  • close your eyes play this song....now think waking up 4:00am looking outside the 36th floor of a condo watching the city lights and traffic. Your still a little drunk or high from the night before and theres a beautiful woman happily asleep in the bed cause you did your duty. You smile at cause you feel good. This happened to me in Miami while this song was playing. I always will remember it.

  • Steely Dan/Donald Fagen would be the PERFECT party music... if my friends liked the same music. (Or at least understood it)

  • Awesome song.

  • Such an awesome song. Lush and complicated yet so simple a melody with a subtle guitar solo that is sublime beyond words. This is what all music should aspire to be.

  • I think most of steeley dans music is really related to drugs the lyrics hit home

  • DF puts quality into his work, that's why you can listen to it over and over again. I have the feeling that he is a perfectionist.

  • DO YOU LIKE THIS, MR. BANEY??

  • saw ike leave then the Kennedy come in I WANT MY FLYING BACK BACK AN MY X-RAY GLASS'S they knew we would be waitin on these item's in 2000

  • MORE COWBELL

  • I love this song. whether he's Steely Dan or Donald Fagen, he is still has a very beautiful voice.

Rikki you better keep that number.

  • lets just enjoy the tune and forget about politics....its just so much more creative than todays stuff i think.

  • I love this song, whether he's a Steely Dan or Donald Fagen, that is a lovely

    beautiful pretty voice, ever.

  • I remember hearing this on CD101.9 (NYC) and I didn't realize how much I love SD or DF's music. For the past week I;ve been listening to nothing but his music. So in love!!! sounds like Steve Winwood on the piano/organ. OMG!! I love this song.

  • A TRULY TIMELESS TUNE!!!

  • How can anyone dislike this? This is chicken noodle soup for the soul!

  • Songs like these reach your inner feelings. Not the BS they produce

    nowadays.

  • EVERY TIME (AND I MEAN EVERY TIME!) I HEAR THIS SONG I WISH I WAS AT YANKEE STADIUM ON 18 OCTOBER 1977 WHEN GAME SIX OF THE 1977 WORLD SERIES WAS PLAYED - WORLD SERIES CHAMPION NEW YORK YANKEES!!!!!!! I AM ALSO REMINDED OF 1977 WORLD SERIES MVP REGGIE JACKSON (#44) AND AMERICAN LEAGUE CY YOUNG AWARD WINNER SPARKY LYLE (#28) - BOTH OF THE 1977 WORLD SERIES CHAMPION NEW YORK YANKEES!!!! I ALSO THINK ABOUT THE 1977 NEW YORK YANKEES IN GENERAL EVERYTIME I HEAR THIS SONG!!! GREAT SONG!!

  • cest absolument génial il n y as rien a redire sauf M E R C I

  • 4 dislikes? what did their parents do to them?

  • So cool...

  • Donald come home and see us all--we'll have times like never before and fuck the world for the day.

  • There's a lot of cynicism in it as usual for Fagan; it isn't all just looking back wistfully; there's a harsh, critical undertone to this reverie. He's going back there in his head, but it's with a detached, knowing, literary loftiness. Sometimes the Dan, whilst brilliant, are just a little too smug in their knowingness. He's almost at that point

  • 4.... What you need?

  • Four people have no soul. They're still waiting for the Reds to push the button down.

  • Man I keep thinking that Steely dan did this but it was donald Fagen solo.

  • 4 people got lost exploring the new frontier.

  • @Mhinx2268 - And I bet they landed up in somewhere between GaGaLand & Bieberville.

Suck for them though - they're missing out on the good music.

  • @Mhinx2268 everyones so freaked no one wants to say shit... the key word is ......

  • @Mhinx2268

5, but i think it still is a good result :)

  • This is easily one of the smoothest stretches of vinyl I own, and I have about 600 LPs. Love this song. The video is a blast, but I am glad I heard it on vinyl long before seeing it.

  • Why Donald Fagen/Walter Becker/Steely Dan's music makes me feel absolutely alive whenever I hear it...be it 1981 or 2011...I don't know. And frankly I don't care. Just as long as it continues to work it's magic on my soul I'm thankful.

  • I second that Feeling...because those effects on my soul are mutual.

  • @shotelco They're actually part of a time machine. The part that brings back the best of the '70s and early '80s.They also ease You into times before the world culture was taken over by manic paranoia,a good time where music actually was fun and had a great feel.A time I wouldn't mind going back to Myself,

Now only to get a Datsun 280Z and put in a pioneer supertuner cassette deck, and find just that right FM station, You know, with newer music and few commercials..

  • this is still groovin'

  • I discovered this back in the nineteen eightees when it was used as the intro-music for a moviequiz called 'Cinemanie' presented by Michel Follet. :-) Brilliant music!

    Thanks for sharing this!

  • when i hear this, i know were gonna have a wing ding!

  • "introduce me to that big blonde, she's got a touch of Tuesday Weld"......"she's wearing Ambush and a french twist"........good groovin and really tight music. Good to buzz to.

  • @cjrimmer71 you are way into that partcular line...

  • Sounds real good. These guys always had some funk in them.

  • Sandra Dee Lawson.

  • This song is the soundtrack to my childhood.Utterly timeless!!

  • This guy has done so many GREAT things but THIS TUNE is his BEST both on the instrumentals and vocals!

  • shut up sandralawson

  • @nomezy101 You shut up, you're just jealous because JoesTheShow is more nicer to me than you do.

  • genious

  • I'll say it again, I love that song. I've always knew either Steely Dan or Donald Fagen which you may call him, he has made some progress during the eighties. It has been on my dreams for a long time. That's cool.

  • @sandralawson18 Steely Dan is a band his name is Donald Fagen.

