Artistic, great music, awesome plot development that tells a cogent story, actually quite a bit of depth to the story... Not just mass produced junk that with CGI that attempts to shock and awes the audience with nudity, sex, or controversial themes etc.
Modern film is like modern music, paintings, sculpture, architecture, literature (all the arts). It simply wants to dazzle you with effects and controversy, but really isn't all that creative.
Its a great film, that was almost ruined by criminal cutting the film to pieces, its good to see the film remastered. This is a great great film, I do like the good the bad and the ugly more, due to the trio of masterful actors. Above all Eli Wallach. Its down to taste.
This is my favorite western. Right above "My Name is Nobody" & "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly". I have watched it dozens of time and always learn something new about the movie each time I view it again.
A very interesting review and I agree with it completely. I am old enough to recall seeing this film during its original theatrical release. I was 20 years old then and just expecting another shoot-em-up western. The first shock was the appearance of blue-eyed Henry Fonda as evil incarnate. How could that be, he's Henry Fonda, he's a good guy, isn't he? Well, he broke the mold in this film. And I was then simply stunned by the depth of the story, the visual images, the sound track---everything.
@moparmadness1 show respect. the black you refer to is Woody Strode; one of the first Blacks in the NFL. went on to become a fine actor. You wouldn't call Jerry Lewis a jewish guy.
@jaggarjaggarjaggar , I mean no disrespect to Mr.Strode.Now that I know is name..My comment was not meant to be a derogatory toward Mr.Strode I just didn't know his name.Thats all. We still friends?
I've watched (and own copies of) The Dollar Trilogy and Once Upon a Time in America but this one I haven't watched, and I really want to. I didn't even know about it until I read a short essay on ot on a little Mexican book called Taller de Cinefilia.
nice job. the first time i saw this i kept wondering "why do they keep playing this stupid harmonica sound over and over" then at the end i was like "ooooooh" and i loved it. And yeah...can't go wrong with Ennio Morricone.
Wow... What a great review.. and what a GREAT movie... I've seen it many many times, including at the theater. And I know I will see it many more times. Thanks...
I was watching a doc. about filmmaking and they were talking a great deal about this movie. I can't remember which doc. it was but I remember being struck at the time by the scenes they showed from this movie and how beautifully they were shot. great review as always. :)
Thanks. I threw out my shoulder, so I can't properly do my hair and therefore look like crap, haha. It's also really hard to get dressed because I can't comfortably raise my arm above waist level--drinking is a feat in itself. It's basically the same kind of info I've been doing all along, I'm just not in visually in them. Not sure if I will keep it up or not. It's easier in the sense I don't have to depend on light, but gathering clips can be tedious. :-/
Is it really? Ugh! I kept trying to hunt down what it was and multiple sources called it a sawed off shotgun (other film buffs and not necessarily gun enthusiasts). Even though I live in Texas, I know absolutely nothing about guns :-p Thank you for the clarification, uzi! *^_^*
I tried watching this once. From the first minute, it almost seemed like a comedy lampooning the genre. Every pregnant pause seemed hilariously overdone to me. I quit watching halfway through. I guess it doesn't help that I'm not a big fan of westerns, but I felt a similar sort of thing watching Eyes Wide Shut. :-/
The very beginning is very drawn out, and some parts such as with the fly are quite comical. That's one of the reasons why it did so poorly in the US during its initial release--those pauses, all the waiting, etc. For a western fan, one can almost make of game of finding the references in various shots. Even though it's a great film, it's not everyone's cup of tea.
Fantastic. Admittedly, in the past I've been guilty of passing over your reviews week by week but I see now that I was wrong in doing so. Great review of a magnificent film.
It's hard for me to pick a favorite movie of all time, but if I had to pick just one, I would be satisfied picking this one. Amazing cast, story, characters, music and directing, a perfect movie in my eyes.
The first time I saw this movie I was blown away. I watched the movie 4 times in the next 5 days, which is pretty insane considering that it's a 3 hour movie and I didn't get bored for one second. I just couldn't get over how great it was.
Thanks, bonefoot. It IS great on so many levels. Every time I've seen this (although I say this with every great movie), I really do find new things I never noticed before. Although, I watched it with commentary last time (wasn't that great), and the guy called Woody Strode's character's gun a sawed off! As uzi pointed out, it is not, so I'm mad about that (not really mad, but it does merit a mad face emoticon which this doesn't allow). It is great, though :-)
He definitely did, and every actor I've seen interviewed that speaks of him always do so fondly. They said he was a great person, and great director, and a director who really loved actors.
Check out a guy on youtube his name is herve attia he shows what a lot of the scenes in this movie look like now, its awesome
