Flight Safety was an attempt to understand a woman I saw once at the airport. She was maybe 35, with a stopwatch, a clipboard, and binoculars, and also a child, whom she ignored. She concentrated instead on studying aircraft movements, timing arriving and departing aircraft, and noting each result on lined paper clipped to her board. She fascinated me. I found myself inventing explanations, convinced she had been there before, doing precisely the same thing, maybe every week.