  • Steely Dan or Donald Fagen has such beautiful voice here, that I just can't stop listen

to any of his music. Donald or Steely for which you may call it, I love your voice.

  • Who would dislike this song? The ending is the icing,

  • I almost mistake him for Sting and The Group Police. They both sound so much alike

they both got so much beautiful voice. I've never get tire of Steely Dan or Donald

Fagen. Mr. Steely Dan or Donald Fagen, if you could read my letters from You Tube,

I've just wanted to let you know, that I love all of your songs, and your beautiful voice.

    Sandra Dee Lawson.

  • great as always --time finds me here again and again---dot dot dot

  • She's got a touch of Tuesday Weld.

  • Quel que soit le nombre d'années, on n'oublie jamais donald fagen. Il est dans notre subconscient et hop! il réapparaît. Thank you for this song.

  • One of the best songs I've ever heard that epitomizes the mood of 1962. The lyrics are great! ' We've got provisions, and lots of beer, prepare to meet the challenge of the new frontier.' This Fukushima thing has me surfing e-Bay for vintage Civilian Defense radiation detectors..open up the doors and climb into the dawn!

  • I can listen to this nice man Steely Dan or Donald Fagen all day. Such beautiful voice.

  • How many jazzy songs feature a cowbell, and a harmonica? This is a great album! I own it on vinyl and CD ( personally I think the record sounds better).

  • in however many years it was all ago we all met,

except it was just two of us, the pair of us, just we two,

i'D HEARD the nightfly several times before, I owned the friggin' thing, although

had we just got it all together, you know who you are , you're out there!!

the look, the legs, the pout, the squint, the wheelchair, the tangled wreckage,

  • "we've got to have some music in the New Frontier!" - Charles Sharr Murray

  • I don't know Steely Dan or Donald Fagen all that well other than his wonderful music, but

after listening all of his music, I've gather Steely Dan or Donald Fagen has such biggest heart in his beautiful voice, that whoever marry him, that you better stay with him, because he is a wonderful handsome buy. I'm just letting you know about Steely Dan or Donald Fagen.

  • The Nightfly is my favorite album of all time - only 8 tracks but simply sublime...

  • Very beautiful voice, with that lovely like Steely Dan, I can stay with music forever.

    Sandra Dee Lawson.

  • I've been look for song for a long time, and it has been on my dreams everysince then.

If that's Steely Dan, then he surely has very pretty voice. Thank you very much.

    I love that song.

    Sandra Dee Lawson.

  • Godfather of sophistication

  • I remember when I first heard this.. I asked myself..Is that Steely Dan?? It is so groovy, I had to look it up because I have been a Steely Dan fan growing up and I recognized this voice... You cant miss it! The first solo album Fagan did, "Nightfly"(1981)... Post Steely Dan... Sounds very similar to Steely Dan's "Gaucho" (1980). Thats why I dig so much...

  • doesnt get any better than this, it even has cowbell

  • My Uncle started to build a Bomb Shelter, then color tv came along. He never finished it. Nixon went to China and then Maude became a hit. He liked Maude. He would regale us with witticisms(sp?) from Maude at Thanksgiving dinner. I no longer go to Thanksgiving dinner.

  • @mjn345 Suddenly I don't want turkey.

  • well these folks were living in a world that hadn't been taken over and reformed by capitalism/the "evil corporations" that nobody wants to acknowledge how they've totally taken control of our lives. ...but anyhow got to move on...this album/song rocks~

  • @jjsabenorio reformed by capitalism/the "evil corporations". Really? Really? I look at Wisconsin, and laugh at the sheer ignorance of your statement.

  • WFM 96.9 Mexico City, no need to say more just thank you to Martin Hernandez and Alejandro Gonzales I for all the music lessons thru my teen years gracias maestros se los agradesco

  • Yet more scintillating guitar-work from the absolutely incomparable and inimitable Larry Carlton. I literally get shivers from these solos and the ones he does on the cover of "Ruby" that's also on "The Nightfly"!

  • Follow these instructions if you want to get in a good mood: play 'New Frontier'.

  • Nightfly is SUCH a fiiiiine album

  • FAGEN just understood music and how to touch chords, with that voice and harmonys he made music for everybody----- the new frontier

  • One of the best Albums ever. Listen to it since 1988! It is so timeless and elegant...love it!

  • sweet memories .. when i was young and cute .. and too stupid and shy to realise how much ladies liked me those days :)

  • The New Frontier: Kennedy and the early sixties, a different American with an innocence and virtue now lost to jaded cynicism. This song capture the feel of the era well.

  • @nightfevers "Kennedy", "innocence" and "virtue" in the same sentence is funny. As much a BS artist as any politician ever was. The only thing "new frontier" about Kennedy was his political machine was ahead of it's time in creating the "cult of personality" image that is now very commonplace. I know that comes off as jaded cynicism, but it's the reality of that whole Camelot sham.

  • @chfpontiac A Lee Harvey Oswald fan, then...

  • @chfpontiac right on brother, you know if the liberal media had named aplay after nixon it would have been real bad obama is the new JFK!

  • I agree that this sounds like Steely Dan.......yet.....Donald is Steely Dan............he/they rock!

  • Notice how this still sounds like a Steely Dan song though it's Donald Fagen solo.

Much like John Fogerty solo sounds a lot like CCR.

  • @Nivicoman and robbie dupree steal away sounds like the doobie brothers what a fool believes. they have great taste in music.

  • @Nivicoman It's co-produced by Fagen and Walter Becker. This is a Steely Dan song. They were/are Steely Dan.

  • finally a decent version of this great song! Thanks!!

  • @fanafe1

    :) YW

  • @fanafe1 God... more memories of college days... Someone just introduce me to that big blonde...
