anymore. Thanks for posting this, I haven't heard it in years. If you can, do one for "My Zelda".

  • Thanks for stopping frkaz911. I've been thinking about doing another A.S. song. My Zelda would be a good one.

  • I am laughing so hard i am in tears. I can picture the scene now. Me at 7 years old in my parents livingroom while my dad puts on a Reel To Reel Tape of no less than 2 hours worth of Allan Sheman. I could sit there for hours (and often did) laughing then as I am laughing now. Thanks you for keeping humor like this alive in the digital age.......

  • Thanks for that great comment catfan927!

  • Wunerful, wunerful, wunerfu! I looked and looked, and can't find "Westchester Hadassah", Allan's parody of "Winchester Cathedral" by the New Vaudeville Band. My dad used to play the NVB when I was in grade school. It's funny I'm thinking about Allan's parody today, 'cause I'm actually thinking of joining Hadassah! Got to do some more mitzvot and maybe make some gal pals!

  • Hi shulamit1991,

Tried to PM a link to an Mp3 of Westchester Hadassah to you, but was blocked.

PM me, if you want it.

    Thanks for the comment.

  • Rated 5 stars and favored.

  • Good names indeed.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • man, this sounds EXACTLY like every family reunion i've ever been to! :)

    great song

  • Hahaha. I hear ya'.

  • Really enjoyed that. Listening to Allan Sherman records was a big, big part of my childhood.

  • Mine too. Thanks for the comment.

  • This whole vid is great. I have to say, the fireworks at the end were both a surprise & a highlight of this old classic! Can't wait to see if you ever have time to do one for "Go to Sleep, Paul Revere!" (Thanks for sharing.)

  • Wow, thanks for the kind comment.

Hmm, I have been in a creative slump lately. Maybe I should re-visit that PR track and see if it could be worked into something. Thanks again!

  • Allen Sherman was brilliant!

  • Yes he was!

  • Wish there were more brilliant comedy minds like Alan...

  • Agreed.

  • Sadly, I think that greatness in comedy such as this is behind us.

  • Just thinking, another song by A Sherman that is similar to this, and would be funny to see what kind of relative "characters" would be inserted by you.. Do you know "Sarah Jackman, Sarah Jackman, How's by you?"

  • Very good. A Sherman is still one of my all time heroes! We need more of this.

  • Thanks for the comment 54rein!

(I've got 2 other A.S. tributes posted if you want to have a look)

    Thanks again.

  • this is making my ears grin!... haven't heard this in ages, I grew up listening to this...

  • hahaha

Yep, it's an oldie but a goldie.

    Thanks for the comment louswire!

  • EXCELLENT. Graphics match up (pretty much) with my childhood imagination of the song. Except for the Cohen that you put in. No Cohen looks like that!

  • Thank you crunchyfrog0001.

( I blame Google for my poor Cohen search, hahaha)

  • your welcome

  • lol not

  • Thanks

  • Boy this brings back a lot of memories. Allan Sherman was the best.

  • Yes he was. Thanks for the comment.

  • Yet another well done video. Thanks for sharing all of these.

    Peace.

  • Thanks a lot for watching and commenting on the Alan Sherman bits.

  • You're welcome. Our usual stalking method is to watch many more of your videos and comment on those also. :)

  • By all means, stalk away! hahaha.

I also plan on doing some skulking around in your channel's portfolio when I get a chance.

    Take care

    -CP-

  • Happy memories of childhood, listening to Alan!

  • I love his light-heartedness style of singing. Very happy music.

  • Nice video, great song! I put this on my facebook page because there aren't many Chanukah songs!

  • Hey thanks a lot beautyjudge.

  • no problem; it was put together very creatively and should have 1,000,000+ views----wish I knew how to get it on the "featured" page

  • Wow! You just made my day beautyjudge!!!

Thank you. Very kind of you.

  • I'm impressed. You put a lot into this video! Great video!

  • I may have too much time on my hands, hahaha.

  • Made my day!

  • Thanks askzombiebob!

It's always nice to hear from the un-dead.

  • it is hilarioius how you find the perfect image to illustrate his words.

  • I think it's just a case of having too much time on my hands, hahaha.

    Thanks for the comment AntaresInScorpius.

  • *chuckles*

    Allan Sherman is awesome.

  • Yes he is.

Hey, thanks for dropping by DwarfWife!

  • I just love your videos. You have "it" when it comes to combining the right video/stills with the perfect music or comedy soundtrack or audio.

    Taters

  • Thanks Taters. Awfully kind comment, and it means a lot to me. You made my day!

These still shot productions aren't real video productions, like I see you and others skillfully accomplish. But I do try to squeeze as much as I can out of 'em, hahaha.

    Thanks again!

  • Uuups I can't stop watching ...

  • Hahaha. Thanks man, I appreciate you checking 'em out.

  • These are great, you do such a nice job with them.

  • Thanks!

  • OKAY, here's the deal. If you die before me, you must bequeath all of your video/still library to yours truly. Don't worry, I will make it available to any of your family members as they desire. But I want control of the archives.

I am serious. Don't let it get lost in the shuffle in 2040 when they are liquidating your estate.

  • Consider yourself bequeathed.

I'll get out a Sharpie® and write your name on the auxiliary hard drive right now.

  • Hey CP,

AS usual I love what you do at the editors desk, but more than that, I am a little jealous. When you create your videos you pull whatever images you need from the internet or other places, but very regularly you use video/stills from your own history, and it is those images that set your projects apart.

That shot of the two-tone red&white BelAir (I think) tooling down the road with the mountains in the backbround is such priceless footage.

Wish my dad had had such resources/foresight.

  • Loved it!!!!!

  • Hahaha, Thanks man!

  • Never apologize for letting me know of your latest Sherman arrangement. You are (almost) as brilliant as good old Alan.

This is wittier than most of the crap you see on Tv.

  • Thanks. I really appreciate that!

  • Nice job CP. I like your style!

  • I've got a style? Alright!!!

    Or is that code for...

"You've got too much time on your hands?"

    Hahaha, thanks applecineman!

  • LOL CP. Maybe a little bit of both (and I envy you for that) but keep 'em comin'!

  • Yea,

I had a feeling there was a catch, hahaha!

  • No catch my friend. Just kidding. :)

  • that is a strange motel!!:D thx for the reference! great job man! that looks like alot of work!

  • Strangest one I could think of, hahaha.

    Thanks for dropping by Regplex!

  • Wow CP! That was the boss! You have an amazing nac for finding my childhood memories!!

I'm smelling a collab very soon!

  • Thanks man. Hey hallbe, now this vid is playing in High Quality. How did that happen?

I've never had one play in HQ before. And I uploaded it the same way as I usually do. Do you know how one can get HQ playback on every upload? Boy, it really makes a difference.

And my vids can use all the help they can get, hahaha!
