  • One of the greatest pep band songs ever!

  • I never knew the name of this song and it just killed me, then at work monday we were listening to the oldies station and a co-worker said, oh that's "the horse", she used to play it in band in her high school...I told her for the longest I wanted to know the name of the song, and now I do.)

  • high school pep band. my favorite song..

  • when I was 16 my girlfriend Diane Walker took me to her fathers house on Humboldt and Rockland. Her 7 year old brother rocked the shit outta this record. That little boy did the horse, bucking and shit...he was bad.

  • Go AWH!

  • north junior high school, waco,tx ....every single assembly for 3 straight years they played this song and you know what , they were better ! it helps when you know only 7 songs.

  • My high school was known as the war horses and this could not have been a better song. We used it for every game. Thanks for the memories.

  • THWG!

  • @tommerriqan1956 Mine hasn't :p

  • It's actually MFSB who played on it. They hit #2 in Billboard, 6-29-68. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a great week!

  • Fight song forever west Orange stark. Orange Tx. My Alma mater. Aka Fruit City. C.o. 2003.

  • war eagle!

  • i think this was a tune of a radiostation

  • Martins Ferry High School Purple Riders! Martins Ferry, OH. This was THE song way back, and I graduated from there in '73!

  • When I was in the Downey (CA) High Marching Band during the late '70's, we played this song in the stands during the game. We absolutely ROCKED this song!

We had some pretty powerful trumpet players back then and they really wailed on this song.

Our band director finally pulled the song during my junior/senior year because he said that he couldn't find the music anymore. I think he just got tired of hearing it. We sure didn't.

    Go Vikes!

  • PHS fight song - Parkland High School in Winston-Salem, NC.

  • Love IT!!!! Also love Dexy's Midnight Runners version.

  • This takes me back to the football games in high school. I can see it so clearly; the players, the cheerleaders, the dance team at half-time! Thanks for sharing. Love it!!!!

  • Okay, here's a question for you: Why did the instrumental, apparently intended as side b, become the big hit, while the vocal version, apparently intended as the a side, seemed to go unnoticed? Where is the vocal version, anyway!? Okay, now, I get it, after reading the history: The vocal version was really called "Love Is All Right," which apparently has nothing to do with Rick Springfield's 1980 song of the same name. My God, record labels made slip-ups even back then!

  • Okay, here's a question for you: Why did the instrumental, apparently intended as side b, become the big hit, while the vocal version, apparently intended as the a side, seemed to go unnoticed? Where is the vocal version, anyway!?

  • I did this in HS in 1973 it was the one song we could do without written music.

  • I did this in HS in 1973 it was the one song we could do without written music

  • Cool, on a columbia US package has him singing this vocal....on 10 more monster hits, unlike his "Love IS Alright" flip

  • Great upload, thanks for it! My mom played this in her school band and she's standing behind me playing her part on air saxophone. Nostalgia trip!

  • Booker T. & The MG's version is good too

  • great dancing tune me and Marie loved the beat listen to the bass

  • Call me crazy, but I distinctly remember hearing a DJ on a college st. in my hometown of Toronto once playing "The Horsen-Up". It was -apparently- a deliberate collision of "Tighen Up" and "The Horse", complete with Cliff & Archie riffing on the novelty of this fact -"Hey, whaddya doin' on my record?" "ME? Whadda YOU doin' on MY record?!"- over the band. The ultimate proto-mashup? The difference being that the weaving-together is organic, arranged and played live. Did I dream this?

  • An older friend told me of it, and how she did a improv "suggestive" dance to it in the Jr-high cafeteria during lunch that got her in deep trouble. This was back in 1959, going by her birth-date. ('45)

After I found a copy for myself (Okay, really for her) and heard it once, I played it again & visualized her dancing to it... Shaking her hips frenetically to the drum-beat during the bridge. (She always liked to shake her hips while dancing) It's a shame she can't move her like that anymore.

  • One of my favorite instrumentals since I first heard it in 1972: I was intrigued to learn it was originally recorded to accompany a song sung by Cliff Nobles. It's much better without any vocals.

  • This was our high school fight song - the Friday night football crowds used to go crazy when the band would play it!

  • @agseidel1969 THIS WAS OUR FIGHT SONG ALSO FOR PEABODY MAGNUM HIGH SCHOOL.I MISS PLAYING THIS ON THE TUBA

  • love this song. Danced many times to this at the White Horse Saloon.

  • Ah. Such memories to this song. My first date with Marie Fields. in 1967 - 68. Such memories. A kiss yes, but no sticky fingers..hahaha

  • our band director wont let us play this song...idk why...

  • I played this song religiously from 1977 thru 1988 in junior high/high school/UK (KY) college pep band! Even the cheerleaders had a routine to it when we would play it. Can't find the song on lime/frost wire and would kill to have it for my mp3 player. Blast from the past! (Let's go Bucs/Tomcats/Wildcats! - swing to the left - swing to the right). If you were in band and did the swing thing, YOU ROCK!

