  • Nope, just make a NaCl solution and put the Aluminium in.

    Enjoy :-}

This is really slow, but works with bubbles of H2

  • the reaction is not that vigourous in H2O only and the reaction is very slow.

  • caustic soda is the simple way to do this at home ...if you wanted to ? yep drain cleaner ...an alkali

  • I tried to do this but nothing happened! i even heat the water and nothing again!!!

  • @IiGgOoRrish this is not water its HCL

  • @IiGgOoRrish add water 10 milligrams of mercury II chloride, and then adds a mixture of aluminum foil, salt, mercury forms an amalgam with aluminum otherwise an alumina layer protects ...

  • @IiGgOoRrish you need to treat the Al with HCl first to remove the oxide layer.

  • wouldn't even sligtly acidic pH help ?

  • 2Al + 3H2O = Al2O3 + 3H2

  • what about alumnium foil? is it usable in the same sense or do I have to sand it down?

  • Can you add the form of the elements in the reaction?

    2Al(s) + 6H2O(l) = 2Al(OH)3(?) + 3 H2(g)?

Is the Aluminium tryhydroxyde is a solid?

  • i tryed it, nothing happened!!

  • @TheKrazykool809 add water 10 milligrams of mercury II chloride, and then adds a mixture of aluminum foil, salt, mercury forms an amalgam with aluminum otherwise an alumina layer protects ...

  • Yum...... Aluminum Hydroxide

  • NaOH can speed up that reaction significantly

  • burn it :D

  • thxxx soo much!!!

  • does it release a flammable gas?

  • Hydrogen is evolved

  • @millerrichards Yes, it releases Hydrogen, which is pretty flamable if not explosive.

  • could you treat the aluminium with sodium hydroxide solution to remove the oxide layer?

  • so wait how did you set up this experiment?

and what are you left with ? aluminum oxide?

  • If you put aluminum powder and water together will they explode??? :S

  • 2Al + 6H2O = 2Al(OH)3 + 3H2

  • what would the chemical equation for this reaction be? what gas is being produced?

  • you are right, but i treated the aluminium with HgCl2 before i put it into the water

  • no reaction with cold water.steam paased over finely devided, heated metal gives the oxide.

  • @acety1, u didn't)
