even though i don,t live in the devastation areas that hurricane rita tore thru i used to work on the supply boats in grand chenier and seen the towns completely leveled those folks lost everything there, and my heart&prayers goes out to them &their families, hoping they make comeback its such a beautiful area god blessed them all.
I was there in 1957 when so many bodies were piled up in private garages w.ice. the town of Cameron was wiped off the map. A few of us had to stick it out on the base. All aircraft and most units were evacuated. I was in the 68th air refiewling outfit...
Rita was worse than Katrina. It was the levee that collapsed from lack of upkeep that made Katrina so bad. I live in Lake Charles and the damage we saw was incredible and the fact that it was 2 weeks until we could return and the amount of trees that fell through people's house's and on the road was unbelievable. It was a community effort to get where we are now in Lake Charles, Cameron is still not the same and probably never will be a lot of people just didn't go back
@catdancers3 I live in Lake Charles also and it was almost three weeks before we went back to our house. We actually did not get that much damage(Thank God). We had some shingles, had to replace our downstairs floor, fix our chimney(it fell) and we lost our pear tree. It was Cameron Parish that got the worst of the storm.
We stayed in Ragley before Rita, during Rita, after Rita. FEMA sucks. My Family and I were scared for hours. I hope I will never, never experience a Horrible Hurricane, or a Natural Disaster. One was enough. God Bless those that help each other, We are Survivors...
I get pretty upset everytime i see pictures of Rita...we had 50 grand in dammage at my house...but it did make everyone closer....i even got to know my neighbors....just dont want to go through it again.
We left Cameron two days before Rita hit. I can still remember watching the news when they said it turnned into a cat 2. We went to Texas and took us FOREVER to get there. I wish people would talk about Hurricane Rita more and what it did to Lake Charles and all of Cameron Praish but nooo.... no one will see past New Orleans. They should have left and the whole, "We had no mone to leave." is bs! Everytime we left for a hurricane in cameron we didn't have a dime! But we got out there!
@LetsPanicy we initially went to shreveport, then went to dallas like two days later. That ride to shreveport. We left like that wednsday evening, we didnt get there until the next morning. That ride was twelve hours, took like 5 or 6 to get to deridder.
we evacuated from rita (in lc) and were really lucky because we went south of the interstate and took the back roads up to new roads. (north of baton rouge) without there being any traffic at all.
we evacuated from lake charles, and my grandparents home (in cameron) was completely gone. bodies were missing from graves. i they barely mention the damage from hurricane rita, bcause hurricane katrina hit to. its not our fault that they didnt evacuate.
wow that was actually a really good video. i have lived in LC all my life and i can tell you, rita was not good times. we were very fortunate for such minimal loss of life. thanks for posting.
Great video. Thank you so much for showing what Rita did. I know a lot of people didn't realize how bad that was. And extra special thanks for showing the wind damage. If I hear run from the water hide from the wind one more time I think I'll SCREAM! RUN FROM IT ALL PEOPLE!

It pisses me off that Katrina is still getting all the publicity and we're still treated like we're nothing. Rita did WAY more damage than Katrina.
