We can make this country better than it is - Tony Blair - 1997 - Bankrupt Britain - 2012, 3 million forecast unemployed by the end of this year, yeah, Great Improvement Tony, I'm so glad I've never voted Labour, it's up to the tories now to sort out Labour's mess. Labour created the same economic mess in the 70's by all accounts.
i am not supporting him . The credit crunch was caused by American bankers that we know as a fact wich led to the downturn or recession now brown may not have helped matters much but to say they caused it is an exageration . As i understand it The EU is just as much to blame , i dont really think we had much choice but thats what you get when you allow germans and french to dictate to your country.
i dont know about you but whenever i went to the benefits office to claim (so few times) i was never handed a wad of notes .... was you ? as i understand it it was american bankers that started this recession the only huge fuckup was the iraq war . Gordon brown must have been elected to the house of commons otherwise he is trespassing for 2 years ! and speaking of that isnt what this "coalition" is - a no majority goverment
Blair, he ran the country brilliantly, yet, the only stupid thing he did, was back bush, then he lost a portion of confidence, you could feel it in the country, i was about 9 when he won, the WHOLE country backed him, was immense. Yet come 2007, you knew the shit would hit the fan, labour had brunted the world recession, and the useless SOUTHERN assholes of the city ran the banks into the ground.. Tony should of stayed till 2010! The tories will have us thrown back to downton abbey times!!!!!!!
tbh the tories have done all they can so far, and the public need to stop acting so impatient for change and sudden boosts in spending. its gonna take years, and thats the end of it. uni fees went up, im not complaining because there was no choice
Actually doing something about tax evasion/ tax havens and scrapping trident would fill the government coffers, easily paying for the scrapping, or at least lowerring of tuition fees.
*"The government has put the bill at between £15bn and £20bn, but campaign group Greenpeace claims it will run to at least £34bn once extra costs like VAT are factored in."
Costing the nation so much. I'm not all for going back to communism just yet, but we need a PM who'll break down the system and build it up properly with rules and regulations. Then we can finally get capitalism to work for the state, and afford nice things like new hospitals and free education!
Ugh I'm no Blair fan, but I do flipping owe the '97 LP, started primary school that year and it was all up up up with equipment buildings teachers funding etc. Finished this year with massive cuts looming, looks like its back to Tory-times :P
What a great video, thank you so much for making this as a councillor & aspiring MP it’s good to see someone appreciating the best prime minister this country has had. Tony Blair gives me hope that there can be a fair society and that one person can make such a huge difference. Because of the labour party 97+ i have been able to have a fair education and a reasonable amount of money being brought up, despite my dad being a career. Hail Tony Blair! The political alternative to Christ!
Say what you want, and I agree that the Iraq war was horrible, but my sister and I were the first ones to go to university and my mother enrolled on a course, improved her language skills, found a job and has not claimed benefit since! New Labour had a profoundly positive impact on our family! Thanks Tony!
why do people support Tony Blair, he was the worst PM ever. I respect honesty in Politics, Blair had not an ounce of that, no respect for the office he held,
once bliar won in 1997 we were doomed he must aplogize for his role in making britain a craphole it is today...again the tories have to mop up liabours mess
Blair was an unprincipled, unbalanced media whore, who got his party into power by bribing the rich, bribing the underclass, and implicitly condoning Conservative economic policy, while at the same time attacking the Conservatives' record and copying the Liberal Democrats. Blair unleashed the cancers of Scottish and Welsh nationalism (which will probably destroy the UK in a few years), entrenched idleness and criminality as a way of life, and branded traditional values to be thought-crimes.
It just shows how retarded the majority of the british people are when they keep voting for Labour, it's like they're political gluttons for punishment.
Tony Blair had everything and threw it all away by lying to the country and his cabinet over an illegal war, in 1997 we all loved him then in 2007 we were glad to see him go, it's also disrespectful to say John Smith wouldn't of won the election in 97 when we will never know if he could've done, Gordon Brown has been our true hero by saving the banks he saved 500,000 jobs which will now probably go thanks to the coalition, Gordon Brown is a true statesman where as Tony Blair is a (true) liar.
