"this tune... has nothing Bright about it."... That's some funny s@*t there, if you're familiar with his famous lawsuit against Bright tunes, and his own scuzzy attorney over "My Sweet Lord". If you haven't read about it, do so- a most compelling and unbelievable story!!!
Amazing that Billy Joel was not sued for making the video "Keeping the Faith" which is a complete rip off of this wonderful George masterpiece. Look for future Wilbury's drummer Jimmy Keltner as the Judge.
real shame that george never saw the yt phenomena- videos-music songs and documentaries of himself and with others -in this streaming formats available to 4 billion people a day--he wouldve been impressed-went to soon
George's answer to the "My Sweet Lord" allegation of infringement. made me laugh to see the significance in it. This day marks the 10th year of his passing. Godspeed to his dear soul and spirit.
i think the feeling of this video and song is that attorneys are blood sucking varmit that take from all everything that they can. george just puts a smile on our faces as he descibes it.
This was another proof of Harrison's refined sense of humour. That was how a gentleman like him defended himself after being sued because My Sweet Lord sounded just like "He's So Fine", an oldie sung originally by The Chiffons. Mr harrison himself felt surprised and concluded that it was an unconscious plagiarism. Ah...Find Ron Wood dressed as a woman!
Regariding George's humour I think that was apparent when he made a guest appearance in the Rutles. As regarding My Sweet Lord one has to admit it was uncanny to He's so fine but easily done in any ones book. What about La, La ,La nicking Death of a Clown.
great pre-mtv video and song.good song to use as a trivia information:what does the song'my sweet lord' and 'he's so fine' have in common? both songs inspired the song 'this song' from george harrison after he lost his squable over 'he's so fine'/'my sweet lord' lawsuit.
@sartorato I had thought that when I heard it on iTunes. But seeing it here with the video, I was just able to work out that they were suggesting songs that This Song might sound like, namely "Rescue Me" and "Sugar Pie Honey Bunch" and at the end he certainly tossed in part of one of those songs for a laugh. Has anyone pointed out, speaking of which, that the "lady" in the big hat who says one of those lines is Ron Wood?
ya know he had the best sense of humour. suffered fools gladly. python bonzos and his musical hall tastes w/ the uke. he could of if he wanted 2 be the next whoever then, deft at musician picking. he kinda of had this steeley dan/SNL band sound but underdone. the holy and profane were his keys. like he worshipped groucho and dalai lama at once. threw it all away by 80's for movies racing and his family. better than his more famous bandmates by far as history is proving. zero ego.

TRIVIA: the man playing the judge is none other than Phil Spector ( he blew a girls head off with a hand gun in his home....and is still in jail) who helped Harrison produce All Things Must Pass. Spector was the first record producer to attain rock star status....his name was as well known as the beatles

