The Gray Man is the only enemy in the game. He slowly creeps toward you, and if he touches you, it clears your dream journal or something, which it did to him. Basically, he's starting over or something. Look him up for better details.

The reasons why this game is terrifying:

1) The low graphics cause the game to look scarier because of how bizarre everything looks.

2a) Because the game occasionally causes things to pop out, the player has this constant fear that the game will do it again. In essence the player is scaring themselves 70% of the time.

2b) As the game gets progressively weirder the player feels more and more alienated from it, and they know that it will only get worse. Because of this they always expect the worse

Nothing makes sense in this game, there is no universal set of rules, there is no objective, there is nothing but literal randomness.
