I wonder why they didn't go with Cornwell's plot. I realize it starts with the British on the run, but it is less contrived than Wellington's buxom relatives randomly showing up.
I can't really blame these women. Life meant little to the army and they knew that. People got written off all the time and they must have known that. They were using the little bit of power they had to find their loved one. Fortunate man to be loved like this. This woman was Sharpe's equal. Wellington must think he has bigger problems but after he got into France, what reward would he have, other than medals? Most gotten by men he called scum. He should have helped these loving women.
I know what Baker rifles are, and I know that they weren't called Baker rifles until after the Napoleonic Wars, at this time they were only called Infantry Rifles
Sharpe is a fine combat officer, needs to be disciplined just a lil. I hate aristocratic useless officers, but sometimes as i have learned in life- you give respect.
@Mattthornz Yes. He sure didn't mourn for long did he? And other than after her death, he seems to forget about his daughter. I wonder how those people feed and kept a roof over her head. Any of you that have read the books, did Sharpe send money? I want to believe he would but his character changes so in some of these episodes but then this is tv. All for the glory of war and all that. Not written with women in mind.
His daughter I think he left behind to let the woman taking care of her raise her.
He's unable to take care of her (or even see her frequently) himself because his soldiering career will pretty much take him anywhere in the world Wellington tells him to go (he also gets paid shit, even as an officer), and he doesn't have anyone else to take care of her at this point, so he'd be a father who'd literally never see his child, one that is a very painful reminder of Teresa I imagine.
I think it very unlikely that people used to show affection like that then especially if she was a respectable lady and with her mother a few yards away, she even kissed him in the fields in front of her mother....but then he is Sharpe!
I love sharpe i can remember watching it on masterpiece theater when i was 5. he is not a coward just a broken hearted rouge who the women love... can you really blame them or him
Oh God, does he have to become involved with EVERY woman who crosses his path. I wish some ugly fat one would be in one of his adventures and we could see him passionately kissing her!!
4:30 Gt. Grma (b 1883) all situations warrant that one adjust their level of response to reflect that of their opponent.. works beautifully in all circles during war and peace and especially valuable in dealing with ones infants and children.
@kalaus88 Interesting for the time. They couldn't show ankles but it was Ok to show clevage. Must have been hard for the men to keep their eyes up. It's actually embarassing to me as a woman to see that the women had such low necklines. I wouldn't wear anything close to it. Impressive that whoever dressed them could cut the dress that low and not expose anything else.
@Songsmirth You're looking at at with a modern day perspective that looks down on a woman who removes her shirt in public but it's OK for a man. Attitudes change
In time of war, when every second might be your last, simple and sole pleasures should be taken when available. I know I've been in his shoes back in the early 90's and everyday ever since.

@stupidintellect90 No, you're right. The husbands and wives during this time called each other, "Mr." and "Mrs."
This just wouldn't have been done. You're right that this was built for a gallant tv character and Bean is so good at romancing the ladies. lol Songs
