  • Nice sequence sound ;)

  • I listened to your album on your website, and although I like that a lot, I prefer this much more... Are you planning an album with these kind of church/space music perhaps/hopefully??

  • @antoninprochazka Many thanks for your comments. I am indeed planning such an album!

  • Excellent playing! I love it

  • After many years of searching i found a Jupiter 4 in junk shop for £50, imagine my surprize when i found a Willy Wonka golden ticket under one of the keys!

  • i love your demos , very creative and they show some of the character of the synth.

I personally love real analogue synths as i cant feel the same way when i use software emulations.I just find that a lesser experience and less fun ? so these synths are worth the money as they give me more of a thrill ? is that hype ? i think not - its how i feel and why so many people love analogue synths in particular - they are REAL

There is a magic to these old synths that software will never replicated

  • sowas von schmatzend fett. any chance to get this out of my poly 61? ...

  • nice!

  • A friend of mine who doesn't play music owns a Jupiter 4, I have begged him over and over again to sell it to me for a fair amount of money, but he wont!!!

In great shape, needs a tuning and the memory fixed, but that's it... Toobad :(

  • Sniperdot, don't get obsessed by it, i think you would be underwhelmed if you actually got it. As great as these are I think 50% of it is hype and nostalgia, you can easily achieve convincing analogue with vsti's and they are a lot cheaper and more reliable! This kit is fine if you are wealthy but for the rest of us just stick to making music.

  • @maccagrabme Wouldn't a new computer, speakers, keyboard to play and software would be just as expensive as a synth?

  • I am totally dancing the robot.

  • that synth sounds so yummy didnt vince use that:?

  • Awesome !!!! I can imagine a loud 4/4 drum track in the back ground...that would make for some good EMB listening.Cheers

  • Is this an analoguemachine?

  • Indeed it is! It was Roland's first polyphonic analog synthesizer. It does, however, contain some digital circuitry, for storing patches, assigning voices, etc., but the oscillators and filters are 100% analog. Roland called this combination "Compuphonic" !! Totally 70's !!

  • @djthym

    Yes. Analog.

  • Comment removed

  • Reminds me of Reproduction and Travelogue ;o)

  • omg!!! I wish i could play an analog one... Well, I don´t know if you program a sequence and then play this in each note according to its tune... I have a digital one. There´s a kind of arppegiator , but you have to create the sequence... but I see myself limited about effects... I mean.. I can´t chance the time of delay.. I have to use exactly how it is in the key´s memory. The things only changes when I connect the key to a PC... Cheers!!! Oh, my.. I wrote a lot!! =D

  • ooooh analog....I miss you

  • amazing! you're convincing me of getting a DMM!

  • JP4! One of the best ever.

    :)

  • damn that sounds nice

  • Nice!

  • its great clarck...

    love it.

I will let liz slatton know i found you here..

  • Great!

Is arpeggiator playing in random mode?

  • This would be great to use to bring back some 80's sci-fi classic. And why not?

  • Wonderful!

Are you doing ALL THIS with memory man and jp-4 ONLY?

  • Yep. The arpeggiator is doing most of the work, though, I have to say ;)

  • Cool, really! And this delicate and sweet sound is coming straight from Jp-4 or is "touched" by memory man?

  • Yes, the sound is all coming from just the JP-4, but the memory man delay is still a key factor in the over all sound of the track.

  • the memory man gets a sort of equalize to the over all sound, right?

  • The Memory Man does equalize (in this case, filter out) some of the high frequencies -- especially after each repetition of the delay. But such is the nature of analog delay.

  • Sounds like a muse song, nice progression!

  • Hey, thanks for the heads up on the band Muse. I wasn't familiar with their stuff (so much music... so little time...). What a great band! Very inspiring, indeed!

  • To listen is to love. This is music. And I have melted.

