O-m-g! . I loved foster Brookes, he is and ever shall be the "loveable lush" that everyone loved, I remember growing up watching him, and from the off I believed he was drunk, but it was too funny to watch him. Then I caught on that he was playing when on a show he was doing something serious, and then slipped in the drunk mode, then back "sober" He was one of a kind.
It's Jayne...in a wig. Her mannerisms are hers, if you've followed her career. I did b/c I enjoyed their act. I saw the original when it aired back then. She has reminisced
and talked about this episode in archived interviews. Find them on You Tube.
Foster Brooks and Tim Conway are the two comedians who NO ONE around them, regardless of how hard they try, can keep a straight face. Those two are truly in a class by themselves. The are both comedian's comedians.
I think that woman in pink must have been on a heavy dose of valium.
What really makes this work is the reaction of Jayne Meadows. She really thought he was drunk, and, I believe, Meadows later said that during a commercial break, she tried to get Brooks thrown off the set because she thought he was ruining her husband's show.
@gfpirate That is not Jayne Meadows. Jayne was born in 1920. This footage is from one of Steve Allens shows late 60's early 70's. That would make Jayne Meadows @ fifty years old. Does the woman in pink realy look like a fifty year old? Can you even find one other picture of Jayne in that hair style?
@juilliardpark Sorry Charlie, convince me. Do you expect me to believe on "trust me" a fifty year old woman looks that young. The Meadows sisters have rounder faces. The "Lady inPink" has an elongated face. Trust, yeah right. Come up with something I can believe in. That actress is Monica Evans. Likely promoting a Disney film she did voice work on at about the time of this show.
@TheGardener61 Its Medows ! Go to imdb.com ; type in the new Steve Allen show,,host are Allen ,Lionel Hampton and Jayne Medows..Theres your proof :),,,They have these docs called plastics surgons who do facelifts,,look it up ,lol.
If none of the show's guests expected him to act drunk, he must not yet have been famous for it... Which would make this the public debut of Foster's legendary drunk act right?
It is not Audrey nor Jane Meadows next to Foster Brooks in this clip. How this woman was identified as such is beyond me. However, ever piece of information I've Googled names her as Jayne or Jane Meadows. She is in fact MONICA EVANS. A British actress. For all of you doubters, search pictures of all three. The Meadows women have much rounder faces. Monica is best known for her role as Cecily Pigeon in the original Odd Couple movie with Mathaeu and Lemon. See for yourself.
In a later interview I heard Jayne Meadows say that even though Steve was the only one to know about the drunk bit ; that she had a feeling it was a put on because she said Steve never would have allowed his show or a guest to get out of control or embarrass themselfs like that. What a Great entertainer Steve Allen always will Be...*
I think 75cmf meant to say "That's not AUDREY Meadows seated next to Foster Brooks." It IS Jayne Meadows, Steve's wife. Audrey was Ralph Kramden's wife Alice on "The Honeymooners," which was a feature within the Jackie Gleason Show.
I believe the woman in the grey outfit is Israeli singer Aliza Kashi. Brooks ruffled her feathers. Later in this clip she takes off her jacket because the "drunken" man's behavior was making her feel too warm. He had everybody in the palm of his hand.
Absolute genius. I remember watching him as a kid on the Des O'Connor Show and my old man nearly having a seizure through laughing so hard. Happy Days indeed.
She wasn't trying to keep her game face on; she was trying to show how morally superior she was to everyone in the room. She was married to Steve Allen at the time and that was why he was having such a good time watching her be offended; he knew how puritan she was. By the time of the 3 commandments joke, she finally gets it and is pissed that her husband didn't let her in on the gag. I'll bet good money that she never let him forget it and their bed was cold
This was shown on "Steve Allen's Laughback". Brooks' self-intro was done "sober", so NO guest was ready for what they saw. At about 1:30, notice Meadows hand on her knee; she said she almost dug a hole in her stocking. She was offended (she didn't know it was an act) and was trying to keep her game face on. At the commercial break, Steve Lawrence said he collared Brooks for being drunk and Brooks had to let him in on the gag at that point.

