That's so funny, I thought I was the only one who noticed that about so many actors. Another actor that looked funny without a shirt was kirk douglas, and not because he had a big gut but because he's obviously sucking in his gut to look buffed. What really made him funny was he had such a flat ass and always tried to show his body off and he didn't have any ass. Watch Spartacus, or Champion. Champion is so funny when he poses for an artist chick who's hot for him. No ass Douglas.

Back prior to the 1970's, abdominal exercises that produce a "six pack" weren't developed or implemented yet.

So various men considered to be in good shape, still had to suck in their guts when shirtless, and Mitchum was no exception.

@Jcolinsol Mitchum was out of shape compared to the ripped actors of today. Look the Leading actors of the 50's and I think it was true right straight into the 70's. William Shatner, James Garner, Heston, Lee Majors, Nick Nolte, and many others are good examples of leadinng actors who tend to lean more to flabby side. Believe it or not, many of these guys fall under todays weight scale of being obese.

Well, I think that's fairly debatable. Mitchum had a wide ranging career, including periods as a pro boxer. He was mostly definitely fit. Most of the time, the fittest people aren't going to resemble modern actors, because the appearance of modern actors is more aesthetic than utilitarian. You have to look at real people to see what real fitness looks like.

I'd also point out that the bmi doesn't relate to fitness, and that "obesity" isn't a technical term, it's hate speech.
