@candymanal Did you read some of the comments below? This has been addressed.
From the standpoint of many ordinary citizens who just happened to be on the sidewalks during Rolling Thunder, this is a parade. It's stuff that happens on the street as you stand on the sidewalk. A protest and demonstration can have a parade... there is nothing demeaning or diminishing about that.
@thepowersportschanne Thanks! I encourage you to move around a lot and not shoot from just one location. It is great exercise and you get a variety of interesting shots. Be aware that police may prevent you from taking certain routes (the Memorial Bridge was closed to pedestrians in 2010 for some reason), so have a good map and lots of flexibility.
Thanks for checking that out. I bought a Canon VIXIA HF21 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder and a Rode Stereo VideoMic Camera-Mounted Stereo Microphone. First time use -- it was set to automatic.
Hi, Bob. Really enjoyed this video. As long time DC area residents, it's great to recognize all the familiar places with motorcycles at them, and you got some nice footage. Best, FunkeyPhilosopher, Allen from open mic Sunday.
(PS, thanks for bringing the mixer and why are my films so dark?)
@FunkeyPhilosopher Hi, Allen... thanks for stopping by! I looked at your White Room video and it definitely could use more light. The exposure on the camcorder may be off, too. What do you use for a camera?
Great video! as a Veteran and a member of a Veteran M/C i appreciate the trouble you went through to film, edit and upload this. I just wanted to make one major clarification.. in many of the Rolling Thunder videos i have watched i keep hearing it refered to as a parade.. this is not a parade, this is a protest. It is a protest to remind the government that we still have thousands of brothers and sisters unaccounted for from Vietnam. We ride so that this will never happen again.
@Creslyn78 Even Shakespeare said, "What's in a name?" I think that the average Joe and Jane standing on a sidewalk watching activities happen in the street will consider that a parade. I certainly intend no disrespect for the purpose of Rolling Thunder, but you can still protest while parading in the street.
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a thoughtful comment!
Thank for this vid. As a Soldier who is currently serving, I would like to ride in Rolling thunder. I don't see any Sport bikes. Is there a restriction?
@Parris04 Thanks for stopping by... and thanks for your service! Every kind of motorcycle is represented in Rolling Thunder, from scooters to custom choppers. You can definitely ride sport bikes and there were many.
Nice job on the video I go down every year but I think 2010 will be my last. Too many cheezy wanna bes who dont even pay respects. Just there to ride. There is supposed to be more than just riding and waving with yourflag draped bike. jeeeze
Libertytreeradio for more videos on youtube. Our Rolling Thunder group friends were at about the middle of the main body in the beginning of this vid. Very hot and very cooool. Ne Copula Nobiscum! MGK/GDW!
Rolling Thunder You can hear their rumble coming You can see them rolling through Though you don’t know where they’re going Or the job they have to do On a mission full of honor, A procession of the heart, They go ride to heal another At a time of sad depart With a heartbeat of compassion See so many stand as one Keep on riding “rolling thunder’ Till your missions finally done Delta Blue
and where- oh where- was our president ??? a man with not one patriotic bone in his body ??? not even in DC for this memorial - what a waste of space is our commander in chief
Thanks for stopping by! However, I've been to several Rolling Thunder events and have never known the president to be at one. I don't think that says any more about this president than it does about the last one.
Rolling Thunder (and this video) have nothing to do with the president, so I will delete any further posts on this subject.
Rolling Thunder has lost it's sense of purpose. It's main and only mission was to bring full accountability for POWs and MIAs of all wars, reminding the government, the media and the public by our watchwords: “We Will Not Forget.” Now it has turned into a lovefest for anybody who ever served. We already have a holiday for that - it's called Veteran's Day.
You are entitled to your opinion and I appreciate what you are saying. However, Veteran's Day is a national holiday for honoring all veterans, while Rolling Thunder is a local event intended to point out the hazards of serving in the military. The purposes of the two may coincide, but is that a bad thing? I was in the Army when being in the military was a dirty word, so a little extra celebration today looks great from my perspective. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your opinion.
Someone once asked me whey I didnt join another branch of the military. This marine is the reason. This SSgt has so much pride and honor. Something that unfortunatly is rare in the armed forces.
