Despite David's tone not really suiting the tune, I betcha the other 3 went something like : " Well Dave, since you were brought in as Syd's replacement, you should sing it".
Only Syd can sing this song. David Gilmour's voice doesn't suit it at all. I find that Syd has a childish tone in his voice that gives all his songs a very earnest feel, like if he totally believed in what he was singing. David sounds too self-conscious and his voice is too rough for this song. Maybe Rick could have sung it better.
I think Dave Gilmour would be the first to admit that Syd was the more creative - Syd was a natural, effortless genius comparable to Lennon McCartney and Mozart - so it's not a fair comparison because Dave was exceptionally gifted in other ways. But post Syd, Floyd revamped his ideas again and again. E.g.the Syd atmosphere is in Dark side of the Moon. Syd was obsessed with animals in his songs -so the new floyd called one of their albums 'Animals' and even had a giant flying pig to promote it.
@gainsbourg66 i think Syd was billions of times better suited to singing this song, than Dave and to me this song is very sci-fi like in billions of ways.
Saying that Syd's floyd was more imaginative than the Gilmour/waters period is like saying The piper is a better album than Dark side of the moon. Utter rubbish!
Don't get me wrong I like piper and Syd very much but i.m.h.o. tha later PF is much better!
@nickveekens i've always thought that post waters period is not as good as middle 70's, period. the versions of songs like shine on you crazy diamond or comfortably numb in concerts like the delicate sound of thunder or pulse are no more than shit to me.
Normally I'd be pissed to see someone have the balls to come up after Syd and take over as frontman, but I don't think anyone knew what they were in for with Gilmour. Easily one of the most brilliant musicians of his time, much like Syd himself.
The experience and evolution of Floyd as a band throughout the years (decades, really) is one of the most fascinating stories ever amongst rock lore. If a film/biopic is eventually made, I only hope they get the perfect director, writer and actors.
Hindsight is 20/20 and I don't think anybody can really pass judgement on what is going on in the minds of a very young, very new group trying to cope with a problem nobody really understood until much later (Syd's illness).
If there's anybody who has a copy of Syd doing this live, we could compare the two. Oh yeah, Syd never wanted to play these live... Gilmour does a great job on this.
I think it goes to say that Gilmour sounds MUCH happier singing this song here than in the French telly version! Such a lovely song, and his voice is really great, even in his old age. Hell with it, what's not to love about them?
Syd was gone by then, unfortunately. They did about five shows as a group of five, and I kind of doubt--as unfortunate as it is--that those got filmed.
Wow you need to find a life. "Fuck you find good music" because i said i like The Final Cut? Seriously, does that warrant "fuck me"? Calm yourself little lady.
How does what I said constitute the need for my life huh? And guess what, The Final Cut is the worst Floyd album, so I don't know what you're smoking pal.
the worst? well id like to back bol up id say the final cut is my second favourite album a saucerful of secrets being the first.
the final cut is food for your heart, and the only reason why somepeople might think it was lacking is because the rest of the band had no good ideas to contribute. listen to gilmours guitar, nothing FUCKING new there. And syd was always the band, he was always there, just not always physically.
Hey, hey, hey! I have to say that The Final Cut is generally dismissed as a crappy album because Waters had fired Wright and frankly, the tension sort of shows in the music. It's a nice album of course--I mean, it's Pink Floyd, people!--but there are certainly better Floyd albums out, as you yourself have stated. I, for one, just urge you to appreciate what they did, cos someday they won't be around... and we'll all be grasping at air, and realising how astounding EVERYTHING was!
No.................................................... So many opinions and this could be so many arguments. Piper is one of the greatest albums of all time but I agree it doesn't feel like a "Floyd album". However Syd Barrett's songs are so good they transcend any band. Also his voice at his peak destroys any other including Gilmour's. No fights please just enjoy PF.

It's so unfair that The Beatles will be 'immortal' in their glory, and THIS music, so advanced and complex still today, seems to be completely forgotten... In the media anyway. THAT was real magic! Wonder if without Syd, there would ever be progrock. Shine on.
Whoa! I just got goosebumps! David did a fine job! Not Syd obviously, but still did a very good job! He hits those awesome notes when singing 'tel-e-phone' like Barrett layered beneath on 'Piper'.
Actually, with the exception of Atom Heart Mother, I agree. Meddle was when they got their act together. Finally, after fuckin 2 years of missing syd!
I recently hadn't heard The Piper at the Gates of Dawn album...but all the post Syd Barret stuff. Man, I thought Pink Floyd couldn't get any better, but Syd Barrett created BY FAR the best Pink Floyd album. Syd is the man, and to see the attitudes of David Gilmour towards Syd and the way he talks about him makes me sad. He can't compare to Syd, and he's just been bitter (even until now) about having to fill those shoes. You never could.

First off, they never recorded it with Gilmour. It was only recorded one time...on syd-floyd album Piper. This is nothing more than a live version of the song WITH Gilmour right after the band kicked out Syd.
