what a fukin retard this guy is, he contradicts himself every other sentence and is just as fukin evil as colombus himself , he probably jacks off to images of dead iraqis while singing the national anthem
Ayn Rand Center are fucking imperialists. Ayn Rand's views on Native Americans weren't based on her philosophy, but rather a product of her times, growing up in the early 1900s. The ARC blindly and IRRATIONALLY follows Ayn Rand's every word without regard to social context. Mainstream Objectivism is a religious cult, and the ARC are its biggest church. P.S. Columbus didn't even discover the New World, that would be Leif Erikson. Read a fucking history book, you morons.
Is this guy serious?? If this is not a satire...then this guy is a racist bigot!!! WOAH... I can't believe such "highly evolved" people can still be so narrow minded.
Columbus day in America makes as much sense as Hitler Day in Israel, after all without him no Holocaust, no Holocaust no sympathy, no sympathy no Israel. If you want to truly celebrate the greatness of western culture there are far more desrving candidates. Columbus wasn't even first. Hell, be probably bought the information from a Norseman in a bar.
Would like to add... it is sad that many lost their lives due to some the expansion of civilization, namely natives of course. However, today, as a native myself, i have access to so many opportunities, i will live longer and be richer than my fore fathers, i can own my business and prosper if i want to. above all, i have more choices available to me then what could be ever dreamed of by our ancestors, all thanks to people taking risks in the past, one of whom is Columbus... Darcy Cardinal
This vid just reeks with BS. Im not here to bash Western civilization, but Columbus surely doesn't represent Western civilization in a positive way. Nowadays people are beginning to see things based on historical accounts and evidence, which is why the bad side of Columbus is coming out. People no longer believe in all those nice and pretty portrayals of Columbus, because thats not who he was.
Christianity brought what? Superstitions, homophobia, a religion based on fear that you'll go to hell for not living a specific way? Organized religion is terrible! The nation was inhabited by savages!?!? Are you kidding me?!?! Native wars were but mere skirmishes that were incomparable to European wars. Europeans were destructive to eachother and to Natives. There is so many other things about this video that are so incorrect and extremely bias.
Western civilization brought philosophy and mathematicians that displaced mysticism!?!? The Mayans were some of the greatest mathematicians and astrologists of their time! Europeans didn't even have the concept of 0 and believed the earth was flat at the time. As for philosophy, most Natives believed that they were one with nature, and had a deep respect for the earth and animals, they believed in natural laws long before the first European set foot here.
"For a civilization that would soon overcome the age old scurges of slavery, war, and forced religious conversion" Thats exactly what Columbus brought!
Read A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies by Bartolome de las Casas. Anybody who believes Columbus should be celebrated after reading that book is simply insane. A first hand account, by a Christian priest, none of this new age crap that portrays Columbus like an angel, but real historical evidence.
There are two extreme sides here: the Ayn Rand crowd and the Howard Zinn crowd. Both of these visions of Columbus are built on ideological and political foundations rather than objective history. I believe the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
Mr. Bowden, this is an excellent presentation. I also watched your 2004 lecture on this subject. I learned a lot and urge others to seriously consider how their views are eroding our country and freedom.
Columbus does not represent the best of Western civilization, he represents the dark side of Western colonization. People should not identify with Columbus in order to value the positive achievements of Western civilization.
I mean, you can frame the "holiday" anyway you please, but it still recognizes Columbus.
Yes, he had courage and made history. So? Mass murders have elements of courage and certainly make history.
imagine a world, where Luther King's ideology and policies are implemented - by force, of course, as there is no other way for it. I think of North Korea and Zimbabwe combined. You endorse it?
This is an intelligent, outstanding presentation as to the true meaning of the celebrating of Columbus Day. If the socialists and communists don't want to celebrate it, thats fine.
Your property is yours, and thats it. This is not white people land or Native land. There is no such thing as a collective right to property based on race. Racist.
Generally speaking, how do objectivists justify/rationalize the genocide of the natives?
Is it a "means to an end" sort of thing? The Europeans were superior, so they have the right to conquer a lesser civilization in order to establish one more preferable?
I'm not saying this is "native land", but there was genocide and theft. It's just curious to me how objectivists tend to not even acknowledge wrongdoing.
Whereas I acknowledge it, and then go about reality in a practical way.
The fact that western civilization was established here is whats being defended. The natives actively opposed it which they had no right to do. The fact that the takeover of the Americas was less than ideal i dont think is the main issue. I think Culumbus would be attacked even if the takeover of the Americas had been done with out so many of the so called crimes. But it was war,and im glad the Europeans won, and my life is better for it.
How did the natives not have the right to oppose the west? They absolutely had the right to defend their land, their culture, and themselves against violnet, unwarranted aggressison.
The fact that the west was successful and we are now here because of that is self-evident. People who say this is "native land" as if we should disband the US and abandon reality are irrational and idealistic.
But at the time of its occurence, the west's aggression was completely illegitimate and barbaraous.
People who condemn Columbus Day are really just outing themselves as enemies of Western liberalism and human greatness. They're usually quietly making a devastating confession of their own personal pettiness and depravity.
That's why this country went to hell. Is because people wouldn't just go out and live their life to the fullest. They're are a digusting lot which I hold in contempt. Then I come to you with which I completely agree.
@PureLiberalRadio wow you guys are really into yourselves arent you?? i feel sorry for you guys, you're all lost in your own delusions, like mindless zombies who look for any self gratification they can find and who are incapable of empathy and understanding , fukin pathetic sad clowns
@eight18 There's nothing zombie-like, delusional, or pathetic about a fundamental philosophy of reason and logic, an ethics of individualism and self-interest, and a politics of liberty and justice. As a a matter of fact...that's the future of the world!
@PureLiberalRadio the fact that you believe your own philosphy so fanatically , without ever questioning it ,shows how deluded your mind is i wouldnt even care what you guys think and believe in but your stupid ideas and philosophy is getting a lot of poor people killed so you fukers better wake up now or we'll violently do it for you
@PureLiberalRadio stfu , philosophies arent real their just tools for the human mind ,wanna know whats real? the multinational companies raping the 3rd world people and leaving their kids starving and they all love to say the same shit you do when they are attacked
@eight18 Philosophy rules the world! It rules you too --- you just don't know it. Multinationals are tools of philosophy too, and all their raping is a product of their intellectual beliefs, and those of the philosophically-mistaken gov't which heavily guides them.
You should view my homepage to learn about a good series of alternatives!
America wasn't "a land of frightened savages" in pre-Columbian days, but it can't be said that many didn't live in fear of more powerful neighbors, like any region of the Earth. There were benefits that were brought by Western Civilization, even if their diseases did bring about the first Holocaust.
You should read his book on this topic. They were freightened, freightened of their entire existence, to them it was anunknowable uncontrolable existance with forces they did not have control over and did not know how to get control over. In order to have the feeling of control over their daily existence they believed in all sorts of spirits and demons that they had to appease and placate in order to get some feeling of control over their lives.
Columbus originally wanted to reach India and accidentally reached America.
I don't think recognizing the wrongdoings of Columbus excludes the idea of celebrating his day to mark the greatness of our civilization. The two thing should not be mutually exclusives, and it's good that it was brought up in this video.
I'm glad that someone had the guts to say the truth, in defiance of all the politically correct propaganda being taught in schools these days. Thank you, Mr. Bowden. :-)
And to think: if Christmas wasn't such a commercialized holiday, I'd probably think it was completely crap!
We should make a version of Santa that represents capitalism in it's fully. The great capitalist who spends one day a year flying around on his genetically engineered reindeer, giving gold bars to productive individuals.
