I died so many times on Shadows part of the level because his controls are so bad. I've fell of the edge while using the homing attack, I uses a spring and got sprung into a time rift and the eagle of freedom left without me once and I had to kill myself to do the level again.

Going back to what Solaris said I think it actually makes sense about the whole time zone thing. Sonic living in the present, living in the moment not worrying about what could happen or already happened. Shadow suffering from his past and having such a complex back story and trying to let go of his past. And Silver coming from the future of course!
