  • wow booby gets it in

  • I don't usually comment on YouTube videos, but even for an amateur player like myself (or especially for an amateur player like myself), this inspires faith in the human mind.

  • Why didn't white just block the check with Knight to F3?

  • The funny thing is... I think Bobby saw Nxf2 long before he played it. Most players wouldn't have even seen it while it was available, but Bobby saw it before it made itself playable. Unreal.

  • it's scary how a "mature" Bobby intertwined his great Chess instincts with unrivaled calculation. I have trouble believing a computer could ever match this.

  • Does anyone know which game Fischer beat Spassky in in 1972 where at the end Spassky got up and applauded to Fischer?

  • ...insanity...

  • This may be an unnecessary question, but what happens if instead of, after Fischer sacrifices his d pawn and moves Bb7+, what if Byrne were to move his knight to f3, blocking the check? I assume that that defense would fail as well, but I'm curious as to why it would, and why you didn't consider it in your analysis?

  • i think that Bobby Fischer was greater chess talent than Gary Kasparov. It's too bad that they didn't compete together...

  • Thanks Sean..really appreciate your analysis/commentary.

  • This one and the "game of the century" are my two favorite Bobby Fischer chess games. This game in particular, features an "octopus knight" on d3. Gary kasparov had a similar game in the 1985 world chess championship (also with the black pieces) and he destroyed Karpov...I like the octopus knight concept, I think I'm a bit of squid myself.

  • genius isn't a born gift, it's something that's earned; and Fischer spent years upon years reaching those levels, for that I admire him and his passion

  • awesome game by boby.

  • holy shit!

  • Just want to thank you for these videos. I literally know nothing about chess (besides the basic movements) but I still find them enjoyable to watch. Very neat stuff.

  • Such a tragic life story,,but at least a class act Gov welcomed him. Before I forget,,fuk the US Gov then, now, and forever.

  • I'm with bobdigital..Bobby rarely lost once he accepted that even HE had to accept a draw every now and again. 11-0 in the US Open..never done before or since...2 years of top rated play with not a loss or draw--never done before or since. About 8 of Chernev's top 12 of all time were active when Bobby played and he owned them all. They know now he had Asbergers--like Rain Man playing chess. Over the board for a single game? The greatest ever. Tournament play--I go with Karpov for strongest.

  • Well Fischer goes into the mating line, but early on it is clear he can settle for a draw by rep

  • Judging from the amount of games featuring Fischer in your library, you have a great love for Fischer, judging from the way you speak about him, you have a great admiration for him, and from the way you defend his play in the comment section, you have a great faith in him. From the way this game went, I now see why, Fischer was a genius. He saw a winning line that not even Fritz saw, such stunning and dumbfounding creativity. Absolutely brilliant, this game had me shaking my head in disbelief.

  • I read that it took Fritz 11 hours running to something like 11 or 12 ply to find the knight sac. Amazing.

  • @oneputtsteven My fritz 11 finds it almost immediatley at depth 15

  • Uh, this was Donald Byrne versus Bobby, not Robert.

  • i enjoyed that

  • That was absolutely incredible, especially with the diagonal. Thanks for sharing.

  • Bobby was a sick chess player. Him and Capablanca best ever hands down.

  • Bravo awesome miniature!

  • Can sum1 plz explain to me why not Queen takes Bishop on d4 at 8:51?

  • @AzianGangsta5942 Because of the mate.... Qg2

  • this is obviously a brilliant chess game by Bobby, but don't think all of them are like this.... There are many games he lost really easily without anything special going on in it....also boring games too.... But this one is one hell of a game really....

