close your eyes play this song....now think waking up 4:00am looking outside the 36th floor of a condo watching the city lights and traffic. Your still a little drunk or high from the night before and theres a beautiful woman happily asleep in the bed cause you did your duty. You smile at cause you feel good. This happened to me in Miami while this song was playing. I always will remember it.
Such an awesome song. Lush and complicated yet so simple a melody with a subtle guitar solo that is sublime beyond words. This is what all music should aspire to be.
I remember hearing this on CD101.9 (NYC) and I didn't realize how much I love SD or DF's music. For the past week I;ve been listening to nothing but his music. So in love!!! sounds like Steve Winwood on the piano/organ. OMG!! I love this song.
EVERY TIME (AND I MEAN EVERY TIME!) I HEAR THIS SONG I WISH I WAS AT YANKEE STADIUM ON 18 OCTOBER 1977 WHEN GAME SIX OF THE 1977 WORLD SERIES WAS PLAYED - WORLD SERIES CHAMPION NEW YORK YANKEES!!!!!!! I AM ALSO REMINDED OF 1977 WORLD SERIES MVP REGGIE JACKSON (#44) AND AMERICAN LEAGUE CY YOUNG AWARD WINNER SPARKY LYLE (#28) - BOTH OF THE 1977 WORLD SERIES CHAMPION NEW YORK YANKEES!!!! I ALSO THINK ABOUT THE 1977 NEW YORK YANKEES IN GENERAL EVERYTIME I HEAR THIS SONG!!! GREAT SONG!!
There's a lot of cynicism in it as usual for Fagan; it isn't all just looking back wistfully; there's a harsh, critical undertone to this reverie. He's going back there in his head, but it's with a detached, knowing, literary loftiness. Sometimes the Dan, whilst brilliant, are just a little too smug in their knowingness. He's almost at that point
This is easily one of the smoothest stretches of vinyl I own, and I have about 600 LPs. Love this song. The video is a blast, but I am glad I heard it on vinyl long before seeing it.
Why Donald Fagen/Walter Becker/Steely Dan's music makes me feel absolutely alive whenever I hear it...be it 1981 or 2011...I don't know. And frankly I don't care. Just as long as it continues to work it's magic on my soul I'm thankful.
@shotelco They're actually part of a time machine. The part that brings back the best of the '70s and early '80s.They also ease You into times before the world culture was taken over by manic paranoia,a good time where music actually was fun and had a great feel.A time I wouldn't mind going back to Myself,
Now only to get a Datsun 280Z and put in a pioneer supertuner cassette deck, and find just that right FM station, You know, with newer music and few commercials..
I discovered this back in the nineteen eightees when it was used as the intro-music for a moviequiz called 'Cinemanie' presented by Michel Follet. :-) Brilliant music!
"introduce me to that big blonde, she's got a touch of Tuesday Weld"......"she's wearing Ambush and a french twist"........good groovin and really tight music. Good to buzz to.
I'll say it again, I love that song. I've always knew either Steely Dan or Donald Fagen which you may call him, he has made some progress during the eighties. It has been on my dreams for a long time. That's cool.
One of the best songs I've ever heard that epitomizes the mood of 1962. The lyrics are great! ' We've got provisions, and lots of beer, prepare to meet the challenge of the new frontier.' This Fukushima thing has me surfing e-Bay for vintage Civilian Defense radiation detectors..open up the doors and climb into the dawn!
How many jazzy songs feature a cowbell, and a harmonica? This is a great album! I own it on vinyl and CD ( personally I think the record sounds better).
I don't know Steely Dan or Donald Fagen all that well other than his wonderful music, but
after listening all of his music, I've gather Steely Dan or Donald Fagen has such biggest heart in his beautiful voice, that whoever marry him, that you better stay with him, because he is a wonderful handsome buy. I'm just letting you know about Steely Dan or Donald Fagen.
The man who won a Grammy engineering the studio track of this tune, Roger Nichols (who won a total of 6 Grammys with Steely Dan) has been battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer and after many months in the hospital is destitute. If you can, please help Roger by going to his website rogernichols dot c o m and giving generously! Thanks.
I remember when I first heard this.. I asked myself..Is that Steely Dan?? It is so groovy, I had to look it up because I have been a Steely Dan fan growing up and I recognized this voice... You cant miss it! The first solo album Fagan did, "Nightfly"(1981)... Post Steely Dan... Sounds very similar to Steely Dan's "Gaucho" (1980). Thats why I dig so much...
My Uncle started to build a Bomb Shelter, then color tv came along. He never finished it. Nixon went to China and then Maude became a hit. He liked Maude. He would regale us with witticisms(sp?) from Maude at Thanksgiving dinner. I no longer go to Thanksgiving dinner.
well these folks were living in a world that hadn't been taken over and reformed by capitalism/the "evil corporations" that nobody wants to acknowledge how they've totally taken control of our lives. ...but anyhow got to move on...this album/song rocks~
WFM 96.9 Mexico City, no need to say more just thank you to Martin Hernandez and Alejandro Gonzales I for all the music lessons thru my teen years gracias maestros se los agradesco
Yet more scintillating guitar-work from the absolutely incomparable and inimitable Larry Carlton. I literally get shivers from these solos and the ones he does on the cover of "Ruby" that's also on "The Nightfly"!
The New Frontier: Kennedy and the early sixties, a different American with an innocence and virtue now lost to jaded cynicism. This song capture the feel of the era well.
@nightfevers "Kennedy", "innocence" and "virtue" in the same sentence is funny. As much a BS artist as any politician ever was. The only thing "new frontier" about Kennedy was his political machine was ahead of it's time in creating the "cult of personality" image that is now very commonplace. I know that comes off as jaded cynicism, but it's the reality of that whole Camelot sham.