@ScattySafari my guess is today with all the sampleing etc there are deals struck and fees paid to owners of these sampled songs even before the recording is released, or even fully written. It would have to be like that otherwise there would be constant litigation
That court case against 'My Sweet Lord' annoys me so much. If a song I had written sounded a bit like a song by George Harrison I would be honoured, not try to squeeze money out of one of the most genuinely nice and kind musicians ever. I love you George <3
@Coocey It is indeed a terrible thing to happen to such a nice guy, but when you trade your art for money, you're playing the same game as all those parasitical bastards.
@Coocey the short version is that an ex-Beatles manager persuaded george to put "My Sweet Lord on All things must pass"...then went out and bought the rights to "He's So Fine" specifically so he could sue george for a big pay day. This is how I remember the story but if I'm wrong please correct me. On another note: The first time I heard My Sweet Lord in about 1970/71( ?) I picked up on the similarity....my older sister had the 45 rpm record of it (He's So Fine)
@Coocey What does George Harrison being a nice guy have to do with whether the case was justified? No one is suggesting George had malicious intent, but "My Sweet Lord" does have the very same melody and harmony as "He's So Fine" -- and it's not like George couldn't afford to pay for it. So save your annoyance for some real injustice.
@friendofthefunk Most rock songs are based on others, it's very incestious. Satisfaction and Mr. Soul (Buffalo Springfield) have trhe EXACT same guitar riff. Abiiety to pay has nothing to do about it. Question is who owns exactly what notes and for how long? Every time Happy Birthday is sung there is a roaylty paid to that dead guys family members.
@28if Using someone else's guitar riff might be a grey area. But if you take the lead melody of someone else's composition and put it over the exact same chord changes, you're basically taking the song (minus the lyrics). it's not unreasonable for that someone to want to be paid for it. Or do you not believe in copyrights at all? What if someone recorded a George Harrison song. Should George get paid? I bet you'd say yes.
@28if As for "ability to pay has nothing to do about it," nonsense! Complaining that a multimillionaire has to pay for a hit song he passed off as his own is ridiculous. Boo fucking hoo! On the other hand, if it was some song by a no-name struggling artist that only sold 100 copies, it wouldn't make any damn difference.
@friendofthefunk bugger off mate, you didn't make it, doesn't mean he's "shaved" of his rights! you have NO idea what g.h. and of the the rest of the beat. went thru.. but now that he's gone, your a knight on a white horse, not to mention, a "Dark one" . stewart
When i was little I used to listen to this song at least 5 times a day lol... have the lyrics memorized.. i learned it ffrom the Rutles movie (hahha george was in it) and my dads iPod!! RIP george!! You'll always be in our hearts<3
One of the rare instances you get to see george had a rather distinctive sense of humour. Oh, he may not have directed this, but he certainly went along for the ride and you can see touches that can't be anything but him.
@jcb21691 Oh, I completely agree that his music always had a dry humour, maybe even a bit of whimsy to it. The video though, was what I was directing my comment about. I liked how it was very reminiscent of a "Monty Python" as 1982pencil commented. Some of his other videos, you have to admit, were a little strange. His interviews were always brilliant, no argument there. Cheers.
Love, LOVE, Love how he pokes fun at himself. I still don't think My Sweet Lord sounds like He's So Fine.....With all his talent he didn't need to to that at all. Love his sense of humor; RIP George <3 you!
@perrysalembinks You are not alone. I never saw the comparison myself. When I heard My Sweet Lord, I didn't say wow that sounds like He's so fine, that never crossed my mind lol
Amen, Kyrie! George Harrison was a truly good human being; a talented artist and an extraordinary guitarist and lyricist.
On a lighter note, his hair was so ripply and wavy in this video. George's father Harold Sr. had VERY wavy hair, so we know where George got his lush, wavy mane!
Simplesmente maravlhoso......
If this is his response to his being sued over "My Sweet Lord," I've heard both versions, and whether it was accidental, or intentional, it was stolen.
I really wish court could actually be like this and then George would sing and we'd all dance around and people would start playing the saxophone and the judge would'nt care. I wish that could happen. By the way 3:23-3:26 is so random and funny! George is so awesome. :)
I really wish court could actually be like this and then George would sing and we'd all dance around and people would start playing the saxophone and the judge would'nt care. I wish that could happen. By the way 3:23-2:26 is so random and funny! George is so awesome. :)
Actually, I'm pretty sure this was in reaction to the copyright lawsuit brought by the Chiffons against "My Sweet Lord" (for plagiarizing from "He's So Fine")
@ignobilitor yes it was. "This tune has nothing bright about it" is a direct reference to Bright Tunes, the holders of the rights to "He's so fine". There are several other references to the suit in the lyrics.
very good videos, are of excellent quality image, congratulations =) and I like your channel ...
when you want to pass to see my videos of the Beatles (though not of as high profile as yours hehe) and if you want any comments or put a score! Greetings, raquelmishe.
@spongebeatles that stinks =[ i was 7...i wish i had just been old enough to understand what had happened. has more of an impact on me now than then =/
He was in court and saw me and my BFF Hope dancing. Everyone in the court joined in dancing. Even George. He was copying me and Hope's moves. He loved us.
@slamoslut I wasn't talking to you is my point. Neither were 3 of the other people you sent half-retarded comments to. It's weird seeing someone post 4 times in a row and one of them telling someone else to get a life.
@gregbutcher1 There's a copyright law that if a song is sampled, but only a few seconds of it are used, it's OK. Also, with longer samples (apparently rappers can neither sing NOR write music), the credits give credit to the original songs' writers...
@blackwhimsy The Beatles were the first to do music videos... November 23, 1965 they made a series of promotional films specifically designed to be broadcast by television companies throughout the world. Videos of 'We Can Work It Out', 'Day Tripper', 'Help!', 'Ticket To Ride' and 'I Feel Fine' were filmed. He and the other ex-beatles did some very interesting videos in the 70's... Of the Fab-4 George and Paul were my favorite song writers/artists post Beatles...
@JuliaPhillies31 Yeah it kinda makes you wonder if they were also responsible for MTV... I'm not saying they made MTV but their videos seemed to spark other artists to make videos and somewhere along the line someone said "Hey don't Bogart the joint bud... Oh and why don't we make an all music channel with all these videos?" (or something like that)
George released this song not long after the settlement was made with the Chiffons on the plagiarism case over "He's So Fine". "This song, in black or white and as far as I know, don't infringe on anyone's copyright, Ohhh!"
He always had the driest sense of humour out of the four of them as far as I could tell.
To answer your question... yes that is George. Its just his hair that is different. Its curly. VERY CURLY! I guess my hair will have curls when im an adult. Love you George!
He ripped the main riff from Marc Bolan lol