  • Is this an American copy? I never saw this on Columbia.

  • @MrPJSoul itt's a canadian copy

  • Makes sense.. I've gotta find one. That's a very cool record you have.

  • @discusyan

I was 11 when my Dad introduced The Horse to me. I thought the label was yellow. The band is tight! Once when the AM station played The Horse I put the record on my turntable at the same and both played in perfect time! lol!

  • Warm up song for 1975 Lexington HS BBall

  • Nice sound for an old 45. *****

  • @RamonaFromPomona .....tend to agree with you, not familiar with this one but for a 1968 it sounds mint, thanks for the vinyl share!!

  • @1nine79 It was before your time !! lol

  • When I was in high school band this was the one number we were sure we didn't suck on. In retrospect by any objective standard we probably sucked doing this song too but we had a lot of fun doing so...

  • this is a great song, I always loved this sing since I was 8 and still love it very much

  • Has any high school marching band ever NOT played this at halftime?

  • @tommerrigan1956 its our fight song

  • @tommerrigan1956 Not at halftime but in the stands we have

  • @tommerrigan1956 We played it, but we didn't play it at half-time :P

  • I really think this song is about heroin ,,,,,it was called horse in the streets and this was made in the late 60's when that shit was an epidemic !!!!!

  • why the fuck does it take him so long to put the needle on the record

  • Does the B side of this single have lyrics?

  • It's widely believed that the members of MFSB played on this 1.

  • its wierd on the monster hits various lp released by colimbia house, its a Vocal version! its not love is all right either.....cool canadian pressing i know in us it was on PHIL-LA of soul label

  • This song makes me do The Monkey!

  • thumbs up if ur high school and/or college band plays this song

  • @UltimateHero13 got ya there.

  • @UltimateHero13 my 8th grade band class plays this song

  • @UltimateHero13 our band was so good in 2004-2008 we played alot of good song like this one. but 2009-2010 our new band diretor plays the same damn songs ever game. we used to play: funky music, soul man, party like a rock star, crank dat, the horse and alot of rap, jazz, and other good songs

  • @UltimateHero13 THANKS CAUSE MY OL HIGH SCHOOL PLAYED THIS FOR OUR FIGHT SONG.I MISS PLAYING THIS ON MY TUBA

  • @UltimateHero13 MY HIGH SCHOOL PLAYED THIS AS OUR FIGHT SONG WHEN WE GET TOUCH DOWNS AT PEABODY MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL. I PLAYED TUBA BEST PART EVER.

  • @UltimateHero13 Downvotes cause you played this song! Yeah!

  • @UltimateHero13 2 thumbs up

  • It's a shame oldies stations usually pass up on this record given it's instrumental.

  • Wasn't this song, according to legend, a "b" side, but a dj somewhere played the wrong side by accident, and it ("The Horse") became a hit? I seem to remember this story years ago.

  • @38ddkelly Yes, that is true. And Cliff Nobles doesn't appear on the record AT ALL.

  • remember this?

  • My marching band plays this song. I love playing it!

  • r Every pep band of all time played this song. It makes me think about basketball..

  • The NOW EXPLOSION... splosion....splosion... splosion... Far Out!

    lifelong falcon fan

  • i have this record...i love it!!!!

  • This song is from 1968, when music was music. Not the junk of today, especially rap.

  • @primogennaio Foolish comment. Many great hip-hop artists such as the Roots, Tribe called quest, and Madlib were influenced by this and they've continued it's relevancy with their own music.

  • @misc4jb You're the fool. Hip hop can't compare to the music of the 1950s, 60s, 70s. Just listen to the difference. Some observations don't require a ph.D., just common sense.

  • @primogennaio Your "common sense" seems to lack the ability to avoid making blatant generalizations about entire genres of music. There's no common sense, only ignorance, in a phrase like that. Groups like A Tribe Called Quest and Gangstarr embraced jazz and funk and helped carry the sound to a younger generation of listeners who otherwise wouldn't have given this stuff a chance. The problem is folks like you, who choose a path of believing nothing past your generation is worth listening to.

  • This song was out in the Summer of 1968 ... How do I know? My grandmother told me ! (I know... in my dreams !)

  • ehihihiihihi tukutuk tukutuk ehiehieieiheheheiiiiii

  • this a race horse at evry speed at the same time

  • Always had visions of a galloping horse when I heard this as a child!

  • TRRUST ME ON THIS ONE THE FIRST DANCING MASCOT EVEN BEFORE THE CHICKEN WAS A GUY IN FORT SMITH ARK WHO LATER RECIEVED A SCHOLARSHIP TO COLLEGE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS HIS NAME WAS SWEET P THE DANCING RAZORBACK THIS WAS HIS FAVORITE TUNE AND HE WOULD CHALLENGE OTHER MASCOTS TO OUT DANCE HIM And they never won.

  • great song of all times!

  • Love this song!