  • @Athalxoz

Many games he lost really easily...? Maybe when he was very young, but other than that there are very few of these indeed. Of course there are boring games - but it is the same with every player in history. But moreso with Bobby than any other player in history, his games - even the "dull" ones - have very rich and special ideas going on beneath the surface, so it really is detracting from him for you to speak this way my friend =0)

  • @SeanGGodley

Can you check a game he lost to a grandmaster from my country Vladimir Kovacevic, who i don't consider to be nearly as good or popular as Bobby ofc, he was just a decent chess player from what i know about him and yet he made bobby look silly, it was 1970 thou, at Bobby's peak

  • @SeanGGodley

I am trying to give you the link but it says " error, try again " when i try to post it :S

  • @SeanGGodley

"This really was an outstanding game by Kovacevic, who was still an IM at the time. One of only 6 (classical) games which Fischer lost in his peak years 70-72, and the only one lost to a player who wasn't at the very top (the other losses were to Spassky, Petrosian, and Larsen). " that's what people say about the game so I suppose my countryman was better than I thought:P

Cheers Sean when's new video coming out?

  • @Athalxoz

Bobby has the greatest win percentage ever.

  • Fisher, for all his personal problems, was so amazing. i think he just got bored with the game in a way. i remember reading somewhere that bobby was once asked what he thought about the Kasparov Karpov match (the first one i think) and he said "Eh they are playing terrible chess." i used to think he was just being a jerk but maybe he was that much better...

  • What if queen takes d4 pawn at 8:03?

That would just mean losing the knight but would be balanced by 2 knight advantage earlier.

  • Nice but perhaps move a little bit slower otherwise great

  • I wonder how many positions are mating or winning like this, but not noticed?

  • I don't know how someone who could see something like this (the way Fischer did) could ever loose a single game.

This is just utterly crazy. The game was exactly even just a few moves before he got into the mating line. To consider the opponent did not really make any mistakes (not the best moves available but nothing wrong either) and for that to happen is just amazing.

  • I agree - it's both fascinating and awe-inspiring! Glad you enjoyed it.

    Sean

  • I ran this in Frits 11 and it recommends 22. Nf3, what is your comment on that SeanGGodley

  • 22. ... Qf5 and surely black is winning. Fischer would have considered every defence, rest assured!

  • @SeanGGoddley.

I cant believe Fritz didn't see that. What an amazing player.

  • amazing, keep em coming! thx sean

  • Nevermind, I see it now. thanks! great video!

  • Unfortunately I don't see the lines, but can someone explain why at 8:19 , K-g1 wouldn't work?

  • I've been really enjoying this fischer series. I LOVE YOU SEAN <3

  • Lol! Thanks, glad you like em!

    Sean

  • Awesome game!

    Tnx a lot Sean

  • nice thx

  • fischer + kasparov > *

  • i love this game of fischers.. what amazes me the most is that the 2 GMs that were commenting on the game and the chess engine fritz wasnt clear on Bobbys combination idea.. that alone says a lot of the late great Robert James Fischer.. excellent video Sean! thanks!

  • No worries, glad you like em! Yes, it's incredible how deep he could think. All the best!

    Sean

  • Yes Sean, I did enjoy that. Amazing that Bobby made 6 knight moves in a row that destroyed whites fianchetto'd bishops fortress around the white King. And to quote you Sean, it was all over. Thx great vid and commentary.

  • great video and commentary!! great vids sean!

  • Hello Sean,

Another great choice on your part; this is my favourite Fischer game. I prefer it even to the so-called "Game of the Century", which is still amazing given Bobby's age at the time.

    Cheers, and keep 'em coming!

  • I was so happy when you began this Fischer series.

Great treatment of this game. Thanks and I'm looking forward to more Fischer commentaries!

  • Sean your analytical style has become perfect- I think- for Class B club players like me.

I found a few of your first vids a little "fast" for me to follow without lengthy pauses. But now you seem to have hit upon an economy of instruction that unravels the mysteries.

Thanks so much for your chess channel- It is currently my favorite.

    Jess

  • I heartily agree.

  • Great! Thanks a lot man. Yes I fell too that I have found the correct balance of depth and fluidity! Very happy my channel is your favourite! More coming soon!

    All the best,

    Sean