I really wish court could actually be like this and then George would sing and we'd all dance around and people would start playing the saxophone and the judge would'nt care. I wish that could happen. By the way 3:23-3:26 is so random and funny! George is so awesome. :)

Actually, I'm pretty sure this was in reaction to the copyright lawsuit brought by the Chiffons against "My Sweet Lord" (for plagiarizing from "He's So Fine")
ignobilitor 11 months ago 2
@ignobilitor yes it was. "This tune has nothing bright about it" is a direct reference to Bright Tunes, the holders of the rights to "He's so fine". There are several other references to the suit in the lyrics.

@ignobilitor you are correct this was about his lawsuit

The Beatles were amazing beyond all belief. This is for sure. But George will always be the one who gave it to us straight. God rest you, George.

this song is making fun of the fact that he was sued over plagirizing the song "He's So Fine" by the Chiffons

He was in court and saw me and my BFF Hope dancing. Everyone in the court joined in dancing. Even George. He was copying me and Hope's moves. He loved us.

so if George got sued for this song, how come the artist today copy and sample nearly everything they do and get away with it ?
gregbutcher1 1 year ago
@gregbutcher1 so if we used to burn witches...
so if black people weren't allowed in normal bathrooms...
so if you tried CPR on someone in public in the 1800's you'd be shot...
ect.

@Anuranpostage Point?
slamoslut 1 year ago
@slamoslut I wasn't talking to you is my point. Neither were 3 of the other people you sent half-retarded comments to. It's weird seeing someone post 4 times in a row and one of them telling someone else to get a life.
Anuranpostage 1 year ago
@gregbutcher1 There's a copyright law that if a song is sampled, but only a few seconds of it are used, it's OK. Also, with longer samples (apparently rappers can neither sing NOR write music), the credits give credit to the original songs' writers...
shmuli9 1 year ago
@gregbutcher1 they don't, you just don't hear about it like landmark cases of this nature

I love the line, "there's nothing bright about it." Bright, as in Bright Tunes, the publisher that sued George.

I love George's 70s videos.I can't think of anybody who was making vids like this at the time.
blackwhimsy 1 year ago 24
@blackwhimsy The Beatles were the first to do music videos... November 23, 1965 they made a series of promotional films specifically designed to be broadcast by television companies throughout the world. Videos of 'We Can Work It Out', 'Day Tripper', 'Help!', 'Ticket To Ride' and 'I Feel Fine' were filmed. He and the other ex-beatles did some very interesting videos in the 70's... Of the Fab-4 George and Paul were my favorite song writers/artists post Beatles...
TrickyRick59 8 months ago
@TrickyRick59 they also made one for Rain.. it was like the early form of MTV
JuliaPhillies31 8 months ago
@JuliaPhillies31 Yeah it kinda makes you wonder if they were also responsible for MTV... I'm not saying they made MTV but their videos seemed to spark other artists to make videos and somewhere along the line someone said "Hey don't Bogart the joint bud... Oh and why don't we make an all music channel with all these videos?" (or something like that)
TrickyRick59 8 months ago
George released this song not long after the settlement was made with the Chiffons on the plagiarism case over "He's So Fine". "This song, in black or white and as far as I know, don't infringe on anyone's copyright, Ohhh!"
He always had the driest sense of humour out of the four of them as far as I could tell.

George Harrison, great human being. Fabulous song. Rest in peace, George.