  • maison, do you feel the memory man is a 'tone sucker'?

i'm looking for a good delay and also a loop station...i was planning on purchasing them separately, until i found out about this the memory man...which, honestly, sounds too good to be true

  • Well, to be honest, it IS a bit of a 'tone sucker' as you say... but for me it's worth the high frequency trade-off for the fabulous character this box produces. In the studio just today, feeling a bit lazy to dial-in settings on the Memory Man, I opted for a high-end analog modeling delay plugin instead... but within a few minutes, I was hooking up the Memory Man and back to dialing in settings by hand! In short, it IS indeed too good to be true. Cheers.

  • my heart is broken..love

  • Can u please do some more tracks !

    They're like fucking amazing !

  • if this was played in a church i'd have a reason to go there...

  • No shit!

  • nice, has something of classic music..

  • wow, really enjoyed this tune. did it just come out of your mind? or what did you play here?! great job! thanx

  • OW SHIT!!!! this sound is ULTRA INCREDIBLE. (for real)

  • wow, that was awesome :D

  • This kind of techno shit makes me wanna dance with a strobe light on, and put my fingers inside of strange women...

  • @Kimbo420 Women don't like being groped by perverts. It's called assault. Remember "Whatever we wear, wherever we go, Yes means yes and no means NO!"

  • That is beautiful. I couldn't dream of doing that with my P08!

  • It's funny you should say that because just the other day I was speaking to an organist friend of mine suggesting he persuade his church to replace their pipe organ with a Jupiter-4. I think a Bach Chorale with a slow LFO filter sweep would be quite inspiring on a Sunday morning, don't you think?

  • pipe organ?

  • I couldn't say. We'd have to give it a try for sure! :D

  • @maisonvague Have you seen the ARP Quadra video, someone else replies that his preacher played one in church.

  • Haven't seen the video yet... but I'd LOVE to see a preacher playing an ARP Quadra in church! Haha. BTW, it looks like the original poster deleted his/her post. Oh well....

  • I think a polymoog would be good in Faure's Requiem!

  • Oh, yes! That would sound glorious!

  • i love it! thx

  • This is a professional you-tube demo of the 'now' recognised as cool 'jp4' thankyou! - watch ebay today and find them rocketing through the roof!!!!

  • Glory Be!

  • ORGASMIIIIIC!

  • suuuuuuuuuuperb Donniem

  • what kind of synthy is this?????

  • It's a Roland Jupiter 4...the first Jupiter synth. This is what the BBC used a lot...especially the Dr. Who theme during the wonderful Tom Baker years.

  • cool cool cool

  • My God,LET'S GIVE THIS SYNTH THE RECOGNITION IT DESERVES. Never realised JP4's sounded so dense, rich, and organic-only one VCO as well, though with a sub-oscillator too. Makes my JUNO 6O sound paper thin!

  • Very nice! Its a great demonstration of how the arpeggiator can be "played". It was pretty common in the 80's. Nice to see a demo of it.

  • Excelent

  • This is a great demo. Thanks for sharing it!

  • how did u adjust your settings for that sound i wanna try that with my jupiter 4 or what patch

  • Sorry, I've already forgotten! LOL. I'm so lazy about writing down my patches. Terrible habit. One good thing about the Jupiter-4's limited patch memory is that it forces you to continually be creative.

  • oh

    wow

    so

    cool!!!

  • were would you be able to buy one now, i want this synth, vintage top of the line

  • Well, I got mine off eBay, though I generally wouldn't recommend buying vintage synths this way, given the risk factor. I got lucky with mine. I honestly think the best way to buy vintage gear is the old fashioned way: that is, via small adverts in magazines, synth sites, local newspapers, etc. Sadly eBay has ruined the market for vintage gear with all the bidding wars, hype, etc. Fortunately however, the Jupiter-4 is not nearly as coveted as either the Jupiter-6 or Jupiter-8. Good luck!

  • How much should you pay for one? I've found one on ebay, £833 already. Are old synths too fragile to post? I can't find many in Norfolk.