Thanks so much for uploading this. About the only decent things to watch these day are on YouTube. That's really sad, but thanks to people like you, we still get to see SOME things. :)
@kittyat6 not quite.. She does have a clue, but in those days it was very "unlady like" to laugh out loud.. A gal had to keep her composure.. Thats all, inside they're busting a seam like the rest of us..
@hwoods01: Oh please. These were the days of Lucille Ball. Perhaps in the south, women were more uptight, but certainly not in Hollywood. Just watch some of the other Roasts and you'll see plenty of laughter from the women. Jane rarely laughed; frankly I don't think she did "get much.": . Very off putting.IMHO.
The guests were all celebs, I think they were in on it.. to the right of Foster is Steve Allen's wife, Jayne Meadows, to her right is comedian Louis Nye, and across from him is Steve Lawrence.. I'm not sure who the woman in the middle in the grey suit is but on the end is game show host Ralph Edwards!
@swedeeepie He said, "Take it or PITH off," in reference to the American stereotype of British chaps wearing "pith helmets" and jodhpurs, et cetera. Of course, one could interpret that in another way, too... Foster was great with the innuendos. Which word, by the way, he once referred to as being "Italian for 'Preparation H'!"
@MsBedwell Just type his name into Youtube's search and knock yourself out. He did a whole series of the old Dean Martin roasts. Jonathan Winters also was screamingly funny on those roasts; check them all out!
@MsBedwell Brooks is amazing. Besides this I found many 'Roast' clips as well as him doing the airline pilot with Dean Martin. HOW wonderful he was and I didn't appreciate him nearly as much in the 60.
Thanks, randoley. It certainly won't mark the first time I've been mistaken. However, I still stand by my original observation. But cheers, anyway! Main thing is that we're both Foster Brooks fans...
Foster Brooks was known for portraying two kinds of characters: the "sophisticated Englishman" and "the lovable lush". Most people know him from the latter, especially when he did a variation of that persona [as "Mr. Sternhagen"] during "MORK & MINDY"'s 1980-'81 season.
who is that dumb ass blond sitting next to the great foster brooks? that bitch acts like he is annoying her. She doesn't even grin at his hilarious act. She's a boring dick head, lol
The lady in pink next to the great Foster Brooks looked nervous! Looks as if she really believe Mr. Brooks was pissed drunk! That's how real (and great) the man was when he played his 'drunk' role!
@Habsfan0206 The lady is Jayne Meadows, Steve allen's wife. She said on another show that she was actually angry that FB came on Steve's show drunk. She was ready to read him the riot act after the show ended, but then was told it was all an act.
By the way: the gentleman sitting to Steve Allen's right is Ralph Edwards; producer of TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES (the Philadelphia-based gameshow that first made Bob Barker a household name). And, creator/host of THIS IS YOUR LIFE, which reunited the old friends and relatives of celebrities ranging from Roy Rogers to Shirley Jones!

