  • @zouzoujedi This isn't fucking Syd - its Dave dude. They don't look or sound anything alike.

  • who is this david or syd?

  • Imagine that syd was not started with that shit/drugs it would be different world

  • """"""Syd barrett on vocals"""""" thank's

  • this song is sung by david very good, but is syd syd, is and was the soul of Pink Floyd say what they say.

  • Only Syd can sing this song. David Gilmour's voice doesn't suit it at all. I find that Syd has a childish tone in his voice that gives all his songs a very earnest feel, like if he totally believed in what he was singing. David sounds too self-conscious and his voice is too rough for this song. Maybe Rick could have sung it better.

  • I think Dave Gilmour would be the first to admit that Syd was the more creative - Syd was a natural, effortless genius comparable to Lennon McCartney and Mozart - so it's not a fair comparison because Dave was exceptionally gifted in other ways. But post Syd, Floyd revamped his ideas again and again. E.g.the Syd atmosphere is in Dark side of the Moon. Syd was obsessed with animals in his songs -so the new floyd called one of their albums 'Animals' and even had a giant flying pig to promote it.

  • @gainsbourg66 i think Syd was billions of times better suited to singing this song, than Dave and to me this song is very sci-fi like in billions of ways.

  • man this song is .... its just beautiful it reminds me those beautiful summer rainny days

  • @checout8 Dave can't do Syd for beans. They'd have been better off having Rick do it.

  • This sounds so wrong... I love Dave's voice, but it's too urm rough to sing Syd's stuff.

  • Saying that Syd's floyd was more imaginative than the Gilmour/waters period is like saying The piper is a better album than Dark side of the moon. Utter rubbish!

Don't get me wrong I like piper and Syd very much but i.m.h.o. tha later PF is much better!

  • @nickveekens i've always thought that post waters period is not as good as middle 70's, period. the versions of songs like shine on you crazy diamond or comfortably numb in concerts like the delicate sound of thunder or pulse are no more than shit to me.

  • Normally I'd be pissed to see someone have the balls to come up after Syd and take over as frontman, but I don't think anyone knew what they were in for with Gilmour. Easily one of the most brilliant musicians of his time, much like Syd himself.

The experience and evolution of Floyd as a band throughout the years (decades, really) is one of the most fascinating stories ever amongst rock lore. If a film/biopic is eventually made, I only hope they get the perfect director, writer and actors.

  • CHECK OUT MY COVER for this song!!!!

  • I always thought that Barrett was the one singing in this live performance. Are you sure its Gilmour?

  • @malachay Yes this is definitely Gilmour! Check out the big lips haha

  • This is a rare and precious post.

Hindsight is 20/20 and I don't think anybody can really pass judgement on what is going on in the minds of a very young, very new group trying to cope with a problem nobody really understood until much later (Syd's illness).

This is totally lovely. THANK YOU !

  • nobody will ever thank you enough for upping this, lets hope god will do so. i'll pray for you

  • It must have been so painful to David to sing this song. But he did it anyway and this is very courageous from him.

  • syd wanted to play these song live, just not in a large dance room with lots of ppl but rather a smaller venue with crazy blinking lights

  • Great Richard and Syd

  • lol wrong it's Gilmour - it took me a while to work out if it was Syd singing or not + it isn't.

  • damm how can you not recognize then fast, its so obious since the video starts that its not syd.

  • i don't like this performance

  • i do.

  • If there's anybody who has a copy of Syd doing this live, we could compare the two. Oh yeah, Syd never wanted to play these live... Gilmour does a great job on this.

  • Agreed! ;)

  • way better than the french live video.

  • Nice Syd impression Dave, you stepped in, sang his songs and copied his guitar style, Im sure Roger was very happy with this.

  • Interesting early live footage of the band, but sickening to see Gimour singing this none the less. Its Syds fucking song.

  • I'm a 'total Syd fan' (RIP) but I think Dave tried to sound like Syd to, kind of, pay Him a tribute. As Pink Floyd did it many times later.

  • does anyone know if there are any videos of Syd with Pink Floyd kicking around?

  • thats a fucking great performance. syd barretts song when he was well fucking hell always makes me choked to think about it what a fucking talent!

  • I think it goes to say that Gilmour sounds MUCH happier singing this song here than in the French telly version! Such a lovely song, and his voice is really great, even in his old age. Hell with it, what's not to love about them?

  • you do know this song is about stalkers

  • This is amazing, back in the day when Syd was the band not Roger.

  • But Dave is in this lineup?

  • Ya, Dave is singing. I don't hear or see Syd. Where is he?

  • Syd was gone by then, unfortunately. They did about five shows as a group of five, and I kind of doubt--as unfortunate as it is--that those got filmed.

  • Oh ya...i didn't know the date of the show so i couldn't figure out if he was in it or not.

  • Oh ya...i didn't know the date of the show so i couldn't figure out if he was in it or not.

  • The Final Cut was remarkable. Waters had an idea there and really hit a homerun with it. The Final Cut is in my top 5 Floyd albums.

  • Fuck you, find good music.

  • Wow you need to find a life. "Fuck you find good music" because i said i like The Final Cut? Seriously, does that warrant "fuck me"? Calm yourself little lady.

  • How does what I said constitute the need for my life huh? And guess what, The Final Cut is the worst Floyd album, so I don't know what you're smoking pal.

  • the worst? well id like to back bol up id say the final cut is my second favourite album a saucerful of secrets being the first.

the final cut is food for your heart, and the only reason why somepeople might think it was lacking is because the rest of the band had no good ideas to contribute. listen to gilmours guitar, nothing FUCKING new there. And syd was always the band, he was always there, just not always physically.

