Because their primary function is to carry out Seele's version of Third Impact, which ends up utilizing Eva-01, also they don't have infinite energy they truly die only if their cores are destroyed. ;)

In addition, correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the Adam and Lilith clones used for the construction of the EVAs lobotomized so that they would be mostly docile if something were to go wrong, even so, an EVA rampaging around would not be pretty, look at what EVA 00 did during the botched activation test, it only had about 30 seconds battery life.

and N2 weapons can seriously damage EVA's unlike angels (00 lost an arm to one, whereas even sachiel was only slowed by it)

when i first saw this fight, i knew immediately that Asuka was gonna die... when the Eva series devoured the gundam like that, i immediately wanted to puke... and still to this day i have that same feeling when i see this... O_O
I do believe this scene is the only highlight of this movie... not because it is relevant, but because of how well executed it is. I'll never forget such a memorable moment.

Asuka doesnt get "real" wounds because her synch rate is too high. The only, real wounds she gets are when the Lances hit her.
if High synch = real wounds, she would be eviscerated when they assault the powered down 02. Instead, only when the lance hit her in the eye, and then split her arm, she gets real wounds (and its logic to suppose the same happends when the other 7 lances hit her, actually killing her)
anyway Ritsuko explains an Eva pilot feels everything their Evangelion feels when synchronized with the Eva, experiencing the pain of injuries the Eva sustains, i.e. Shinji feels like his left arm has been broken when Eva 01's arm is broken, but here in EoE Asuka sync is high and the level is still climbing up to the right arm part even Maya telling her to stop and oh btw its Spear of Longinus. ^_-

huh...i never said she doesnt feel pain. Of course higher sync = higher feeling. it was explained in episode 2. I was just pointing that only the lances are capable of cause real wounds to Asuka. High sync cant cause that by itself. If it could, she would be eviscerated before gets her arm splited. Instead, only her eye and arm get real wounds. The rest is just "feeling"
If you look carefully, you also see blood spreading in her stomach region, indicating that her stomach/guts were cut up from the inside. Also, the reason her entire arm splits in half at the end was because the evangelion didn't go entirely 'berserker' until the end. This implies that Asuka actually did get punctured like a pincushion when all of those lances hit her.

@PezunaProducciones actually, a common theory that was proven in the rebuild movie series is that the evas don't lose any time if they don't move. In other words those 5 minutes are the MAXimum amount of time if they were to fight in constant battle.

Asuka's death is the most gruesome death in anime. She honestly puts everything she has into surviving only to be then torn to pieces by the eva series. It would be less heartbreaking to watch if she wasn't so determined, so bent on surviving. Repeating the words, adamant that she would never be a part of that world. I flinched when the first spear came down because I half expected a hollywood miracle, I even shed a small tear when it happened. It puts the fear of death in you, go eva!

In relation to the films ending.The fact that out of the hundreds of millions of people on earth Asuka and Shinji where the first to reject instramentatlaity is a stretch. Wile im sure they both did reject it im fiarly sure the fact Rei Ayanami had just become a GOD had something to do with them appearing first

All EVA's, even the one Rei, Asuka, and Shuji all pilot are all clones of angels thus is why they have the ability to produce their own AT fields.
The Armor on Unit 1-3 is only designed to (1) Keep the fact they are cloned Angel's secret and (2) To be able to operate the angel via musscle synapsis (aka the commands of the armor tell the mussles they are covering how to move) It would also appear that the soul of the pilots dead mother is somehow intertwined and will act on its own on accasion
and yea I forgot to add Asuka does not want to die when it came to the end. She did not want to die with her mother, and she also rejected Instrumentality at the end, refusing to lose her physical form and join the rest of humanity in a sea of LCL.
Yes sadly she died, but she come back though at the end, about the ending is pretty much debatable and anyone can come up with their own ideas about it.

I must disagree with raargh2.
Shinji was the one given all the choices during Instrumentality. He alone held the choice of life or destruction. If Asuka did, indeed die during the Instrumentality, she only came back because SHINJI wanted her to be there with him. She had no choice in the matter. That fact may be why, at the end of the 2nd part, she says "how disgusting". Because she wanted to be dead, and she's alive instead.

at the end, she's alive because she's one of the first who have chosen to return to real world

This scene has a huge incoherence: the eva series just had to wait 5 minutes till Eva 02 loses its power. Then, Third Impact as a piece of cake!

@PezunaProducciones actually, a common theory that was proven in the rebuild movie series is that the evas don't lose any time if they don't move. In other words those 5 minutes are the MAXimum amount of time if they were to fight in constant battle.

i know the timer stopped in the second rebuild movie, but i don't remember if the timer slowed down one time or not.(i think there was such a scene, but i don't remember)

Asuka's death is the most gruesome death in anime. She honestly puts everything she has into surviving only to be then torn to pieces by the eva series. It would be less heartbreaking to watch if she wasn't so determined, so bent on surviving. Repeating the words, adamant that she would never be a part of that world. I flinched when the first spear came down because I half expected a hollywood miracle, I even shed a small tear when it happened. It puts the fear of death in you, go eva!

In relation to the films ending.The fact that out of the hundreds of millions of people on earth Asuka and Shinji where the first to reject instramentatlaity is a stretch. Wile im sure they both did reject it im fiarly sure the fact Rei Ayanami had just become a GOD had something to do with them appearing first
Reguarding Asuka's statement which is under alot fo debate it can mean alot of things. One of my favorite theorys was thrown out by the director himself who brought up Morning Sickness

All EVA's, even the one Rei, Asuka, and Shuji all pilot are all clones of angels thus is why they have the ability to produce their own AT fields.
The Armor on Unit 1-3 is only designed to (1) Keep the fact they are cloned Angel's secret and (2) To be able to operate the angel via musscle synapsis (aka the commands of the armor tell the mussles they are covering how to move) It would also appear that the soul of the pilots dead mother is somehow intertwined and will act on its own on accasion

I must disagree with raargh2.
Shinji was the one given all the choices during Instrumentality. He alone held the choice of life or destruction. If Asuka did, indeed die during the Instrumentality, she only came back because SHINJI wanted her to be there with him. She had no choice in the matter. That fact may be why, at the end of the 2nd part, she says "how disgusting". Because she wanted to be dead, and she's alive instead.

For I believe she said "How Disgusting" because of everything she just went through, both physically and mentally, physically because of she being in LCL, of being LCL when she lost physical form, and mentally because in that state, and during Instrumentality her soul was bared to the world, she wasn't just sharing Shinji and Misato's bath and toilet and air, she was in a way sharing them with everyone else in the world. That is my take on it at least.

if ppl are wondering how Asuka took part to istrumentality since she died during this scene:
watch again when the entire world is turned to LCL. You can see that Misato,Ritsuko (who were already dead) and also all the dead nerv workers are turned to LCL with a ghost Rei over them
it's obvious that 3rd impact included also those who died before its real beginning....Asuka included
at the end, she's alive because she's one of the first who have chosen to return to real world