Keep up the fight back home and they'll keep up the fight every where else! OOHHRAHH!!! *Salute*
Thanks for posting. I've been for the last 8 years and so many don't understand this or why we do it. You did a great job and hope to have you riding with us next year....=)
Very nice video, but I must point out that it is not a parade, but a protest ride, to fight for our POWs and MIAs that are still out there. The beginning of the protest had Gold Star Moms riding with vip escorts. We were volunteers to escort these women who have lost children in the wars through the years. The Mom on the back of my bike lost her 19 year old son in Iraq last year. I have a 19 year old daughter.. Rolling Thunder was the hardest 4 mile ride of my life...
As a veteran myself, I appreciate the solemn purpose of Rolling Thunder. As for referring to it as a parade, I did the narration off-the-cuff as I was shooting it. I said what popped into my mind at the time Second, pretty much anytime people stand on the sidewalks and wave at activity in the street, that's a "parade" by definition. It might have a deeper purpose than entertainment, but it can still be a parade. Still, I don't mean to minimize the event.
@pvreditor Great commentary, explanation and proper description of the ride. I am glad you clarified it. I thought the purpose was something different, but now I admire it even more. God Bless our Troops and America. We need it now more than ever.
@kamalabiker As the mom of a son serving now in Afghanistan, I sincerely appreciate you escorting the mom who lost her son in Iraq last year. I don't know if it's a protest ride today as much as a Respect Ride for those who've given so much to serve their country and the families they left behind. My son has ten more months. I pray he comes back safely...& all the others serving in far off lands. Again thanks.
Excellent video and audio narration. Thanks for your dedication and time to shoot, edit and post this. I very much enjoyed watching it. It looks like your video has become viral. I emailed the link to my distribution list including some people I know at SUNY Fredonia.
Ha... I'd be happy if it went bacterial! Thanks for the very kind comments. I learned a lot about shooting and editing when I was on the faculty at SUNY Fredonia.
I was in the Math Dept at SUNY Fredonia when you were there - hired to consult and write their new computer science curriculum. I also wrote computer degree programs for Buffalo State, D'Youville, Elon, Niagara CC, Walters State CC, Cecil CC and Mesa CC (where I wrote the world's first community college curriculum in artificial intelligence). We taught LISP programming and Expert Systems to community college students. I retired in 1997 after 37 years of teaching math and computer subjects.
I took a couple of computer classes at SUNY Fredonia around 1978-79: the intro (BASIC) class and an a followup class on Pascal. Then I got hired fall 1979 as a TV engineer in McEwen Hall, working for the IRC department. I left in June 1983 for greener pastures and never looked back... had a great career since then. I still keep in touch with a couple of students I knew from back then... one has kids in college now!
I taught an intro to computer class at Fredonia in 1979-80. A funny thing happened. They gave dept. exams that were very hard and this was my first time teaching the course so they gave me a list of questions to review. The dept. did not tell me they were the actual exam questions. I went over each one in class. Needless to say I became an instant hero to my students when they took the exam. LOL! The faculty member in charge of the exam scolded me and students in the other classes were upset.
Nice coverage of a super event. Please note, however, that this is NOT a parade. It is the 23rd year that Rolling Thunder held a peaceful DEMONSTRATION in DC to keep the politicians reminded that there are still over 1500 of our military unaccounted for and who haven't made it home yet - their families still without final closure and many still clinging to the hope that somehow their loved ones are still alive.
I liked the narration, I was there and you cannot describe the feeling and emotions that run through you throughout the day, it is an amazing experience and each year is different. Thanks for posting, it is great to see that this country still has so many people to support the veterans both past and current
I'm a veteran myself (US Army 1971-1974) and appreciate things that are done for veterans. I thank you for your comment and hope that I can join you in a future Rolling Thunder.
I was there and this guy did a great job capturing the feeling of the event... thanks for the narration... I posted some videos I took from the back seat of one of the bikes... lots of thunder, but no narration on my videos!

Unfortunately, the commentator describes this as a parade.
It is NOT!
It is a protest ride, bringing attention to our governments refusal,
to account for our MIA and POW's.
Military code of honor states, we will never leave a man behind.
None the less, our elected officials, refuse to honor that code.
It's time we all protest, and bring home those, who cannot speak..