  • In the two years since I wrote that the prices for Jupiter-4's have gone through the roof! £833 would be a bargain at this point! They are a bit fragile, yes, so I would try to avoid shipping... but sometimes it's unavoidable. Just make certain it is well packed ; )

  • It ended at over £1,000 and the winner bid in the last 6 seconds. Everything is more than the prices in the book. I've read warnings about buying without looking and listening, difficult on ebay. I don't want to spend a lot on one which breaks and can't be mended. Is it safer to go to a shop where they check it over? I only have room for one, hard to tell without trying it.

  • Laura

The going rate for a J4 in good condition is around £1200 mate.

Whatever you book says its far easier to just do a completed listings search on ebay and check real world prices.

Anything in life is worth what someone will pay. J4s ofter go for £1100-1200

    Hope this helps

  • The book is "Analog Synthesizers" by Mark Jenkins. Everything is more than his pricelist! He says some are easier to mend than others but doesn't say which. Are some more robust and better made than others?

  • @kolakube123.. I got my Jupiter-4 for equivalent to $600 US, in nearly mint condition, with original chrome musicsheet stand hooked into the back, and original hard case included.. The inside was also checked and overhauled so it works perfectly.. I guess it was a good deal.

  • @haikousei

There always good. Thanks for feeling the need to brag about it and tell us all.

  • @Laura041974.. You can get it cheaper than that.. I recently got a nearly mint condition Jupiter-4 with its original music sheet stand & original hard case included, everything working perfectly, for equivalent to about $600 US.

  • @haikousei You're really lucky. Did you have to bid for it or reply to an ad? Where do you live? I can't find much. Gumtree and Craigslist have some but Sound on Sound is best. In Cash Converters in Norwich, they just stare blankly when I start asking!

  • @Laura041974. No bid. I just went to a regular used goods store and bought it. It was in nearly mint condition. Even wood sides had no scratches at all. I didn't expect it. I live near Roland Headquarters so there is a higher percent of people with old Roland synths in excellent condition, but most people want to keep theirs.

  • NICE!

  • this sounds nicer than any va i have heard...

  • wow! what a sound... beautiful..... thanks for sharing!

  • i have a quick question tho are you using your delay like you did with your other jp4 video??

  • yes. the tempo of the delay is roughly set to the tempo of the arpeggiator. it's inexact -- but for me that adds to the character of the effect in this case. when working with virtual synths and delay effects i often opt not to "sync to MIDI" preferring to adjust the delay time by hand for similar reasons.

  • ah i see. thanks! I just posted 3 vids of me playin with my fantom x7 that i picked up about a week ago or so. let me know what you think of them :)

  • im officially on the hunt for a jp4. along with a jp8, and oberheim's obx and ob8 haha

  • That synth was also used by keyboardist Nick Rhodes in Duran Duran's "Rio" title track (the random arpeggiation was done on the Roland Jupiter 4).

  • Add-on to comment:

I wonder if you can recreate and post a video of the random arpeggiation of "Rio" using the random mode on the Jupiter 4's arpeggiator with a C minor chord.

  • I had two of these, both broken and i managed to make 1 working from the two. I'll never forget it powering up. Goosepimples!

  • Roland's fattest machine !

  • now sync it to midi ;-)

  • man nice synth

  • this was the synth used in M's 1979 hit pop musik

  • its like a futuristic piano sonata

  • Very nice arpeggio's! And I had forgotten how good a JP4 can sound.

  • very nice! sounds a bit like ray lynch to me. looking forward to your next performance.

  • awesome!

  • Très beau, merci !

    Very beautiful, thanks !

  • Ah thanx ! The Jupiter 4 has a awesome sound love this machine will definetely my next synth ! Try to get one, but the price nowadays is totally overpriced. But i really want one !! Love this sound ! please make some more !!

  • what is this box on the jupiter 4 ?

  • that's the electro-harmonix memory man delay
