i agree high prices will curb demand. However a market cannot exist without growth. Growth cannot exist without an increase in supply of energy every year. It is not about running out. It is about reaching our maximum extraction rate, which many believe will be 1,000 barrels per second. After that, global oil production will be in terminal decline. China will double there demand for oil in 10 years, then double it again in 7. In less then 2 decades they will need 200% more oil.

peak oil doomsday-ism is a scam people! remember the oil crisis of the 70's! there was no actual shortage, it was a minor shift in oil resource control hyped into a crisis by the oil companies to justify raising the price and overthrow usa price control measures. they bilked the public out of billions with this manufactured "energy crisis." do your homework and you'll find that non-conventional oil can be produced for $30-50 a barrell, and there's enough in the USA alone to last 100's of years.

the US peaked in domestic production in 1970. We peaked in discovery in 1963, globally. Since then we have been using 9 barrels for every one discivered. Harvesting Unconventional sources release 142% more CO2 then conventional sources. Not to mention these sources utilize massive quanities of natural gas, whcih has also peaked in North America. Denial is not going to help the situtaion. Our government had also released to very importatn reports stating the risks associated with a global peak.

you arnt going to grow China's econony at 10%/per year and the rest of the world's at 4% a year on unconventional reserves. It is not about reserves, its about production, producing 1,000 barrels a second this decade, then producing 1,500/second next decade, its an above ground issue.

growth isn't my point, i don't care if we are able to meet the demand or not, even though i believe unconventional sources will, just at a higher price than people want (meaning slower growth than people want.) my point is that we will not have a doomsday scenario on our hands. maybe we'll all have to live with one car instead of two, but we'll make it. my thinking is there will be economic downturn before the alternatives come online, but once they're online we'll be fine.

survival vs. mass die-offs has nothing to do with our ability to grow, it has to do with whether or not there's enough food, water, shelter, etc., i.e. basic needs. that stuff is based on real things, like the ability to produce food for enough people, not our ability to trade with china so people can have cheap tv's. we may have to start biking to and fro in a downturn economy due to energy restructuring, but there won't be mass starvations, there's lots of ways around that. that's my point.

For example.. I just went to the local Auto show yesterday here in Indy. The big focus was on hybrid vehicles... as gas price increases then we will get more dependant on electricity.. To think that switching to an alternative energy "if needed" to counter the supply/demand problem with oil is very wishful thinking. Switching to an alternative energy source requires foresight, planning and investment *many* years before oil supplies start to dwindle in order to ensure a smooth transition. And I don't see those steps being taken. Do you?

The most important point you are missing here is just how dependent all the developed countries have become on oil for food supplies. Without it, modern agriculture as we know it is not possible. Famine ensues.

The auto companies can "tool-up" an electric car in 2-4 years... demand must occur... demand will occur once you wait in line for gas or cannot afford to drive where you want. There will alway be enought fuel for John Deere and freight.

Thanks, thats a good link, lots of good information there. Basically they should have more train networks, footpaths and cycle lanes. They should rewrite the highway code to give bicycles and pedestrians priority on our roads. They should even make towns and cities car free zones and tax cars off the roads. Then the streets would be a lot safer as well. Also people would be a lot healthier.

World consumption RATE is increasing exponentially...so Canada's known reserves depends upon what rate is used to calculate its lifetime...and then, the question is, at what cost to extract and refine? As consumption increases and prices increase, 100 years, a little more than one human lifetime is does not provide any hope with regards to world economy or in other words, the way things are as we know it with cheap energy. Things are going to change drastically.

Lets assume thats true. However you must factor in projected demand growth. We use approx 972/barrels per second currently. Demand is expected to grow to a staggering 1,800 barrels/second by 2030. It should be remembered that some analysts fail to consider probable extraction rates in their calculations, relying only upon known recoverable reserves. Furthermore, global oil discoveries peaked 4 decades ago. We are now discovering 1 barrel for every 5 barrels consumed.

yes, you are right, but the problem is in america, which is the biggest consumer, compare Russia consumption against USA. Also there are other implications, for example Russian say that the weel do not deplete, simple the oil pipe "get dirty" and it seems to be depleted but if the pipe is cleaned then you can start pump again. This happen in new mexico oil field, where after depleted the reserve start pump again. This thing goes to Abiotic oil theory.
