Love Allen Sherman but I have a question about the video. At the point in the song where it says "my ma leans out the window and she hollers, here we are" I always thought the joke, was that his mother was in the car with him. Let me know what you think.
I always took it as he is a traveling salesman, out on the road. And when the season ends, he comes home. And Ma’ is there to greet him, with all the family, waiting in anticipation of, and to celebrate his return.
And the humor is that Ma’ is so eager to see him, she leans out the window (of the home the he grew up in, and spent his whole life in), to say… Here we are!
@cputb1- I grew up listening to Allen Sherman and always thought the same thing you did but now I have a different perspective on that part of the song. I think hes saying that his mother was so overprotective of him that she traveled on the road with him the whole time. So when the car pulls up to the home, she leans out the window of the car and hollers to his wife and kids or whoever, "here we are" I don't know, just a thought, but thanks for posting the song!
Thank you for posting. I had this album as a kid, and didn't realize Sherman was parodying existing songs -- I heard these before I ever heard the originals. He has given me hours and hours of pleasure. I still sing some of them in my head....
I have to agree, this was funny and entertaining. Thank you so much for making it. You've really done him justice. I've loved this guy since I was a little girl and talent like his is rare and far between. For a man who wasn't even Jewish, he was incredible. I believe he was Italian.
Sherman took his mother's maiden name after being abandoned in childhood by his Italian father, Percy Copelon, a stock car racer, mechanic, and inventor. Much later, Copelon offered to pay for Sherman's education if he would re-take the family name, but when no support was forthcoming, the young man became Allan Sherman once again.
I see you cut and paste very nicely from Wikipedia. You did not give them credit as the source!
According to Halakha, if a child is born of a Jewish mother, he/she is a Jew, not half, but 100%. I do believe his mother was Jewish. I am Jewish, was raised Jewish, and I live in Israel. I know Jewish religious law. So forget about his father being Italian non-Jewish. Just as a point of information, there are 28,000 Jews who live in Italy, and they are Jewish besides being Italian.
sorry I forgot to add that. My younger brother is a half and half. My older brother and I are Russian decent on both sides as well as Jewish, where my younger brother was half and half, Russian/' Sicilian. He could have chosen either religion if he wanted, but he decided not to chose either at this time. So they have more of a choice, where as we were born to accept only one and nothing more.
Been jewish all my life, you don't have to tell me about anything. Let's just end this with one note. What does it matter who is who, when we're all human to begin with. Love the neighbor you hate, help the man/woman next to you and always give a good word to those who never had one.
Sweets, just because you have been Jewish all your life doesn't mean you know anything about Jewish law. I repeat, anyone who is born of a Jewish mother is Jewish. This is the case of Alan Sherman. So as I said, STOP spreading information!
to be honest, who cares. The man has been dead for decades. I'm sure he's not worried what his religion is now. So what if he is Jewish, I'm sure his mother appreciates all that you're saying, but she's dead too. Stop looking for the last word. It's over. Get off the subject. Oy
I care because in the beginning you said he wasn't Jewish. You spread misinformation. I think a lot of people would be disappointed if people like you spread lies that he was not Jewish, and he most certainly was. Stop ordering me around and if I am looking for the last word I will because you are too small of a person to admit that you are wrong. How I despise people like you.
so happy to hear that. Thank you. You've been a true human being. It's people like you that make it bad for jewish people. You take everything to the extreme and make it more than it all was. NOw I know how wars are started. YOu have proven a fact that people like you will always shoot first. So so sad. So very sad. But thank you again. I will never have to worry about meeting anyone like yourself. Thank goodness I live far far away from you.
@revcom301 , you can't be "half Jewish". Either his mother was Jewish or he converted - in which case he was Jewish, or his father was Jewish & so he wasn't.
Allan Sherman....wow...does this bring back memories! Any chance you remember his parody of ''Casey Jones"....lines like..."J.C. Cohen...what a fine conductor..."?
Allan was a comic genius. I have a copy of "My Son the Folk Singer" on vinyl, but I don't have a working turntable anymore. Thanks for posting this, I haven't heard it in years. If you can, do one for "My Zelda".
I am laughing so hard i am in tears. I can picture the scene now. Me at 7 years old in my parents livingroom while my dad puts on a Reel To Reel Tape of no less than 2 hours worth of Allan Sheman. I could sit there for hours (and often did) laughing then as I am laughing now. Thanks you for keeping humor like this alive in the digital age.......
Wunerful, wunerful, wunerfu! I looked and looked, and can't find "Westchester Hadassah", Allan's parody of "Winchester Cathedral" by the New Vaudeville Band. My dad used to play the NVB when I was in grade school. It's funny I'm thinking about Allan's parody today, 'cause I'm actually thinking of joining Hadassah! Got to do some more mitzvot and maybe make some gal pals!
