Elephants Dream is like "Huge Imagination/Thought". The older man believes the mind is a machine running like clock work, yet the younger man fails to see the beauty of the mind. He cannot understand how the older person feels. It is like the arguements of science and nature. The elder believes the mind is nothing more than a machine, yet the younger one does not see it as a machine it's just there a natural state of being empty and free based on emotion like the laughing in the door.
This is definatly not my type of thing. Some people commented that it had alot of meaning and that they could interprete this is many different ways. I can't .
I see what i see and thats it . All i saw in this short film are two very weird characters walking around in a very weird mechanical environment .
I can say that the people who made this are very talented artists but this is definatly not the kinda movie i would make if i had their talent.
@Krawll02 The film speaks to everyone differently at different points in their life. When I first saw it back in '07, I felt the same way. Watching it again, I percieve it in an entirely different, more metaphorical way.
If I were a rich or a gambling man, I'd wager a large sum on the same being true when I watch this later on in my life, and I will see the film through yet another perspective.
Look at how Emo's dressed; a straight jacket? And I think Proog's crazy too. Lets say there's an asylum they're both committed to, but Proog isn't exactly crazy. He can go to this place, this 'Machine', and bring Emo with him. I don't think he understands it much better than Emo does, except that its highly volatile and can be affected by human minds. As for what it is...all those wires, the telephone cords...some sort of realm representing human collective consciousness?
Proog has given in to fear and lets his fear keep him in submission to the machine. Emo sees that there is nothing there. He has no fear and wants to make his own way of life without conforming and submitting to the machine. When he starts doing this it turns Proogs world upside down.

I think Proog wants to show Emo his world, how he sees it. But Emo just refuses and cant see it. And the more Proog pushes Emo to see it, the closer Emo gets to snapping. When he finally does snap, Proogs world is controlled by Emo, who still fails to see it. I think Proog wanted to share his world and pass it on, but Emo was the wrong choice for it. Maybe I'm making no sense, but I can see it as that.
Like seriously?! I would love to hear what the creators have to say about the storyline, cause it didn't really made much sense. The old guy is crazy and sees beyond any normal person boundaries. And Emo, it's just an emo with no understanding of the guy whatsoever. Yea... abnormal people.
Well the images and computer development is good but the story ain t that good.. seems to me you had seen to many times The Matrix, there´s so much you can do with that.. ciao!

Proog is pressuring Emo to see the machine the same way he does, because if both people don't see it the same way then the whole thing goes hay wire like at the end of the video. Only one person can control the machine. Proog is afraid of what could happen if he loses this control this is why he is so domineering over Emo.

I consider this short film from blender foundation the best of their short film till now. Despite the characters are lacking of some subtitles moves (like in BBB) its story is one of the most spectacular I have never seen.

beautiful portrait of how a psychotic schizophrenic experiences his reality, and how he typically reacts to other people not believing him. Lots of cool gems in there, love the symbolism and constant hum of paranoia thats inherent in schizophrenia also. Animation could use some more work, but textures and character/environment design was great and interesting.
I think that this could have many different interpretations, depending on the viewer. I personally don't understand all of you people that commented saying that it made no sense. When I watch this movie I get the feeling of good an evil. The machine itself to me represents all good things but you always have to be cautious or you may stray. When Emo starts straying the machine falls apart and red pulsating tentacles appear and almost try to attack or distance emo from Prog leading him further astray.
The 'machine' reminds me of a representation of the human brain, I mean all those wires connecting and firing looked like nerves and synapses.
I think that the story is not of an old man trying to educate a young man about the 'dangers of the world' and 'temptations' etc because ultimately the danger to Emo was the old man himself!
I think, the point of this video is to show that people think, most of the time, that geniuses are nuts. When Proog says "why can't you see the beauty of this place?, the way it works?" I feel like when I point something out (I'm no saying I'm a genius, I'm just a geek) and noone else get it.

animation was good. expecially in the begining. on the walk way, i felt a strong absence of shadows, but it was all good. like others, i did not get the story.
I'm disappointed in the comments. The movie isn't that complex. It's just an abstract representation of a father trying to educate his son on the cruel machinery of life- why you should enjoy the little things, don't stray far from the accepted, and how - perhaps ironically - the beautiful things Emo wanted to imagine were all destroyed by man.
No real story, just a lot of randomness. Might be some hidden secret meaning that you will find after analyzing the vid for a week or two, but cant really be bothered..
Watch Emo...He reacts to nothing in the environment. Proog reacts to everything. 4:10, Proog enjoys the steps, but Emo just walks. 5:27 the elevator stops suddenly and Proog feels the effects, but Emo is unaltered. 5:57, Emo says he sees nothing. 6:23 Emo isn't affected by the sudden stop again. 7:49 Emo walks where the wall should be, but it conveniently moves enough. I think it's all in Proog's head and Emo just doesn't want to live in that imaginary world. I think Proog is nuts, not wise.

