This cover really doesn't work for me. It isn't different enough from the Dire Straits version (at least until about 3:30 or so); listening to this just makes me wish I was hearing the original. And somehow it sounds kind of flat, acoustically, although maybe that's just the recording. It's pretty much just a Metallica cover of the song, which is fine if you're a huge Metallica fan but not interesting otherwise. A song as iconic as this needs a complete reinvention.

I think the hard ass feel of metallica was lost here. Somehow I know that James Hetfield could kick mark knoflers ass but in this he didnt. This would of swelled as a civil war song/rock song!

Guitar playing-wise, I say it's a tie, Knopfler has his unique lead playing style and Hetfield has his unmatched rhythm capabilities. @RikkudoSennin it's rushed, simplified, has half the feeling and emotion of the original and even though Mark Knopfler doesn't have a great voice, James Hetfield's is even less suited to this kind of music. Don't get me wrong, I love metallica and they have some great covers: This is not one of them. I still liked it for the novelty of hearing one of my favorite bands cover another favorite, but it's not something I'll hear often. (it would have been much better if it was not acoustic, I think).
Nobody can say that Knopfler plays it better cause all guitar players have a unique sound and it would be biased...personally I prefer Knopfler but nobody can deny that his voice is unquestionably the best and not Brandon Flowers can top it or cover Romeo & Juliet not metallica nobody can top that voice.
Metallica's spirit of desperation and destruction can not execute things written by Knopfler's spirit of hope and pacifism. That's why this version sucks. I hope Knopfler will get the inspiration for many masterpieces before he dies.

For once Metallica can't come EVEN CLOOOOOOOOSE to the original. They have 'not' captured other covers but never one as far as this. Hetfield does an admittedly bang up job with the clean guitar though, amazing.
I love Metallica and I also love Dire Straits, but honestly, the original is great and much better then this although Metallica had tried and did a good effort, but Mark is so much better at it.

@RikkudoSennin it's rushed, simplified, has half the feeling and emotion of the original and even though Mark Knopfler doesn't have a great voice, James Hetfield's is even less suited to this kind of music. Don't get me wrong, I love metallica and they have some great covers: This is not one of them. I still liked it for the novelty of hearing one of my favorite bands cover another favorite, but it's not something I'll hear often. (it would have been much better if it was not acoustic, I think).

Nobody can say that Knopfler plays it better cause all guitar players have a unique sound and it would be biased...personally I prefer Knopfler but nobody can deny that his voice is unquestionably the best and not Brandon Flowers can top it or cover Romeo & Juliet not metallica nobody can top that voice.

Metallica's spirit of desperation and destruction can not execute things written by Knopfler's spirit of hope and pacifism. That's why this version sucks. I hope Knopfler will get the inspiration for many masterpieces before he dies.

Of course it's not as good as original version,and I think metallica know that too.But they cover this song as they're style.Cause when you cover a song you play with your style.And I think it's pretty good.So just shut up and enjoy it..

I don't get why everybody hates this cover. I think its good. Yeah it may not sound like the original artest but I actually like this song. Just think of it as a song by metallica but with lyrics from the dire straits.(not sure if thts spelled right) now I can't say much about it tho cuz I haven't heard the original version yet. For once Metallica can't come EVEN CLOOOOOOOOSE to the original. They have 'not' captured other covers but never one as far as this. Hetfield does an admittedly bang up job with the clean guitar though, amazing.

I love Metallica and I also love Dire Straits, but honestly, the original is great and much better then this although Metallica had tried and did a good effort, but Mark is so much better at it.

Come on guys. Of course no one will sing it better than than original. But Metallica when was making that cover didn't have the aim to beat Knopfler I'm sure. It seems like a contribution to the great musician and singer. Hetfield sang it with his manner and acousic guitar was really nice. There is nothing to argue about.

I like both MK and Metallica, but the same way that no other band can produce the same feeling in Nohting Else Matters, there no voice and no style of playing that suits Brothers in Arms better than MK's. But by the way nice acoustic work from Kirk.

i'm a Metallica fan, they are one of the mos influential bands of all times, and almos all of their music is flawless, but... i have to say, this cover version, just suks. They could have done a much more better version, i'm sure of that, it's a shame...

It's massive to respect shown to Mark's body of work that one of the biggest selling bands of a totally different genre to his own have covered something he created.
