Amphetamines thats my guess given the time of the fight thats the most probable thing besides cocaine that he Lewis could give Pryor and have him bouncing around like that.
I forgot to mention that Frankie Randall once tested positive for steroids after he beat Argentinian Coggi for the title, but I know he was not on steroids when he fought Chavez, the better man won on that night.
These were 2 of the greatest fighters of there era at there weight division, i would have loved to have seen pryor fight and kick leonard all around the ring and showed the world what a coward he really was ... RIP Alexis you were a true Gent and an astounding fighter - Pryor had the heart of a lion
In 1982 fights were still for 15 rounds. so the fight could not be scheduled for 12. And the commentor is wrong that pryor need it a ko. He was ahead in 2 of the 3 oficials card by 3 points and arguello was ahead by 2 points in one card
Every time I see this fight, it gives me the chills, these two fighters were monsters! I remember when I was a kid watching this fight, I just couldn't pick one, they both were kings on their own right. Arguello was and will ever be, my favorite fighter, RIP Mr. Arguello you were a true hero.
@pirata450 Yeah right! Whitaker kicked Chavez' ass when Julio was in his prime! Chavez built a career fighting bums and the moment he stepped up in opposition, got his ass handed to him!
@josemezatorrez Meldric Taylor never went on to do ANYTHING other than get destroyed by Terry Norris and he beat Chavez, you can thank Richard Steel for that loss! Comacho was way past his prime when he fought Chavez. Juan who? How about Pernell Whitaker, Franky Randall, DeLaHoya and Kostya Tszyu? Chavez flat out QUIT against Oscar and then denied it, even though it was caught on tape. None the less, he was ten times the fighter his kid will ever be!
@j Taylor did nothing after Chavez because he got brain damage from the severe beating that he took from JCC.Camacho was born in 1962 and Julio Cesar Chavez was born in 1962,yeah past his prime Jjaaa.Whittaker trainer Lou Duva admitted in a Ring Magazine interview that they ducked JCC in the late 80's because Chaves was too good for sweet pea and that he was still not ready. They waited till JCC slowed down and had over 86 fights, past his 30 years( Past Prime)and then Pernell fought JCC.
@justentime77 Those fights that you say that he quit were when Chavez was over the hill.It does not tarnish his career because many greats have bad days, just like Duran or Arguello, but they are still in the Hall of Fame. And why the fuck do you bring up Kostya Tszyu? You are stupid for bringing him up,did you forget when tszyu quit like a little coward versus Ricky"Fatton"Hatton JJaaaaa
@justentime77 Chavez had a busted up face and blood pouring into his eyes and Tszue did not have a scratch on him and yet he bent over and exposed his vagina to Fatton, hence the coward tag.
@justentime77 Who the fuck cares what you think of JCC.I care a million more times what a legendary trainer like Angelo Dundee thinks of JCC.Dundee said this about him, "JCC is the toughest fighter that he had ever seen in the ring, bar none". Have a nice day stranger.
@123bigr Why would Angelo lie,was he his promoter or something? Chavez style of fighting was toe to toe,Ali implementes the Sting like a Bee Float Like a Butterfly style, how cute....I know Ali was a bad ass dude but so was Chavez. I never saw Chavez illegally hold his opponents from the back of the neck to survive and avoid geatting hit,so dont get mad at me for what Angelo Dundee said,go talk to Dundee.
@josemezatorrez I did not say Angelo lied, I never heard him make such a comment. Standing toe to toe does not define "tough". Fighting blind is tough. Fighting the hardest punchers ever is tough. Chavez was a rough fella, but he did not face any Listons, Foremans, or Fraziers. Frankie Randall whooped Chavez "toe to toe". Chavez won a bogus rematch on a headbutt that was caused by both fighters. BTW, Chavez has a great forearm across the back of the neck technique to hold fighters down
Are you bragging about Randall? Chavez was going into his 90'th fight and Randall was going into his 47th fight, yes he lost to him and got dropped by Randall for the first time in his carrer and what did Chavez do? He got back up and fought till the final bell. No human being can stay young forever and eventually all the great Legends of boxing lose,no shame in that but look at his fights and you have to respect his game because he always came to fight and he gave them all a shot at the title.
@123bigr Even Frankie Randall was not invincible because he got KO the f-out by a Mexican from Durango before he even faced Chavez. How was Chavez going to fight Frazier.Foreman or Liston? Chavez was a lightweight not a heavyweight, but I am sure if he was from that era and a heavyweight he would have fought them too because Chavez did not dodge anybody,he would fight all the best of his generation unlike some of the current boxers that are scared to fight each other.
@josemezatorrez I did not say Chavez was a heavyweight, I was saying he did not face fighters of that calliber in his class. Randall whooped his ass though, I do not care about who beat him before. He put Chavez on his ass. End of story. BTW, Sweet pea boxed circles around Chavez, but he was given another gift.
@123bigr Then dont bring up the heavyweights becasue that is a dumb comparison, stick to Chavez generation and dont mention Joe Louis or Hercules.Whiitaker did not want to fight,he wanted to hit and run,hit and hug while Chevez chased him around,if you call that a great victory then you dont know shit about real boxing. The only time Pea hurt Chavez was when he punched him on his dick. Plus Whittaker was spanked by Mexicano Jose Luis Ramirez and took away his perfect record.
@josemezatorrez U R more ignorant than I thought. There was no comparison to heavyweights. I was saying who was the foreman of his class or the liston of his class or the frazier of his class. I am speaking of who Chavez competed against. Who are the tough guys he beat that makes him tougher than Ali?
@ 123b Hey Dumbo, don't compare the fat ass heavyweight fighters to the superb condition smaller fighters, don't make your lack of knowledge be so obvious.Fat Foreman got tired in 7 rounds.Chavez style of fighting which was toe to toe not this "Float like a butterfly "stuff was very risky and deadly.Smaller fighters land twice as many punches to head and body than the heavyweights, just compare how many more fatalities there are in smaller weight classes,or just ask Meldrick Taylor how rough it is.
Also they are speaking that Pryor's camp wanted a 12th round fight. The fights were still 15th rounds .WBC OR WBA. Thet could not fixed that. Just after the dook koo kim fight with ray mancini the wbc chanced to 12th rounds the wba had still 15th round fights for a while.

