Right off the bat as soon as he started talking I knew he'd be a good teacher. Good teachers have a bit of enthusiasm in their voice, and Clark defenetly does.
"good tumpet"..wow.. It depends on what your standards are. I know you're not about to get a pro model, but low end professional about $700+. Most common high quality trumpets are about $2200+. Then there are customs which run $5000+. Just estimates. But..most commonly people start with a beginner model, in case they end up not liking it. Also, It doesn't matter how good the trumpet is if you don't know how to play it..
@RageOfTheKage Try an old school '70-'80's used getzen severinsen model or any pre 1990 Bach Stradivarius 37. Both these can be had for under $1000 and are just as good as anything else you can order new.
Yeah, I also learned about the pinky on the ring made the mouthpiece circle embedded on my lips...took me some time to break that habit with the different hand position, wished I learned about it years sooner...
Hmm? LoL, i don't really understand what you're saying. It doesn't really matter where your pinky is. When you play tho, you shouldn't smash the trumpet into your face. Try not to move your trumpet closer to your face when you play higher notes. You should do it with embrochure and air.
In order to make the circle depression on my lips comparatively less noticeable in public, I grab the mashed potato smasher from the kitchen, and shmoosh it several minutes on each cheek and forehead.
ur not soppose 2 tel peeple how 2 play if u dont no how.
Plenty of the all time greats put their finger in the ring. Lifting the pinky can increase finger speed and accuracy, yes, but hooking the pinky can also help with left arm endurance, plus more horn control as far as if you move it on your face or not.
He is saying it is a wind instrument because there are two groups of wind instruments - woodwind and brass. So you are right it is a brass instrument and a wind instrument.
What impresses me about Clark Terry is that he isn't just a trumpet player but an entertainer.

Clark Terry gave an instructional lesson on the use of various mutes at a jazz camp in Whitewater, Wisconsin 1976, something I will never forget.

What a wonderful teacher. I'm sure if you took private lessons with him, he would get pretty angry if you didn't practice your lesson from Arban's.
RThornhill69 3 years ago 3
Yep. Even if a student mostly likes to jamm to funk RandB, Arban material is STILL core to playing ability.

everybody needs a classic background to do anything. All pro dancers went through a classic style education, even painters

ur not soppose to put ur finger in the ring unless someone isn't teaching you.
mageofpvp 3 years ago
I think it's mainly what is most comfortable. I know that putting my pinky in that ring puts a lot of pressure on my lips.
