Nice turtle.I keep mine in an outdoor pen too. They sure do get friendly when you feed them worms.I have one big male that comes out anytime he hears me & follows me around begging for worms. :-)
So do turtles have strong jaws that could potentially bite off a human finger if mistaken as a mealworm? If so, that would definitely suck. And that turtle is AWESOME!!
To @TheATHF- Yes, some species of turtles can bite off a delicate finger, in particular, large snapping turtles. Many turtles and tortoises could probably bite off some skin. I have been bitten by my box turtles, but none have actually taken off skin-just left a bite mark. I have a few turtles I would NOT hand feed-they are too greedy and anything in front of their mouths is FOOD :)
How do u keep it from burrowing out of there pen i have 2 three toed and 2 ornate box turtles that i wanna put outside but i heard they can burrow out of the yard
@MrOGJMoney You cannot see it very well, but if you look at my video of my pen you can see that all around the walls I have buried about 16 inches of metal sheeting used for making gutters. That stop any digging. I describe other ways to stop escapes from digging box turtles on my website, boxturtlesite.info.
Box turtles are not aquatic turtles, but terrestrial, so no, you don't need to feed them in water. Now turtles like the aquatic red-eared slider must be fed in water or else they cannot eat. They can starve to death if they are kept in dry tanks and have only a water bowl to sit in. They need a tank full of water with a warm haul-out area where they can bask under UVB lights and a heat lamp.
This turtle is a dainty eater and will not bite, but I have another who I would not hand feed. If you must know your turtle's habits, you can do some things that look dangerous, but really isn't :)
They will not eat themselves to death. Very often box turtles have been found under berry bushes or mulberry trees and will gore themselves on fruit. You are right about they don't know when their next meal will come and will eat a lot-but when they are full they will stop and walk away and may not eat anything for several days while they digest the food in their stomachs. They are too smart to eat so much as to kill themselves.
I think you might be overfeeding it, it seemed to be grudging through it at the end there, I think when they slow down in taking their food you should stop feeding it, cuz they are animals they will eat until death, because they don't know when the next meal is gonna come.
Yes, some species more than others. For example, ornate box turtles are more likely to bite than three-toeds, in my experience. Most box turtles will only bite if you stick your fingers near their head. The one I am feeding may accidently bite me, but she isn't thinking of doing it on purpose :)
In the USA they are never called tortoises. The US has tortoises but they are not box turtles. In Europe box turtles are often called tortoises by some people colloquially. But they are not scientifically known as tortoises. Tortoises are from the family Testudinidae and box turtles are from the family Emydidae, the very same family that many fresh water turtles belong.

No, I buy them for about $11 for 250 at a bait shop. You can also buy them from on-line insect suppliers.