@MIZIKE69 Not it is not.. Pacquiao is nowhere near as aggressive as Pryor was. Pacquiao at least tries to slip some punches, Pryor didn't give a damn if you'd hit him.
"give me the other bottle. not that one. the one I mixed"
I can never look past that. Pryor was an animal in the ring with the heart of a lion but who knows how many times there were or were not loaded gloves, stimulants or whatever else going on. So was he always as good in his prime as was the evidence from his fights, or was there other stuff going on in the background that we didn't know about that aided this guy's performances? In my eyes this guy will always be tainted.
Style wize Pryor would be a easy fight for SRL. That charging no defense style would get him knocked out. Also Pryor never beat a Welterweight.
He was doing all that charging with no defense against 135 and 140 pounders. Alexis Arguello was 135 and had moved up. If a 147 pounder hit Pryor with those same punches he would have gotten knocked out,.
Also Pryor took illegal drugs for energy. Dude was on the stuff
@bscottdp NO LO DUDE PRYOR EN LOS COMBATES DIFICILES PELEABA DROGADO...LA MIRADA LO DICE TODO...GRAN BOXEADOR PERO TRAMPOSO...ASI LE GANO A ARGUELLO EN LA PRIMERA PELEA
Ray didnt fight Pryor because by the time Pryor established himself Ray was retired. Why would Ray fight Pryor in 1981 when the entire world wanted Leonard vs Hearns? Duck Hearns to fight a 140 pounder? Ray would never be forgiven for doing that. Ray retired November 1982.
Pryor beat Hearns when Tommy was 16 years old. Means nothing. Bottom line is Tommy was the guy everyone wanted Ray to fight. Not Pryor. By the time Pryor beat Arguello SRL was retired with the detached retina.
Pryor vs Leonard would look like how Ray knocked out Andy Price. That charging crap aint gonna work against SRL.
Duran applied pressure but with defense. He slipped shots as he was coming in. Not HEEEEEEEEEEY Ray i will take all your shots as i come in....LOL....Pryor would get knocked out using that style he used vs Arguello who was naturally 135 pounds. Pryor was exciting but he was unproved at 147 pounds.
@bscottdp Why did Ray not fight him then? Because Pryor used to give him hell in their sparring sessions in the amateurs and pros. Pryor beat Leonard's main adversary in the pros (Hearns) as an amateur, and he was the champ at 140 and undefeated. Pryor just wasn't a draw. If Pryor had drawing power, and would've helped Ray make a lot of dough, like Hearns/Duran/Hagler, he would've fought him. Arum would've made sure of that.
The obsession with Pryor is funny as hell. Dude got away with charging with NO DEFENSE because he was fighting `135 pounders. Arguello was naturally 135 and moved up to challenge Pryor. Against natural 147 pounders Pryor charging with his face WIDE OPEN...He would get countered and knocked out.
Arguello countered Pryor a lot in there fights. Only he was 135 naturally. Ray Leonard would do the same but here is the difference. Bigger, more speed, more snap and landing more shots
scottish boxer jim watt beat howard davis for watts wbc lightweight title in 1980/1981
i was 4 or 5 on my dads shoulders in rangers football stadium glasgow scotland ,55,000 crowd watt won an easy decision and watt was 6 years olser and davis wore pink shorts.
when the best fought the best not waited until the other guy was 40, or asked a guy to move up 17 pounds or accuse him of using steroids back when boxing was real.
Leonard is punk bitch who ducked great fighters when he could took the fights (Pryor and Hagler for most of His Reign) But Aaron Pryor deserves way more respect then given but despite Arguello's toughness Pryor Taxed that ass TWICE! Nuff Said
Aaron is the greatest boxer of all time. Say he cheated all you want, thats sp ignorant. Watch this man fight. Absolutely tore peoples heads off. Was an animal.
@kingjojo14 hey fucked head........panama lewis was his trainer, God knows how many times more he cheated and did not get caught! pryor only beat arguello fairly in the second fight.
Nope! I hope you are being sarcastic. Even if he took theophylline, which a beta2 agonists, it might give you a little more breathing capacity but doesn't make that much of difference. Sure as hell doesn't help you take a punch.
