    thanks Pal

  • can i also spray the throttle and air in the intake manifold that it sits on through the orfices?

  • @musicfan09jj Are you talking about shooting air in the two holes that the EGR sits on.

  • @richpin06a Thanks for the fast response! yes i was, i sprayed some throttle stuff in it and it looked like it got smoe stuff out. should i use a putty to scrape off the gray stuff (that looks like dried paint)? Also, my star is not pushing in and out. is that because their is too much carbon? how can i fix that? it will spin around with the star screw driver but not go in and out

    Thanks!

  • @musicfan09jj Yes scrape the surface clean.Sounds like the egr pintle is carboned up if you can not push it in.

  • @richpin06a Thanks again! is there any way i can get that carbon off? like taking that clip off, or like getting a star screw and use a hammer to force the pintel down?

  • Rich I have the sane vehicle I recently changed the egr on mine. Now the question I have for you is how would I go about cleaning the tube that leads up to the egr. I will be honest with you I dont think running the car with out it sounded too good...

  • @MrArtygreen Check your inbox i will send you a link to a solution.

  • Once AGAIN you save'me not only money but time and most importantly stress. Thank you Thank you Thank you Rich doesn't even begin to express what you and your video's mean to myself and all the others here on the youtubes =) Please keep the very helpful video's coming!!

  • @docthemac I will keep the videos coming....O if you happen to see google ADs next to my video feel free to click on them they give me a few cents for the clicks which helps me with the videos.

  • What were the symptoms of this being dirty?

  • @GraniteBees I believe it was rough running .

  • Great video---i did this replacement to the letter and also pulled the PCMB fuse to reset the check engine light also----i drove the car for a while the check engine light came on again----Do you think i should just replace the entire EGR valve and call it a day?

  • @tw102561 Sometimes cleaning works and sometimes it does not.

  • You are an amazing fella... In a good way, you remind me of my stepfather, he could fix anything!!! Your bids have been invaluable as I try to resuscitate 98 SL1... Thank you...

  • Another well scripted video Rich. Very professional I must add !! I cleaned my EGR just like you recommended. Now with my innova 3130 hooked up and on the I/M monitor status the EGR and the EVA lights are flashing. Any idea what that means ? I`m not sure what EVA stands for.

  • @MrRaiders6769 It means the monitor has not run its test.EVA stands for Evaporative Emission Control System

  • Cleaned the EGR today. It was one of the easiest maintenance jobs i've done, thanks to your clear video!

  • Thanks for uploading! I'll do that cleaning even though I don't have any MIL on. Hopefully it doesn't turn out to be the old truth "If it ain't broken, don't fix it!".

  • are you from Mass.? sounds likes it! hehe

    thanks for the video

  • @spettro9 Ya

  • @spettro9 Yes or should i say ...ya

  • we got a new valve and the code still comes up with the same thing could it be the electrical connecter how do you change that thanks or what else could it be

  • @caseymesa777 Yes it could for some reason the egr pindel location information is no getting back to the computer.

  • I did this to my 98 SL1 step by step exactly the same way and after two days the CEL is back, It was so clean that the throttle body cleaner coming out of it was still clear. I used a new gasket and even started the car like you said to blow everything out of the manifold. Could the valve be weak? Not completely bad just weak? The car runs exactly the same with the CEL on and as it does with it off. I noticed minor low end power increases right after i cleaned the EGR. No stalling or anything.

  • @SupaMan865 Cleaning the valve does not work all the time sometimes it has to be replaced.

  • @richpin06a Okay, Thank you tho! your videos are helping me learn this vehicle!

  • You're a hero! Thanks Rich. Got rid of my p0404 and p1404. Hesitation is gone.

  • @richpin06a yeah i kno. other than tht the car runz fine. thanks for all ur help.

  • @richpin06a i did this job on my saturn, and its all good to go. i was bored so i took the egr off and started cleaning it lol. lots of carb was in it so i guess it was worth it. as for the problem i told u bout b4 the light is not on now but if it does come on the only thing i can think of now is to jus replace the coil pack because the plugs are new(5months old), and the wires too.BUUUT we'll c. THANKS.

  • @omarG19100 Cross your fingers

  • Wow! I have to say thank you so much bud. This was so easy to do and helped tremendously! Saved me $100.00 :)

  • @richpin06a thanks man. but wht is the main roll of this valve? like if it goes bad what are the common syntoms?

  • @omarG19100 When it goes bad your engine can run rough and stall.

  • @richpin06a say if i take the egr off and clean it, but need a new gasket. Do u use the same gasket u use on the water pump(the glue), or u have to buy the exact gasket fit?

  • @omarG19100 I would use the correct gasket because of the exhaust heat involved.

  • Hey rich, just wondering have you ever seen a s series w / dohc have issues with hesitation on the highway , when I go to give her gas I will need to hold the pedal to the floor ,and only after 3 seconds she responds is a common problem with these cars, I checked for proper spark, fuel injectors fuel pressure, I did unplug the EGR connector ,it did not have any effect on idle, and no MIL came on, I did not try your bypas with the soda can test as of yet, I have no codes , what gives???... Thanks

  • @karlakatie1522 Do you have a scan tool to read the real time data.It almost sounds like the computer is not seeing the correct TPS reading.

  • Thanks alot I am a woman and I did this for the first time

  • @iamhere22 Sounds like you have a dirty EGR valve and cleaning it help.I never touched the gas when i ran the engine with the valve out.

  • with the help of this vid i saved like 100 and my car passed the emission test! THANKS!!!

  • Great vid. i will try this out and should i disconnect the battery to clear the code?

  • @minitruckn247 If you are working on a Saturn S-series you can remove the PCM B fuse in the underhood fuse box to clean the codes.