Funny, funny man. Nothing like these guys these days.., an era gone forever! I love the reaction of the lady in pink.. she thinks he is really DRUNK! LOL
The "lady in pink" is Mrs. Steve Allen, Jayne Meadows.
On another vid, Troylito made this comment: "This was the show that introduced Foster's act to the world. Allen was in on it, as was the guy that pretends to know him, but noone else on that show. Steve Lawrence was sitting there so pissed that a person would appear drunk that during a break he nearly punched Brooks for disrespecting everyone. Watch that show. That started it all. "
i can't believe she didn't know that he was acting! lol
i grew up watching this stuff and i thought it was so funny because he was so convincing, even though i knew he was really just acting. gee, i guess not everyone knew back then that he was acting.
@snrbusanalyst I really wish these days were back or I wish little to remember these good old days of television and great ones like Steve Allen and Foster Brooks. Nothing but crap on tv today and it just gets worse.
Once the word got out about his "act" it really ceased being funny. The best FB was when NOBODy knew the act. They thought it was real! That's the beauty of the Steve Allan segment. Agreed?
I think it's obvious he's a fake, isn't that why they audience are laughing after all. That's why it's funny. If he was simply really drunk it wouldn't be the same. it's obvious, and funny.
Folks, I believe the lady in pink is Steve Allen's wife... Jane Meadows. May be wrong, but it sure does look like her. This is great humor! It's funny to see Steve crack up.
That would be Mrs. Robert Goulet, Carol Lawrence (actress, singer, dancer, one of the biggest Broadway stars in the 50's and 60's known for creating the role of Maria in West Side Story as well as numerous others).
The other is indeed Mrs. Steve Allen, Jayne Meadows. The other men are Steve Lawrence (no relation), Ralph Edwards and Louie Nye.
No. That is Louie Nye. Trust me on this one, LOL. First of all the receding hairline at :08 is a dead give away. You might have to pause it around 1:07 to 1:09. Poor Louie Nye, no one seems to remember him.
No. It was louis nye, please watch a bunch of his videos on you tube if you don't know him, not only will it be obvious but it you will enjoy his work, especially from the steve allen show.
@Gnillob802 Poor Louie Nye?? How about Monica Evans? (now deceased) Everybody has misidentified her as Jayne Meadows. The funny thing is, I just went thru 12 pages of comments of people speaking with total authority that it was Jayne. All because she was misidentified, and every one accepted it. If you want a real laugh, read all the comments and see how people quote Jayne commenting on the episode. Monica was British, which may account for some of the 'uptight' character claims made of her.
@TheGardener61 I didn't read that part, LOL. Magician Penn Jillette (of Penn and Teller) asked some young people if they could name the Beatles and they couldn't. His point was that no matter how famous you become as a performer its fleeting. The only reason people remember John Wayne, Lucille Ball, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe is because their names are licensed and are widely marketed today. I know quite a few people who know who John Wayne is without ever seeing any of his films.
Oh yeah...not only the women, but Steve Lawrence as well. The only person in on it was the host and the guy he shook hands with when he came out. Lawrence was actually so upset that this guy would show up drunk that he nearly punched him during the break. Allen had to let the guests in on it after that. Brooks was something else.
Brooks' appearances with Allen led to an offer from Perry Como to be his opening act on tour. Como connected Brooks with Dean Martin, and the rest is history.
Allen "discovered" Brooks in an L.A. nightclub doing his classic routine in the mid-60's and gave him his first national exposure as a guest on his show. Brooks had moved to the West Coast to re-invent himself as a standup-comic actor after his long career as a Radio-TV personality in several midwestern markets had ground to a halt due to his alcoholism. Brooks finally went sober in 1964 after winning a bet that he could stay dry for a whole weekend, and never drank again after that.
At 1:30 Foster makes reference to the original "Roddy McDowell Spectacular". Could someone enlighten me? I did not get that joke reference. Was Rodney McDowell a television icon in the early days of television like Ed Sullivan??? Please advise.
It takes a real genius to pull off such an act and not end up laughing himself. I don't much about the history of Foster Brooks, but is he one of the comedians who had a traumatic childhood because family members were alcoholics and he decided to turn something sad into something funny? Brooks is terribly funny.
Again,Foster had often said that his character wasn`t somebody pretending to be drunk, but rather someone who is drunk, trying to act sober!Think about it!
@Baburote Absolutely correct, and that`s what makes it so difficult!Anyone can act like a drunk, but its another task to play a drunk who is trying to act sober, and thats what Foster`s act was all -about!
@thebigfist Lenny Bruce did a similar bit on record called "White Collar Drunks" as opposed to the blue collar ones portrayed by Red Skelton in his skit, Guzzler's Gin. "They THINK they're impeccably dressed, acting sober--DRUNK out of their minds. (slurred speech) "You think I'm drunk, don't you..." (Bartender) "No mister, you look pe

I absolutely love love love Foster Brooks...the drunk airline pilot skit has no equal ever from any comic...
I was a little kid when I saw this and all his performances but I still haven't seen anyone as funny as this guy.

Foster Brooks had no equal.

Carycomic 1 year ago
Nope. Don't agree. Foster pulled it off everytime even if you knew his act. He was an all time great.
Soleman92 2 years ago 5
Once the word got out about his "act" it really ceased being funny. The best FB was when NOBODy knew the act. They thought it was real! That's the beauty of the Steve Allan segment. Agreed?
riddleswings 2 years ago
I thought he was really great on the Dean Martin roasts and everybody knew it was act then
polytide50 2 years ago
I think it's obvious he's a fake, isn't that why they audience are laughing after all. That's why it's funny. If he was simply really drunk it wouldn't be the same. it's obvious, and funny.

Folks, I believe the lady in pink is Steve Allen's wife... Jane Meadows. May be wrong, but it sure does look like her. This is great humor! It's funny to see Steve crack up.
ratfinkdaddyo 2 years ago
That is Jayne Meadows. I met her at the Game Show Convention in 2004. She will be 90 this year.

This is she! How she was able to keep a straight face, I'll never know. I love the way she'd look blankly over at Bob Newhart! BWAHHHAAAAA!

She wasn't in on the joke. Just Steve Allen.

I think jayne Meadows is the one in the pink next to Brooks. I don't know the one next to Steve L.