As an 18 year old this is one of my earliest memory of politics but I remember everyone has such great big smiles on their faces the next day and there was a feel of change to Britain. We have not seen anything since. To all those who say that the Labour Government didnt do enough, just look at this country now. More and More people passing exams each year and unemployment never hitting the 3,000,000 despite the severe recession. Change came to Britain in '97, dnt let the tory bastards ruin it
Sorry but Blair was never a "good guy." He was a lightweight, who was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. A lightweight who turned the Labour party from one with core values into one that was merely a more mild version of the Conservative party. He completely wasted his 10 years, spending most of the time arse licking Murdoch and Bush and trying to enhance his celebrity career -
Yer it was a great day, like a breath of fresh air blew across the country. A shame that Tony Blair didnt have the courage to really change the country with that kind of mandate. Also such a shame on his course of action with America regarding the middle east but what a charismatic cabinet we had. Blair, Cook, Blunkett, Mowlamm, Dobson.
Blair should have changed the country forever and ever and ever with the majority Labour had in 1997, he could have done anything, what did he do, pass the minimum wage, wow. He was all talk no substance, after him, no British PM will ever be elected solely based on style.

Nice video - only thing I'd say is that victory for Labour was assured from the start of the election, Britain was never going to return the Tories for a 5th time as suggested. Other than that a nice trip down memory lane!
DON'T VOTE!!! Protest. Demand the forming of an emergency / crisis government to get us out of the shit before it's too late. One voice of NO FAITH in any of the sham parties. There was absolutely no way the Tories would have won the election in 97, had been 20 points behind Labour in the polls wince Black Wednesday. Ridiculous amounts of sleaze in this parliament, plus a completely reinvigorated Labour Party. The question was not "Would Labour win" but "How many seats would the Tories lose", the result? Complete landslide!
Can people please think thoroughly before they comment, I've heard some disgraceful things from people I doubt even understand what they're commenting on.
I don't mind Labour or the Conservatives, but whatever you do, don't vote LibDem. Check out their policies and you'll see what an extreme, fringe group they are.
not only that clegg is the most dangrous leader out of the main 3 he would defuse our nukes and weaken our country even more by joning the euro hes nothing more than a eurocart whos too pro europe
Thankfully he aint going to have any control over defence and hes agreed to drop support for joining the euro so he doesnt pose too serious a risk in the coalition government
@roflcopter2006 Those deaths cannot all be directly linked to Tony Blair. I suppose you believe this because Blair decided to enter a pointless war. So would you say the same of Herbert Asquith, who involved Britain in a far more pointless war in which 15 million people died?
@WiseOwlOfGallifrey Hitler never killed a jew personally. Is his hands clean of the holocaust?
I didn't say Iraq was a pointless war, it had plenty of purpose. Its purpose was to rape the country of its oil, and deliver various corporation and heads pof central banks huge profits at the expense of the taxpayers who had to fund it.
Blairs motive was not sincere, and anyone who thinks he invaded Iraq because he was worried for our safety, seriously needs to stop watching tv.
@WiseOwlOfGallifrey Given the circumstances of what happened in Iraq, i think it's actually you who needs to present some facts to me. I think the downing street memo, the halliburton no-bid contracts, record profits and non-existent weapons of mass destruction back my argument up pretty well.
@roflcopter2006 i'm not getting involved in this argument that has no resolution. All I'll say is I would not compare Tony Blair to an actual mass murderer, a person who actually physically, with intention takes the life of another innocent human being in significant numbers.
@roflcopter2006 All Prime Ministers have an immense amount of pressure and responsibility on their shoulders and that increases when military affairs are involved. He may be responsible for a war in which many innocent lives were lost, but he is still a creditable human being. It is very easy to brand people like that, but is immoral. Those are my final words.
Sad really, that "New" Labour supporters are now left to live in the past - and wish for long past victories. Tony Blair has long since been shown up as the shallow politician he always was, whilst conversly, history looks back much more warmly on John Major.
not quite the utopia the film suggests, but keep the tories out at any cost. cameron and his cronies will take this country backwards. i'll always vote labour
The Tory party is unable to change. Don't let Boy George into number 11 to perform his cuts to our public services which are driven by far right ideology and not economic logic.