@sinusbradycardia what makes you think panama lewis did not cheat?? get a life dude pryor strugglw with arguello ,he was used to fighting no longer than 6 rounds. he only fought once past ten rounds! the seocnd fight he diid dominate arguello!
@nicablackmamba Did I say anywhere that Pryor didn't cheat? I simply gave my opinion on theophyilline and ephedrine. I don't know if he cheated or not and what concrete proof do you have that he did? I need to get a life, you need to learn how to read and comprehend before you start offering any advice to anyone else pal!
Its not true that Arguello was anti-communist, he later returned to Nicaragua and to Sandinistas. He must have seen how foul these fucking exile Cubans really were. They are all just a bunch of right-wing assholes who want to get Cuba back to the Batista times, capitalism and evil. People suffered under Batista far worse than they ever did under Castro. Only the rich were happy!
Just shows you how incredibly un-intelligent Proys cornerman was. "Give me that bottle, the one i mixed", he says over and over, Gee he didn't think somebody eventually looking at the tape would have said "Mixed with what"
Fucking Panama Lewis, I hate hearing that guys name, and I hate hearing his stupid ass voice, "Gimmie Da Bottle, Gimmie Da Bottle, No Da One I mixed" FAG
@kpagan1970 oh yea theres no doubt Pryor cheated in this 1. Luis Resto( the guy that wa caught cheating w/ panama lewis) admitted in an interview that Panama Lewis had mixed water and a breathing helping fluid( what its used in Asthma inhalers) to expand Pryors lungs so he can gain stamina.
Luis Resto said that he drank the same material that Lewis gave Pryor in his fight against Collins Jr. He said Lewis crushed asthma pills and poured what was was inside the pill into the water bottle and said that when you drink it, it opens up your lungs and get a boost of energy. So i guess you can say that Panama Lewis cheated.
What kind of "asthma pills"? Theophylline, which is a very old medication, is what I take to control my asthma. It is a great bronchial dilator, not to mention it also dilates your coronary arteries. Essentially is the "beta 2" part of epinephrine. If you're not used to taking it, I think of it could make you jittery or more energy.
Ephedrine speeds your metabolism, unnecessarily. So in essence it will use energy quicker than normal and tire you out quicker. Right? So how is taking ephedrine going to help? Even when you're setting down trying to rest between rds, your heart rate recovery will not be the same. Not too mention ephedrine causes vasoconstriction, which you don't want in fight. Think about it, you are constantly using your arms and legs and you want to decrease blood flow to them.
@executionery4145 Well,it is only my opinion but i think that Sugar Ray was too much of a showman and egocentric to step into the ring with Pryor. Pryor was no joke. Had speed comparable to Ray's,power, granite chin and that chin with Aaron Pryor's tremendous hunger for recognition would be too much for Leonard to handle imo.The fight would look the same as Pryor vs. Arguello I + II.
@tuptugen leonard actually offered pyror 500 million dollars to fight in 1981 but pyror turned it down !! leonard would have beat pryor in my opninion and doubled with the fact leoanrd fought hearns and duran who were as intimidationg or even more than pyror ! the fight just never happened thats all and i am 100 percent certain leonard if he never got injured in 1982 it would have happened and we would not be debating who would have won ! leonard 4 me pryor 4 you !! respect
@sweetassugar69 Respect to you also ,man. Well said. It would be a great fight, though. Speed for speed, power for power...As Pryors fan, i just have to say that he would certainly make Leonard uncomfortable if not something more. The thing about Aaron is that he was pissing on guys like Leonard. Thats what i like...that hunger and charisma. Totally different from charisma of Leonard who was more about pleasing the crowd and showboating. (Not taking away his skills, dont get me wrong ;) )
Ray ducked lots of fighters.. He was traunted and mocked until he gave Hearns a shot.. Ducked Hagler for 5 years before finally asking him for a fight in 1987 after Hagler had personally told him he was gonna retire.,. in 1982 he wanted no part of Hagler..