Gnillob802 2 years ago
Actually, the man sitting at Jayne Meadows left is Dick Cavett, not Louie Nye.
gazork123 2 years ago
No. That is Louie Nye. Trust me on this one, LOL. First of all the receding hairline at :08 is a dead give away. You might have to pause it around 1:07 to 1:09. Poor Louie Nye, no one seems to remember him.
Gnillob802 2 years ago
Brilliant clip - I assumed that was Bob Newhart to Jayne Meadows left......definitely not Newhart ?
170672346 2 years ago
No. It was louis nye, please watch a bunch of his videos on you tube if you don't know him, not only will it be obvious but it you will enjoy his work, especially from the steve allen show.
Gnillob802 2 years ago
@Gnillob802 Poor Louie Nye?? How about Monica Evans? (now deceased) Everybody has misidentified her as Jayne Meadows. The funny thing is, I just went thru 12 pages of comments of people speaking with total authority that it was Jayne. All because she was misidentified, and every one accepted it. If you want a real laugh, read all the comments and see how people quote Jayne commenting on the episode. Monica was British, which may account for some of the 'uptight' character claims made of her.
TheGardener61 9 months ago
@TheGardener61 I didn't read that part, LOL. Magician Penn Jillette (of Penn and Teller) asked some young people if they could name the Beatles and they couldn't. His point was that no matter how famous you become as a performer its fleeting. The only reason people remember John Wayne, Lucille Ball, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe is because their names are licensed and are widely marketed today. I know quite a few people who know who John Wayne is without ever seeing any of his films.
Gnillob802 9 months ago
@Gnillob802 You nailed Louie Nye, someone thought he was Dick Cavet???
TheGardener61 9 months ago
I should also add that Louie Nye was a regular on Steve Allen going back to The Tonight Show. Some of his appearances are available on You Tube.

ramey58 2 years ago
The women really do think he is drunk, I think
Nevada747 2 years ago
Oh yeah...not only the women, but Steve Lawrence as well. The only person in on it was the host and the guy he shook hands with when he came out. Lawrence was actually so upset that this guy would show up drunk that he nearly punched him during the break. Allen had to let the guests in on it after that. Brooks was something else.
Troylito 2 years ago 2
Brooks' appearances with Allen led to an offer from Perry Como to be his opening act on tour. Como connected Brooks with Dean Martin, and the rest is history.
straightarrow123 2 years ago 4
Allen "discovered" Brooks in an L.A. nightclub doing his classic routine in the mid-60's and gave him his first national exposure as a guest on his show. Brooks had moved to the West Coast to re-invent himself as a standup-comic actor after his long career as a Radio-TV personality in several midwestern markets had ground to a halt due to his alcoholism. Brooks finally went sober in 1964 after winning a bet that he could stay dry for a whole weekend, and never drank again after that.
straightarrow123 2 years ago 3
One of the greatest things to watch about Steve Allen ever was when he starts laughing at something...he just loses it.

At 1:30 Foster makes reference to the original "Roddy McDowell Spectacular". Could someone enlighten me? I did not get that joke reference. Was Rodney McDowell a television icon in the early days of television like Ed Sullivan??? Please advise.

Because the terms Roddy McDowell and
Spectacular are contradictory. Like contemplating your navel with unbridled excitement.

It takes a real genius to pull off such an act and not end up laughing himself. I don't much about the history of Foster Brooks, but is he one of the comedians who had a traumatic childhood because family members were alcoholics and he decided to turn something sad into something funny? Brooks is terribly funny.

Foster Brooks is awesome
amazingjecklebrother 2 years ago 4
if ya read the comment above right, the guests had no idea he was a fake drunk, this is awesome cause they dont know what to do

Again,Foster had often said that his character wasn`t somebody pretending to be drunk, but rather someone who is drunk, trying to act sober!Think about it!
thebigfist 2 years ago 14
He was a true originator, a comic genious. I love his works! I grew up watching the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts!

@thebigfist
You mean
A sober acting as a drunk trying to be sober - I think you are right.
Thats that that makes it so funny...
Baburote 1 year ago
@Baburote Absolutely correct, and that`s what makes it so difficult!Anyone can act like a drunk, but its another task to play a drunk who is trying to act sober, and thats what Foster`s act was all -about!
thebigfist 1 year ago
@thebigfist Lenny Bruce did a similar bit on record called "White Collar Drunks" as opposed to the blue collar ones portrayed by Red Skelton in his skit, Guzzler's Gin. "They THINK they're impeccably dressed, acting sober--DRUNK out of their minds. (slurred speech) "You think I'm drunk, don't you..." (Bartender) "No mister, you look pe