I don't get it. The people who made this have such a great fantasy and so many skills in making movies like this. Why can't you write a good story? I mean... this movie has no starting, it has no real ending (okey, this ending made it somehow nice), there is no strukture. The same counts for Sintel! Wth? Both look awesome but have no real story compared to Big Bunny Bug (awesome)...
He should be a child, not a man It would make him sound less weird and make the story more dynamic I dont understand the title doesn't seem to fit the plotline at all... the story makes no sense, considering we don't know where the characters come from, where they are, why they are there, why they are doing what they are doing, and what they are going to do It just seems a series of random scenes tied together by a weak dialogue and two characters (neither of which the audience can connect to)

Great MOVIE , but the animation is a bit sloppy and odd for some reason it doesn't flow well and distracts me from following their actions, too distracting if it was purposely done and just plain bad if it was just lack of animation skills

I think the image at the end was just showing that the old man was concocting the whole thing out of his imagination. Emo discovers that he too is able to use HIS OWN imagination to make things appear however he wants just like the old man did. The old man wanted Emo's help sustaining the illusion as he wanted, but Emo wouldn't cooperate. Emo wanted to go outside with others, outside the place of the old man's "safe" imagination/illusions.

Here's how I see this tonight. There's a father/son relationship here. The father is trying to impose his ways on his son as he takes his first steps in the dangerous world (the machine). He begins to drown all his own ideas and desires and tries too hard to mold Emo into himself. When he "kills" Emo at the end symbolizes the mentality of this type of father figure: if they can't have the son they wanted, they will them off and loose touch. This concept can be expanded to other relationships.

Then again it reminds me of a psychologe and his patient, because of the clothes of both characters and the behavior in some sequences.

I'm disappointed in the comments. The movie isn't that complex. It's just an abstract representation of a father trying to educate his son on the cruel machinery of life- why you should enjoy the little things, don't stray far from the accepted, and how - perhaps ironically - the beautiful things Emo wanted to imagine were all destroyed by man.

Watch Emo...He reacts to nothing in the environment. Proog reacts to everything. 4:10, Proog enjoys the steps, but Emo just walks. 5:27 the elevator stops suddenly and Proog feels the effects, but Emo is unaltered. 5:57, Emo says he sees nothing. 6:23 Emo isn't affected by the sudden stop again. 7:49 Emo walks where the wall should be, but it conveniently moves enough. I think it's all in Proog's head and Emo just doesn't want to live in that imaginary world. I think Proog is nuts, not wise.

@tstone2077 I can not realy say who is the wise one. but from my reaction does the movie anyhow be about how the paternal figure wants the "son" to follow in his footstep(which he is litterary making him do by running with him through the machinery and telling him of the danger of walking astray). Im also curious about the enviroment and how the name Emo sounds like Nero(the clothes are pretty similiar also). Could it be that the character is a parody of Nero.?

I don't get it. The people who made this have such a great fantasy and so many skills in making movies like this. Why can't you write a good story? I mean... this movie has no starting, it has no real ending (okey, this ending made it somehow nice), there is no strukture. The same counts for Sintel! Wth? Both look awesome but have no real story compared to Big Bunny Bug (awesome)...

He should be a child, not a man It would make him sound less weird and make the story more dynamic I dont understand the title doesn't seem to fit the plotline at all... the story makes no sense, considering we don't know where the characters come from, where they are, why they are there, why they are doing what they are doing, and what they are going to do It just seems a series of random scenes tied together by a weak dialogue and two characters (neither of which the audience can connect to)

Closed source fears the transformation the emotions from negotiations make him kill opensource and by that means kills the future of whole machine.

I think the image at the end was just showing that the old man was concocting the whole thing out of his imagination. Emo discovers that he too is able to use HIS OWN imagination to make things appear however he wants just like the old man did. The old man wanted Emo's help sustaining the illusion as he wanted, but Emo wouldn't cooperate. Emo wanted to go outside with others, outside the place of the old man's "safe" imagination/illusions.

Here's how I see this tonight. There's a father/son relationship here. The father is trying to impose his ways on his son as he takes his first steps in the dangerous world (the machine). He begins to drown all his own ideas and desires and tries too hard to mold Emo into himself. When he "kills" Emo at the end symbolizes the mentality of this type of father figure: if they can't have the son they wanted, they will them off and loose touch. This concept can be expanded to other relationships.