Arguello countered Pryor a lot in there fights. Only he was 135 naturally. Ray Leonard would do the same but here is the difference. Bigger, more speed, more snap and landing more shots

If Panama Lewis is involved there is no fair fight. This was a robbery.

when the best fought the best not waited until the other guy was 40, or asked a guy to move up 17 pounds or accuse him of using steroids back when boxing was real.

Leonard is punk bitch who ducked great fighters when he could took the fights (Pryor and Hagler for most of His Reign) But Aaron Pryor deserves way more respect then given but despite Arguello's toughness Pryor Taxed that ass TWICE! Nuff Said
RBB5400 1 year ago
Aaron is the greatest boxer of all time. Say he cheated all you want, thats sp ignorant. Watch this man fight. Absolutely tore peoples heads off. Was an animal.

@kingjojo14 hey fucked head........panama lewis was his trainer, God knows how many times more he cheated and did not get caught! pryor only beat arguello fairly in the second fight.

omg Pryor cheated....
BlackPoisonxX 2 years ago
Nope! I hope you are being sarcastic. Even if he took theophylline, which a beta2 agonists, it might give you a little more breathing capacity but doesn't make that much of difference. Sure as hell doesn't help you take a punch.
sinusbradycardia 2 years ago
@sinusbradycardia what makes you think panama lewis did not cheat?? get a life dude pryor strugglw with arguello ,he was used to fighting no longer than 6 rounds. he only fought once past ten rounds! the seocnd fight he diid dominate arguello!
nicablackmamba 1 year ago
@nicablackmamba Did I say anywhere that Pryor didn't cheat? I simply gave my opinion on theophyilline and ephedrine. I don't know if he cheated or not and what concrete proof do you have that he did? I need to get a life, you need to learn how to read and comprehend before you start offering any advice to anyone else pal!
sinusbradycardia 1 year ago

Lewis should have either been banned or suspended for a lengthy time period after that.

