@ElixirOfKnowledge Well Shaolin monks learn Kung fu for 6 hours a day and also 6 hours of zen buddism. To be a shaolin martial monk (disciple) you need to have both kung fu skills and full buddist devotion. So I think you can be a shaolin monk without buddism but wont be able to become an official diciple. :)

Shaolin Monks generally portray a simple life. At a very young age, they start their day with strenuous exercises to get the strength, agility and flexibility where they are now. It's not just kung fu/martial arts they practice, but the discipline as well (meditation and buddism). It's a second way of life they're living and to think about how they live a simple life (when not travelling or performing) is pretty amazing. They deserve more respect and acknowledgement than they are getting now.

demonstrations are meant to be showy for more dramatic effect and excitment.

dont judge something by a performance. because you will probably be proved wrong later

shaolin monks dont kill unless they absolutely have too. the dont like killing, so why would they make an art that is only to kill? they wouldnt, they do have things that CAN kill but if you got into a fight with one of them they wouldnt use it. they would only ummm...how should i say this....knock you out? does that work? whatever you know what i mean.

Shaolin Kung Fu is the animals put into human martial arts. Shaolin himself walked to the top of a mountain everyday to meditate, one day he saw a Grasshopper, Crane, Snake, Cat (Tiger), and I forget the last one. *Someone please help* He used in martial arts and that's how Shaolin became. (Not accurate because I haven't been to Shaolin since I was 5)

Not really, Wushu is the Mandarin name for Chinese martial arts and encorporates hundreds of styles both modern and traditional, Kung Fu is the cantonese word for practise or hard work, it encorporates a small number of martial arts styles frm Canton.

For those of you that thinks Shaolin is merely a myth or tourist attraction you need to rethink again. It is possible for foreigners to study shaolin wushu. shaolin has become a tourist attraction since the last years and the monks use a marketing strategy which allows them to make money with their martial art. u just need to fly to china and take a picture of a shaoln monk with u and u'll find someone who shows u kung fu very fast. this stuff is modern wushu and the quality is not that good, but it's a good start. -better u visit a kung fu school in your town and start practicing there...

Foreigners are indeed allowed to study kungfu with the monks. You dont have to be buddhist. There are different types of shaolin monks there are the martial monks and the spiritual monks. Theres a book entitled "American Shaolin", 18yr old american went to the temple and studied for years with them. An official shaolin temple is being established in new york city by a disciple of the Abbot of shaolin.

But they will let anyone to join them as people of any age can learn something, its not all bout kung fu !

Hopefully you all realize that these are not authentic Shaolin monks and what they are performing is just modern chinese wushu(non-practical martial arts and essentially gymnastics with punches and kicks). Although one might see these videos as amusing, a authentic student of Shaolin would not perform any of these activities and especially would not show them to the public. The Shaolin do not believe in performing for the public for many reasons.

I agree with you my friend. From many years i have been practicing Authentic Shaolin kungfu. I won many fight competition nationally and internationally. Never had I flown like this. Find a real expert in Chen style taichi and fight him. You will know how useless these flashy moves can be.

You're an idiot. The show 'Wheel Of Life' was performed by real shaolin monks who practice daily in the Shaolin Temple. They study shaolin gongfu, not wushu, and there's no secrecy about their techniques. They demonstate and teach it around the globe.
