Only when you want to make or recieve calls. Otherwise they are sent to voicemail or forwarded. You can check voicemail fom another phone if its off too.

10 yrs ago Internet companies where giving software for you to make local and long distance calls for FREE... I try them all and people couldn't believe when I tell them... Ofcourse I had dial up back then and DSL was costly but a fast internet calls are smooth... now all those Free calling internet companies are gone but this goes around that trouble they had and works great... Im trying to do a test of connecting it straight to my moden so my pc stays off but moden is always on using a spliter

If you don't want to use a pc try the NetTalk tk6000. It uses an almost identical tigerjet device and service costs the same. If you orded it online now it comes with lifetime service. All you do is plug it into a power outlet, then into the ethernet port of a modem or router, and lastly plug in a phone. Once the phone rings, its ready. You can also plug it into a computer although there is know softphone program that alows you to use your computer's sound system.

I've had the magicjack since may now. Its cheap and it works. Sure it still has a few flaws, but thats just like anything that is less than 5 years old. They are still learning on whats wrong and still working on it and trying to get more numbers. I ordered magic jack on the internet on May 30, 2008 and received it via USPS on June 3, 2008. Took me 5 minutes to setup and gave me a personalized telephone number I could use right away. Tried it and.... it works. Called my step daughter.... she said the clarity is way better compared to a cellphone. Just 30 minutes ago I tried calling my friend in Canada... and wow it worked really fine! I am happy withe my magic jack... I hope it won't break easily. Just don't drop it & it should work fine.

If you are having problems then it's not the MagicJack itself. IT WORKS FINE FOR SOME OF US. Like I said the MJ is subject to the same types of issues as cell phones.

Just ordered my free trial. Got a dedicated PC to avoid these problems everyones B!tching about. The quality of these VOIP products depend on a lot of technical hardware overhead between you, the network servers, the person you're calling, and the machine you're using. Save some money, get a cheap old PC just for this MJ, that's if you don't already have one. Make sure it has USB 2.0 and a good network adapter, and you're good to go. If you're a techy this is a no brainer. SAVE SOME MONEY.
