Used to spend a whole Saturday sometimes at Reading around 1970, 1971. Once someone said that if you bought a carton of milk for the crew, there was a chance of cabbing one at the end of platform 4. They didn't want the milk but let us cab one anyway! Then they rolledl out and put the hammer down, pretty damn fab.
As a kid I'd go to Reading Central to see the 'Westerns'-they always seemed very elaborate diesels.Warships were my first love these came second the e-types of the stock back then-early 70's. Hell, I remember often going to one end of the platforms and placing 2p coins on the rails for the express to come through and flatten out to the size of coke can diameter... It wasn't a good day unless we came back with one! (if you could find it) You could get away stuff like that then. Rights of Passage!
Any Wizzo can floor a tram, and deltic and the rest! have a search on here for 218 499, hellfire 218 trash and acceleration, hydraulics are simply the best! that vid is superb
They have no tractionmotors and all the wheels are coupled. Any Hydraulic will out run any diesel electric or electric loco. D1015 is the best loco in the country and a pleasure to drive! :-)
Hydraulics were the best, and thats not sentimentalism, its fact..westerns were the best of the best once the teething problems were sorted out..trouble was the anti-western region tossers at the BRB had already decided to do away with these beauties in favour of overweight underpowered diesel electric shite, none of which, Deltics excepted, could hold a candle to a whizzo in good fettle, or a warship or hymek come to that..as for HST,s!!! well, just a bloody glorified "bog" unit aint they...
That's some beastie..... A real engine..... Better than the plastic and tin things that litter the railways these days..... God! I'm sounding like my Dad... "Steam was much quicker than that son"!
Just stumbled across this video,I remember when I was about 11 or so being pulled back from Taunton behing 1 of these and a warship "double headed" the western had some sort of problem and was being bailed out by the warship my father said they were making time up as they were going like the clappers to Cheltenham "my hometown" I remember the western as "western reknown" and the warship was "Zebra"
got to love this beauty