Are you as ignorant as most Tories, then? Judging by your appalling syntax ("I rather vote"), I daresay you are. You cannot justify a record of long-term mass unemployment, a doubling in crime, Black Wednesday, weak leadership and sleaze, and dangerous Euroscepticism while considering the Labour record of a reduction in crime of 36%, a Minimum Wage, a peace settlement in Northern Ireland, more rights for workers and an infinitely better NHS.
@IntellectFourtyTwo Unemployment is at a 16 year high and rising to 7.6%, minimum wage yeah credit Labour for that but with a 480 seats that was easy, crime reduction, gun crime is up 57%, crime fell be record amounts when Michael Howard was home secretary and nowadays it's rare for a criminal to serve their sentence, Northern Ireland, there still are troubles, it just so happens that islamic fundamentals get more coverage, and the NHS is better, but money has been spent poorly in places.
@Ninje56 hes saying all Tories are ignorant yet he obviously knows few Tories therefore he is ignorant in his knowledge of Tories which makes him a hypocrite.
so
HA you don't even know what the hell he's on about right back at you.
@IntellectFourtyTwo I totally agree we need more people like you on here please tell this to all the other idiots who think Blair was a twat when they don't even know ANYTHING about politics!
@IntellectFourtyTwo How about when the Tories came into office in 79', there was inflation of 27% we were the sick man of Europe, we had had to face the humiliation of an IMF bail out under, you guessed it, labour. The country was going to the dogs. By 97' there was strong growth low inflation and a country with an ethos of enterprise and optimism, I shudder to think what the country would have turned out like if there had been 18 years of labour instead.
@IntellectFourtyTwo Further to that Labour has managed to completely mess things up - again. Record deficits, the worst financial crash in history, of which we have yet to experience the worst of by some way. Mass immigration, sovereignty sold to the EU I could keep going forever. I grant you the tories are not much better, there is so little difference between the main parties these days they all subscribe to the same statist socialist ideas and they will all royally fuck the British economy.
@matthewthecoolkid The favour would be to come to a neglected part of london and see what labours created with their true anti social engineered green magic!. I must be the only english person amits the full wrath of eastern euorpeans and i feel completely alien!.
@jester18uk Yes, well that would be great, but I'm not Labour, conservative, etc. I'm merely an independent who does not vote out association with a party but instead on what I think is right!
@NewLabour1 well said I have to say, you share my view on this one, the last thing we need is a Tory government, that would be a nightmare for this country.
@AussiePolitics Oh it will labour have not even got a leader and already several council by elections are seeing big swings to labour in previously safe tory seats. Also a handful of defections from conservative to labour, the future looks bright and it it is all thanks to the Cameron Clegg relationship making labour stronger
NO vote agasint labour ppl are fed up of the same old fucking lies and crap that the Labour government have come up with and have done for the past 13 years this country is now a mess and thanks to Blair and brown
" you can't trust labour on defense!" oops a fucking daisy, ive just lost my seat to labour. wo i think i will stop criticising ppl i am inferior to. by the way, who was that wanker
just look at all those conservatives. they always have to be the slimy bastards, and reli lack modesty. shame we havent seen a party besides labour or tories in power in a while
The look on the faces of Norman Lamont, Michael Portillo, and John major at the end is utterly priceless. The people of Britain know the difference in this election, Labour will try to maintain a strong economy whilst making gradual cuts to the debt caused by the bailout of the bankers whilst trying to keep as many people in employment as possible whilst the Tories will still be the same, low tax for millionaire bankers whilst slashing public services and their employment of people in half.
Hold on, you make it sound like Labour are the only party to have ever taken this country to war. Lets see the Conservatives roll of honour, shall we?
- World War 2 (caused partly due to appeasement by Conservatives.)