  • Can i clean the EGR with carburetor cleaner, instead of what you used?

  • @TheCubanMan728 Carb and Throttle Body Cleaner must be the same thing as they sell it as such

  • @richpin06a safe to clean in Gas?

  • @hitachi088 probably safe just a little dangerous

  • Hi Richpin,

love your vids - I had this code on my sis' GrandPrix -actually p0404 p1404.

Replaced the EGR(with new) and was still getting slight hesitation-though not as bad as before the EGR replacement. I read where if you dont clear the codes it can still give you these type of problems after installing new EGR (I didnt clear the codes - my buddy has the OBD still lol)

Thanks - and sorry if im asking a question you already answered... didnt see/hear it in the vid :)

  • Besides running the car for a few seconds without the EGR on to blow out the intake, is there something else you can do? I took my EGR off today because of P0401 and there's a bunch of crud in the intake that's probably going to go right back into the EGR.

  • @samuelbrainsample BTW, my car is a '99 SC1, SOHC. Nice to see a clean engine under the hood. I need to replace my valve cover gasket because there's some oil leakage.

  • @samuelbrainsample The 1.9L has 2 bolts ,the vac line and the pipe that screws to it.

  • hey rich i was wondering if you have any videos on how to remove an egr on an escort?? i have a 98 escort that needs to be replaced. thanks buddy

  • @joeyz2k I don't at this time

  • @richpin06a thanks rich! i was wondering on those vacuum controled egr valves on those escort engines is it just 2 bolts and a gasket besides from the vacuum hose that you need to remove on order to replace the egr on escorts similar to that engine?? thanks rich

  • @richpin06a Will need to do this on my sisters 99 Sw2 with 137k. Code PO404 came in, the car is hard to start. Hope fully this will do the trick. The CEL is intermittent.

  • Thanks for the great video! I have two questions. 1) There's some goop that looks like hair gel on the electrical connection component of the EGR valve, I'm guessing that's not supposed to be there? 2) I've been getting a P1404 code (stuck open) and even after cleaning the EGR Valve the pindle doesn't completely close. Do I need to just keep at it or should I go ahead and replace the EGR Valve altogether? I'm still getting the code and experiencing poor idle/acceleration performance...Thanks!

  • @bobmortock I have never seen anything on the egr electrical connectors on the saturn s-series.It sounds like you might have to replace the egr valve.

  • @richpin06a THANK YOU!! I decided to give this another shot today in the daylight, followed your exact steps to the letter and I finally got the valve to easily close all the way (found using a thin allen wrench to clean worked wonders). Just got back from a 10-15 minute test drive and idling and acceleration we're fine. One question...the service light is still on. Will that go away with time or should I have AZ or another auto parts store clear it for me? I'm driving a 97 SL2. Thanks!!!!!!!!

  • @bobmortock Great news......to turn off the service engine soon light check out my video "Clearing The Check Engine,Service Engine Soon Light "

  • Hi Rich - great video. I have a question about a P0401 code, insufficient EGR flow. I have a 1999 1.9ltr SC1. I have cleaned the EGR valve, re-installed with a new gasket, cleaned the throttle body, recent oil change, new plugs & wires and have cleared all the codes per another video of yours. My check engine light still comes back after 5 days or so? Car runs great (thanks to you) but this code is driving me nuts!!

    Any ideas?

BTW - thanks for posting all these videos Rich - your the best

    Jeff

  • @MrCanucklhead Sometimes cleaning the valve does not work you have to replace it.Also the exhaust passage in the cylinder head that goes to the valve needs to be cleaned out which is no easy task.

  • @MrCanucklhead I had a P0401 code on my EGR. You need to check the plunger to make sure it doesn't get stuck. You can do this by inserting something into the plunger then take it out quickly so that the plunger comes back with a snap, then see if reinserting your tool will also move the plunger without any force. If it's stuck then you haven't cleaned it well enough.

  • Hi Rich, Another great video. Is this something which should be done as regular maintenance along with plugs, etc if the vehicle is running rough or just when you get a trouble code?

  • @CanadianBackBacon I bet if you clean your EGR valve every 60,000 miles you might never get a code.

  • Thanks for the videos Rich. My 1999 Saturn SL1 rolled over 200,000 yesterday and is running like new. Cleaning the EGR helped to smooth things out. Thanks again.

  • Everyone,

Pep Boys has sale, any 4 CRC products for $10 until August 29, 2010. Each item has to be $5.49 or less. You can get CRC Throttle Body Cleaner, Freeze Off, Electric Parts Cleaner, Brake Cleaner, and Battery Cleaner.

  • nice video!

  • My 93 saturn has a third 10mm bolt that can only be acessed underneath. A bit of a pain to get to for the home mech. Also a different valve than the one shown in this video and I suggest using a metal pipe cleaner to get into the tiny tubes coming out of my valve. Keep up the good work Richpin!

  • Good step-by-step instructions as usual. Also, it was neat to hear an unmuffled Saturn engine.

    Thanks Richpin

  • Good video. This is a great DIY job as shops won't take the time to clean an EGR valve, they'll just replace it.

  • As always yet another GREAT video from one of the best ( And my favorite) car guy on Youtube.

  • I did this same procedure to my car. It improved my mileage at first, but over the span of a year, the idle started to get worse. Had to pay a mechanic 65 to tell me the egr valve was loose. Make sure you tighten your bolts!

  • Awesome video what abt a po440 dude

  • Good vid man!

  • Excellent vid! Could you have blown some TBI cleaner into the holes where the throttle body was removed, scrubbed around and started the engine to blow any out? I'm guessing only the valve was a problem.

PS, the water pump that I replaced on that 99 SW2, it didn't leak till after 3 months of being on, I used the Red High Temp RTV silicone.
