The difference was that the original Karate Kid was set in America, where Macchio was being tormented by a white gang. Now, it's black kid who goes to China and gets his ass kicked. The reason the original was so good was because there was a little old Japanese handy-man type hermit, who turned out kicked ass at karate. It was so good, because he was a little old Japanese man, living in AMERICA. The fact that this is set in China throws off the foundation that the original was set on.