- Korean War
- Suez Crisis
- Falklands War
- 1st Gulf War
All of these wars can certainly be justified, but they can also be opposed. Matter of opinions, perhaps?
weatherallc05, you're not being rude, and I accept what you say. However, the Conservative Government at the time (under Neville Chamberlain) certainly didn't help matters by allowing Germany to take land from various countries before we finally declared war - at which point Germany felt invicible.
@pterobsven appeasement was also the official stance of the Labour party and was greatly adhered to by the general public. It was actually Labour that took us to the Korean War - LEARN YOUR HISTORY. The Falklands War and the 1st Gulf war had LEGAL INTERNATIONAL BACKING, unlike the Iraq war of 2003. The Suez Crisis seems to be the only stain on the Tories's record on your list.
@weatherallc05 I stated facts and also my opinion - and judging by all the posts I've just read by you, it becomes quite clear that you're staunchly Conservative and literally refuse to listen to anyone else. How typical. I'm also assuming you suffer from some form of learning disability judging by your grammar and spelling. Education, Education, Education. Hahaha.
@pterobsven i swear down on my mothers life i am not tory biased. Please trust me, i do not support the tories, but i am just coming out and saying they have done a decent job. about the learning disability, its semantic pragmatic disorder. I am starting to treat it like its not there anymore, but it still gives some torrid times. so just cut me abit of slack, cos my style does appear as not normal to others. sorry :(
just a little unfair this video, bearing in mind that the tories were never going to win this election so to say it looks like 5 elections in a row is ludicrous. The tories at the time were worn out and done, that being said they left the economy in a great state to which Gordon Brown asked " Do they want a medal for that", shame you won't be able to say that when you hand over the reins eh Gordon??
He may pretend to have our interests at heart, but the facts are clear. He wants to scrap the legal guarantee that gives us four weeks paid holiday, the right to be consulted about changes at work and our entitlement to parental leave - denying the legal right for parents to spend time with their newborn babies in the critical first few weeks. That's just three examples - but Cameron's threatening dozens more of your rights.
NEW LABOUR - RUBBING BRITAIN'S NOSE IN NEO-MARXIST SH*T! (CONCEPT SINGLE 20)
Because if you want your national borders porous (despite we being an island), your paedophiles pampered and your Christmasses banned, then VOTE LABOUR!
Heres some of Labour's achievements in the last 12 years; -Highest education results -1/3 down on crime -Lowest waiting times for NHS -The right to see a cancer specialist in 2 weeks -Sure Start -Highest Child Benefits -Talks with the other EU NATO countries to pull our soldiers out of Afghanistan -Nationalizing the banks -Mertanaty Leave and Pay That is the Britain built by Labour What have the Conservatives achieved in the last 100 years Poll tax, 3 million unemployed and miners strikes
poor ol Major lol felt quite sorry for him in 97, you could tell that even he was getting rather tired of it all aswell im sure lol but tbh we did need a change in 1997 after 18 dragging years of a conservative government! But now we do need a change of government once again labour realy have let Britain down tbh
13 years later, we were bankrupt morally and financially. Thanks Labour.

@WiseOwlOfGallifrey Iraq. 1 Million dead. Think.
roflcopter2006 1 year ago
@roflcopter2006 Those deaths cannot all be directly linked to Tony Blair. I suppose you believe this because Blair decided to enter a pointless war. So would you say the same of Herbert Asquith, who involved Britain in a far more pointless war in which 15 million people died?
WiseOwlOfGallifrey 1 year ago
@WiseOwlOfGallifrey Hitler never killed a jew personally. Is his hands clean of the holocaust?
I didn't say Iraq was a pointless war, it had plenty of purpose. Its purpose was to rape the country of its oil, and deliver various corporation and heads pof central banks huge profits at the expense of the taxpayers who had to fund it.
Blairs motive was not sincere, and anyone who thinks he invaded Iraq because he was worried for our safety, seriously needs to stop watching tv.
roflcopter2006 1 year ago
@roflcopter2006 I'm not getting to an argument of possibilities and accussations. Show me the facts. Indisputable facts.
