actually, advice from a vet, you should never buy a dog from a pet shop. Breeders are the way to go - registered breeders as you can see the scoring of your dog, trace diseases, temperament, and family lineage which is crucial for your pup. I see so many dogs from pet shops which end up with resp disease. Especially a lab puppy - the worst you can do is buy it from a pet shop. I really hope your dog's scoring and lineage was studied carefully. All the best!

and say your puppy has an illness or genetic defect, proper breeders take the time to help you treat it or take the puppy back however pet stores do not do so. Pet stores encourage puppy mills/farms which don't pay attention to the puppies health but rather the quantity produced. I really hope that in future cases you do not buy from a pet shop but a registered breeder. Wish you read a bit more about your breed.

of course there are puppy mills in Australia from small to big, I'd guess most of which are legal. The fact is that no respectable breeder any where in the world sells their puppies to shops to be sold on that way. Apart from not doing the right health tests on the sires and dams, the main problem with these mills is that the puppies don't get enough human contact. It's hit and miss as to whether they grow up with behavioral problems as a result.

@PittiesLuver not to get too philosophical, but a large contributor to abandonded dogs is they are half breeds that noone values. If you adopt dogs, you have more half breeds in circulation, and you breed more dogs that are likely to need to be adopted.... If someone goes purebred pedigree and has to pay 1500 dollars for a dog, they're far less likely to be abandoned. It's a serious investment for serious dog people.

If I had to choose bewtween adopting and buying, I would definitely adopt one. You can not put a price tag on a animal. As pure breds have the right to reproduce, mixed have too. I am a serious dog owner, with a beautiful adopted dog.

@benanaman By not purchasing a dog from a pet shop and thereby a breeder you aren't putting money into the breeder's hands and hopefully they will eventually stop breeding dogs. There are countless dogs and cats that are abused and abandoned by their owners who are put to death in animal shelters, instead of buying a commercially breed pet save an animal and tell the breeders to stop breeding unnecessary animals. You might not get the exact dog you want, but you will be saving a life.

@monstersVSjesus honestly, I used to have a husky.. Very smart.. but definitely not a family dog. They are still part wolf! They have a wild streak in them which makes them agressive and a little random. You really need to know what youre doing if you get a husky, they are prone to escaping the yard, and attacking other dogs.... or small kids... so be careful and study before you get one. Plus.. they chew like a chainsaw.