@Ninety2q, I don't blame you for being upset! Man, how obvious! Pryor cheated! There's no debate here!
kpagan1970 1 year ago 2
@kpagan1970 oh yea theres no doubt Pryor cheated in this 1. Luis Resto( the guy that wa caught cheating w/ panama lewis) admitted in an interview that Panama Lewis had mixed water and a breathing helping fluid( what its used in Asthma inhalers) to expand Pryors lungs so he can gain stamina.
AspiePilo82 1 year ago
Luis Resto said that he drank the same material that Lewis gave Pryor in his fight against Collins Jr. He said Lewis crushed asthma pills and poured what was was inside the pill into the water bottle and said that when you drink it, it opens up your lungs and get a boost of energy. So i guess you can say that Panama Lewis cheated.
boxingfan86 2 years ago 5
What kind of "asthma pills"? Theophylline, which is a very old medication, is what I take to control my asthma. It is a great bronchial dilator, not to mention it also dilates your coronary arteries. Essentially is the "beta 2" part of epinephrine. If you're not used to taking it, I think of it could make you jittery or more energy.
sinusbradycardia 2 years ago
what was in the bottle?
irinaderevkko 2 years ago
ephedrine!!! he crushed ephredrine and put it in the bottle.
T74G 2 years ago
what a cheater!
irinaderevkko 2 years ago
Ephedrine speeds your metabolism, unnecessarily. So in essence it will use energy quicker than normal and tire you out quicker. Right? So how is taking ephedrine going to help? Even when you're setting down trying to rest between rds, your heart rate recovery will not be the same. Not too mention ephedrine causes vasoconstriction, which you don't want in fight. Think about it, you are constantly using your arms and legs and you want to decrease blood flow to them.

my favorite boxer of all time is Aaron Pryor
justinhorne11 2 years ago 4
he was DEVASTATING!!!!! ....all the great "cbs" fighters of the 80's avoided him...including a friend of my fathers..the great Ray Leonard...
believe that one!!!

leonard ducked pryor?
executionery4145 2 years ago
You could see it in part 1. Leonard ducked him more then once...
tuptugen 2 years ago 29
Aaron Pryor turned down half a million to fight Ray Leonard and this is from the chumps mouth himself, not some rumor that Butch Lewis heard.
So in reality the "chump" ducked Ray Leonard in what was the most retarded decision of his life
syrandon 2 years ago
@tuptugen why did leonard duck him?
executionery4145 1 year ago
@executionery4145 Well,it is only my opinion but i think that Sugar Ray was too much of a showman and egocentric to step into the ring with Pryor. Pryor was no joke. Had speed comparable to Ray's,power, granite chin and that chin with Aaron Pryor's tremendous hunger for recognition would be too much for Leonard to handle imo.The fight would look the same as Pryor vs. Arguello I + II.
tuptugen 1 year ago
@tuptugen leonard actually offered pyror 500 million dollars to fight in 1981 but pyror turned it down !! leonard would have beat pryor in my opninion and doubled with the fact leoanrd fought hearns and duran who were as intimidationg or even more than pyror ! the fight just never happened thats all and i am 100 percent certain leonard if he never got injured in 1982 it would have happened and we would not be debating who would have won ! leonard 4 me pryor 4 you !! respect
sweetassugar69 1 year ago
@sweetassugar69 Respect to you also ,man. Well said. It would be a great fight, though. Speed for speed, power for power...As Pryors fan, i just have to say that he would certainly make Leonard uncomfortable if not something more. The thing about Aaron is that he was pissing on guys like Leonard. Thats what i like...that hunger and charisma. Totally different from charisma of Leonard who was more about pleasing the crowd and showboating. (Not taking away his skills, dont get me wrong ;) )
tuptugen 1 year ago
@tuptugen