  • Hey, hey, hey! I have to say that The Final Cut is generally dismissed as a crappy album because Waters had fired Wright and frankly, the tension sort of shows in the music. It's a nice album of course--I mean, it's Pink Floyd, people!--but there are certainly better Floyd albums out, as you yourself have stated. I, for one, just urge you to appreciate what they did, cos someday they won't be around... and we'll all be grasping at air, and realising how astounding EVERYTHING was!

  • very rare!!! great videos!

  • Nice footage!.Where is it shot?....Must be 68´?

  • the syd years were far more better than the gilmour/waters years...syd was far more imaginative

  • I completely agree with you!

  • i second that emotion

  • @howlingjim You can't say that...

  • No.................................................... So many opinions and this could be so many arguments. Piper is one of the greatest albums of all time but I agree it doesn't feel like a "Floyd album". However Syd Barrett's songs are so good they transcend any band. Also his voice at his peak destroys any other including Gilmour's. No fights please just enjoy PF.

  • GRAN TEMA

  • It's so unfair that The Beatles will be 'immortal' in their glory, and THIS music, so advanced and complex still today, seems to be completely forgotten... In the media anyway. THAT was real magic! Wonder if without Syd, there would ever be progrock. Shine on.

  • Whoa! I just got goosebumps! David did a fine job! Not Syd obviously, but still did a very good job! He hits those awesome notes when singing 'tel-e-phone' like Barrett layered beneath on 'Piper'.

  • Actually, with the exception of Atom Heart Mother, I agree. Meddle was when they got their act together. Finally, after fuckin 2 years of missing syd!

  • I recently hadn't heard The Piper at the Gates of Dawn album...but all the post Syd Barret stuff. Man, I thought Pink Floyd couldn't get any better, but Syd Barrett created BY FAR the best Pink Floyd album. Syd is the man, and to see the attitudes of David Gilmour towards Syd and the way he talks about him makes me sad. He can't compare to Syd, and he's just been bitter (even until now) about having to fill those shoes. You never could.

  • totally agree. The Piper... is one of my favourite albums of all time, and in my opinion even Dark side of the moon doesn't compare to this masterpiece by Pink Floyd under Syd. He's without a doubt one of the greatest geniuses in the history of modern music.

  • I think Dave has been respectful towards Syd for the most part.

  • "Meddle was the last of their greatest stuff, indeed."

TutshillTornados, wtf are you taking about, all of Pink Floyds albums are all excellent, and besides wtf are you losers arguing about, its just a god damn Pink Floyd video, its not even the best Pink floyd song

  • You people can only dicuss and telling bloody BULLSHIT!!!

Just relax, enjoy the music and keep your stupid comments at home. If commenting, why not about the music ???

And to SJBRADEN : ...everything crap until MEDDLE ????

Go eat shit and hang yourself, or listen to fuckin' OASIS or similar Garbage!!!!

  • He's game and does a nice job but it does make you miss Syd. It must have been weird for Dave for sure.

  • Gilmour was already a friend before he entered the band. He was totally into the mood of the Piper album. No push beyond, I think they felt free later, only. And they were GIANTS.

  • Oh c'mon! You're not saying that Umma Gumma was some kind of "push beyond Syd's music"? They went totally different way, nobody (even prog rock, of which I'm a great fan) went "beyond Syd"!

  • Love this version. Much edgier than Syd, who was all eiderdown and British psychedlica. You can hear the band moving to Umma Gumma and beyond.

  • this song is crrrrrraaaazzy. acid trip lol

  • This is one of my favorite songs but its weird to hear gilmour sing it...

  • Quality, thats Gilmour singing Flaming---- WOWNESS!!!

  • This was performed on February 20th 1968, and later included on a French TV program. If you know your dates, this was briefly after Syd left the band in January, 6 months after Piper, and a few months before a Saucerful of Secrets. When Syd left, this was the time when Gilmour was [trying to be] learning his guitar style and songs. I do own this clip, but with higher brightness and contrast, and of course it is Dave! (With shorter hair of course, look at other pics of him around this time)

  • I have this clip on an old tape, it is most definitely Gilmour. I don't know how anyone could mistake the two.

  • PLease stop this silliness! that is the 2nd time i have read that this is Gilmour. Listen to "streaming through the starlit sky-yyy-yyy...pure Barrett genius. Enjoy

  • You are a dumb ass. That is Gilmour singing. After Syd was kicked out, what was the band suppose to do? They had no songs other than Syd's songs, so they went about singing everything from Piper and Saucerful until they wrote their own stuff (which was pertty much garbage until Meddle)

  • crap until Meddle? are you on crack? UmmaGumma is absolutely incredible

  • "pretty much garbage until Meddle"?!

You gotta be kiddin'! The best of Pink Floyd was when Syd was in the band, for sure. But if you count only the since he was already out, the earlier works far the best the same way! A Saucerful of Secrets, UmmaGumma, Atom Heart Mother, I'd say Meddle was the last of their greatest stuff, indeed.

Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals were good too, but not like the first ones. The rest was nothing special, I think.

  • You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Piper is still one of the greatest albums in rock history, and can definately compete with Floyd's post-Barrett masterpiece The Dark Side of the Moon.

  • This is awesome. It's the only recording I've ever heard of Gilmour singing flaming. Before this, I thought they only recorded it with Barrett.

  • First off, they never recorded it with Gilmour. It was only recorded one time...on syd-floyd album Piper. This is nothing more than a live version of the song WITH Gilmour right after the band kicked out Syd.

  • It is a recording, though. After all, how did the video come to be if it wasn't recorded?

I was commenting that I had never even heard a performance with Dave singing Flaming. I like it, nonetheless.