WiseOwlOfGallifrey 1 year ago
@WiseOwlOfGallifrey Given the circumstances of what happened in Iraq, i think it's actually you who needs to present some facts to me. I think the downing street memo, the halliburton no-bid contracts, record profits and non-existent weapons of mass destruction back my argument up pretty well.
roflcopter2006 1 year ago
@roflcopter2006 i'm not getting involved in this argument that has no resolution. All I'll say is I would not compare Tony Blair to an actual mass murderer, a person who actually physically, with intention takes the life of another innocent human being in significant numbers.
WiseOwlOfGallifrey 1 year ago
@roflcopter2006 All Prime Ministers have an immense amount of pressure and responsibility on their shoulders and that increases when military affairs are involved. He may be responsible for a war in which many innocent lives were lost, but he is still a creditable human being. It is very easy to brand people like that, but is immoral. Those are my final words.

Sad really, that "New" Labour supporters are now left to live in the past - and wish for long past victories. Tony Blair has long since been shown up as the shallow politician he always was, whilst conversly, history looks back much more warmly on John Major.

matthewthecoolkid 2 years ago
Are you as ignorant as most Tories, then? Judging by your appalling syntax ("I rather vote"), I daresay you are. You cannot justify a record of long-term mass unemployment, a doubling in crime, Black Wednesday, weak leadership and sleaze, and dangerous Euroscepticism while considering the Labour record of a reduction in crime of 36%, a Minimum Wage, a peace settlement in Northern Ireland, more rights for workers and an infinitely better NHS.
IntellectFourtyTwo 2 years ago 15
@IntellectFourtyTwo Unemployment is at a 16 year high and rising to 7.6%, minimum wage yeah credit Labour for that but with a 480 seats that was easy, crime reduction, gun crime is up 57%, crime fell be record amounts when Michael Howard was home secretary and nowadays it's rare for a criminal to serve their sentence, Northern Ireland, there still are troubles, it just so happens that islamic fundamentals get more coverage, and the NHS is better, but money has been spent poorly in places.

Ninje56 1 year ago
@IntellectFourtyTwo How about when the Tories came into office in 79', there was inflation of 27% we were the sick man of Europe, we had had to face the humiliation of an IMF bail out under, you guessed it, labour. The country was going to the dogs. By 97' there was strong growth low inflation and a country with an ethos of enterprise and optimism, I shudder to think what the country would have turned out like if there had been 18 years of labour instead.
DukeofWellington91 1 year ago
@IntellectFourtyTwo Further to that Labour has managed to completely mess things up - again. Record deficits, the worst financial crash in history, of which we have yet to experience the worst of by some way. Mass immigration, sovereignty sold to the EU I could keep going forever. I grant you the tories are not much better, there is so little difference between the main parties these days they all subscribe to the same statist socialist ideas and they will all royally fuck the British economy.

However, the Conservative Government at the time (under Neville Chamberlain) certainly didn't help matters by allowing Germany to take land from various countries before we finally declared war - at which point Germany felt invicible.
pterobsven 2 years ago
@pterobsven appeasement was also the official stance of the Labour party and was greatly adhered to by the general public. It was actually Labour that took us to the Korean War - LEARN YOUR HISTORY. The Falklands War and the 1st Gulf war had LEGAL INTERNATIONAL BACKING, unlike the Iraq war of 2003. The Suez Crisis seems to be the only stain on the Tories's record on your list.

@pterobsven i swear down on my mothers life i am not tory biased. just a little unfair this video, bearing in mind that the tories were never going to win this election so to say it looks like 5 elections in a row is ludicrous. The tories at the time were worn out and done, that being said they left the economy in a great state to which Gordon Brown asked " Do they want a medal for that", shame you won't be able to say that when you hand over the reins eh Gordon??
gotlaidinellon 2 years ago
He may pretend to have our interests at heart, but the facts are clear. He wants to scrap the legal guarantee that gives us four weeks paid holiday, the right to be consulted about changes at work and our entitlement to parental leave - denying the legal right for parents to spend time with their newborn babies in the critical first few weeks. That's just three examples - but Cameron's threatening dozens more of your rights.