  • Believe it or not, this is a fight song for a high school I went to for a couple of years. Pretty fun song indeed :) Jacksonville, Alabama. Look up the JSU Marching Southerners for some sound from down here :) No video of the high school I don't think.

  • what ever happened to a killer horn section???? tower of power, average white band....... do miss it! check out a new austin group called mingo fishtrap. really like those guys. :)

  • FYI....Tower of Power is still going strong...and sound better than ever!!

  • @drumsyeah What are you talking about? MFSB performed on this song, not Tower of Power.

  • This is such a great song. You can't imagine how much I love this. I should dance to it!!

    Thank you for posting it!

  • Aww yeah, we play this in pep band! I love it :D

  • Te gek nummer. Was populair binnen onze gelederen. Was ook de tunue van Veronica's Drive-Inn Show. In de tijd van de Swinging Soul Machine, R'dam The Free, Pepper & Soul. Wat konden wij goed dansen zeg. En natuurlijk de mooiste meiden.

  • Oh Yea!!!! Our High School used to play this at ball games and Pep Rallies! We would jam out when the band played "The Horse!"

It's really kewl to hear it again.

    :O)

  • This song makes me want to ride on a horse through town & chase after some douchebags who just stole some lady's purse.

  • I've always loved this song. I see all the posts here about it being a staple in the high school band circuit, and I've never heard this song other than on the radio. I never knew the name until today when the DJ actually gave the title and artist. It always reminded me of a late 60s, early 70s cop/mystery/drama/action show.

  • We Play This In High School Band For Pep Band

  • yep, so did we.. Beaumont (TX) High, late 60's... we marched to it, played it in the stands, performed drills to it ...

  • Best high school band song ever..

very cool to hear it again

  • i love to hear this song, especially during my high school's foot ball games! (that means we won, and I hear it a lot)

  • Cliff Nobles and Company: " The Horse" will give you a very early peek at MFSB who played all the background music....actually Cliff Nobles wasn't even there for the session!

  • i have to play this song at a football game in 2 weeks on the 18 GO BULLDOGS

  • your band director rocks!! so i would second that, GO BULLDOGS. I always thought if i was a band director i would have my students play the nastiest danciest funk music during halftime shows.

  • this is my fav song to play the football game the horn flashes on the trombone are just wicked

  • mansfield legacy band plays this song

  • My band plays this song

  • Mine too.

  • Is The Horse an a side or a b side? What's on the other side of it?

  • the horse is an a side and the other side it's love is all right :)

  • So, then... The Horse the a side is an instrumental version of the vocal song Love is all Right? And Cliff Nobles himself sang lead on it?

  • @discusyan actually horse is the B side

  • @discusyan I think The Horse was actually the B side of Love is all right

  • "The Horse" war jahrelang die Erkennungsmelodie von Radio Veronica, als die noch mit ihrem "Piratensender" von einem Schiff vor der Küste Hollands Radio machten.... Muss Mitte der 70er gewesen sein...

  • Every band played this, or at least knew a band that did.

  • Classic! I loved playing this in band back in High School. :)

  • This song is so fun to play especially on the trombone in my band

  • trombone for life! Do you do those awesome horn flashes!?

  • "The Horse" ROCKS!

  • Everyones marching band played that in school.

  • High school football games in the early 1980's.

  • my marching band played this when i was in high school

  • haha..this is my school's fight song.(:

  • this was my middle school fight song. at least it was in the 70's, Benjamin Stoddart Middle School in a little town called Waldorf. you might know the town as the band Good Charlotte is from there as well.

  • I went to that school!!!!! :D...its more like in oxen hill tho.. than waldorf.

  • what was the school like when you went there? I seem to remember a rather large anchor (like from a big navy ship) out in front of the school. as a goofy middle school boy we would climb all over it and stand on the top. I guess we thought that was cool, looking back it was kinda goofy. oh well.....

  • They used to use this as the theme song for a show out of Atlantic City called "Summertime on the Steel Pier". Ah, memories!

  • yea when i played football in high school we went to the playoffs and they played this in the fourth quarter good song!

  • I never heard this song until when I got in high school. My band director calls this song around the 4th quarter and we loved it.

I love it!

  • Hitchin' it up to the Horse as they introduced the song on the radio in 1968. Great instrumental of the time which includes Young Holt Unlimited's Soulful Strut and Mason Williams' Classical Gas. Great instrumentals.

  • This is my dad's all time favorite song. I remember the first time I heard this song with my dad and he turned it up real loud. :)

  • I really love this song and I also have the 45.:)

  • There is two covers of this which are fab. Dexys Midnight Runners and a shit hot hip hop version by Sound Directions

  • If I remember correctly, there was a dance that went with this song, also called "The Horse"

  • The song was actually called ''Love is Alright"

  • you are correct, there was a dance called "the horse" from this song.

  • You are right, the dance was called "The Horse." The dance came before the music. I posted a very interesting story about how the instrumental came about in another "The Horse." posting.

  • oh well thats good to know in this posting
