good blend but way to lowed!!! it need to be very very soft!!! and there a few part that sound like a kid singing. more of the girls. yes at 2:36 to 2:39 edcassells is right. so need some work but and ok job. but really need to work on doing what it say "PP" work on that.
Dr. Kornelis - why do you have the second sopranos singing a 'D' at measure 49 instead of the 'Eb' as written? (2:36 to 2:39) The third and fourth sounding simultaneously is one of Whitacre's 'signature sounds' and it is written all over this piece at various times except here you changed it. There must be a valid reason and I'd like to know it.
i agree, a littttle bit fast, but then again, i like to dwell in music so, yeah. otherwise, absolutely amazing. i think i'd cry during performances if i was in that choir
for the most part, your vowels were together, your soft-pallets...no. up like a balloon is in your throat. i hope this was a sight reading... this is for your director. emote the music. musicians don't play music, they make it. let your students move with it. let the tempo ebb and flow with the text. more phrasing. less vibrato. don't push the sound sop's in upper register! let the sound flow on the end. and for the love of god. decrescendo more!
I agree. Great sound, you guys blend very well, and that may be because you have quite a few members in your ensemble, maybe not. The only thing that could make this better is a different space to sing in.
This sounds like note to note to note vs. legato connection in the tone. It needs a little more strength in the breath and should sound sustained all the way through..it just sounds like the group hasn't sung the piece long enough together to trust each other. Some vowels are a little funky too..keep working..you are a great choir! Get out of your scores!
You guys have a healthy ballanced sound. And you tune the dissonances well for the most part. My one big critique-it is very easy to start singing very syllabic or "note-note...". two ways to approach music: VERTICALLY.... or harmonically-tunning chords unified vowels on the beat, etc. very important in a piece like this where each syllable is a new often dissonant chord. But if you dont also think HORIZONTALLY- linearly, melodically-then you miss the real beauty and artistry of this piece

I thought there were far too many overwashed jeans in places and the pianist was obviously fast asleep.

i totally agree with you,
it really is one of Whitacre's 'signature sounds´
and you have removed it :S

I agree with Megan; Sleep is definitely supposed to be more legato.
>> It sounds like there is one soprano 1 who's using WAY too much vibrato. It almost makes the note sound flat.

hmmmmm...
i feel like this piece is supposed to be more legato than what they are singing..
the sopranos are definitely using too much vibrato, and just going note to note..
vowels are off at points..
the word "sleep" is too wide..
the basses..on "what dreams may come", its suppose to be your time to over power..
and it wasnt there..
it could have been better..
but for the most part,it was nice..

needs vowel work and the tempo needs to be slowed down a lot.

this is amazing! it would have been better if memorized. i agree it was a bit robotic, maybe slow down a bit, but other than that fabulous job!

Expression? Dynamics? Phrasing?
Great intonation though. Sometimes too much vibrato.
Compose4life 3 years ago
Well, technically you sound great but slow it down, and put some emotion into it! Listen to the version on Whitacre's CD, seriously.
