That's so funny, I thought I was the only one who noticed that about so many actors. Another actor that looked funny without a shirt was kirk douglas, and not because he had a big gut but because he's obviously sucking in his gut to look buffed. What really made him funny was he had such a flat ass and always tried to show his body off and he didn't have any ass. Watch Spartacus, or Champion. Champion is so funny when he poses for an artist chick who's hot for him. No ass Douglas.
@ForeverEmunah You can still get defined abdominals from squats and deadlifts and I'm sure they were invented way before the 70s but bodybuilding and casual general working out wasn't that popular back then so you might have a point.
LOL Notice at the end of the video, theres a video of a chick in red shirt with big boobs, and in a different video Quagmire seems to be looking directly at them! hahaha
@Jcolinsol Mitchum was out of shape compared to the ripped actors of today. Look the Leading actors of the 50's and I think it was true right straight into the 70's. William Shatner, James Garner, Heston, Lee Majors, Nick Nolte, and many others are good examples of leadinng actors who tend to lean more to flabby side. Believe it or not, many of these guys fall under todays weight scale of being obese.
Well, I think that's fairly debatable. Mitchum had a wide ranging career, including periods as a pro boxer. He was mostly definitely fit. Most of the time, the fittest people aren't going to resemble modern actors, because the appearance of modern actors is more aesthetic than utilitarian. You have to look at real people to see what real fitness looks like.
I'd also point out that the bmi doesn't relate to fitness, and that "obesity" isn't a technical term, it's hate speech.
@magicx3434 I reckon it's Cape Fear because there's a scene where he's brought into the police station and is told to take his shirt off and he's clearly sucking his gut in Or the all the other scenes where he has his shirt off. He was probably still a pretty tough guy but I think he drank a lot. Back then people probably didn't expect perfect chiselled gym-honed bodies like Daniel Craig, Brad Pitt etc.
theres another robert mitchum joke in the episode Peter-assment where old Bob Mitchum atually talks to peter threw the TV check it out and put it up on your channel if you like.
no need to thank me just glad to help someone who obviously love bob mitchum as much as me.
Family Guy have an insane sense of perception, I would liken it to Bob Dylan in the early 60's being able to funnel and articulate the public's subconscious thoughts. They are fucking brilliant.
@TheDavelogan I thought this joke hit the mark. If you watch the old cape fear there is a part when he has to take off his top at the police station (I think it is the police station) and you can tell he is sucking in his gut that's why I found it so funny, Mitchum is still a legend though
LOL!! this is one of the funniest clips from Family Guy, ever! I laugh every time XD I'm also a big Mitchum fan, and actually he WAS kind of like that, later in his life. But he certainly wasn't "fat." He was all muscle underneath...there are a lot of people who look deceptively "out of shape" because of their outer bodies, while underneath their muscles are just as toned as athletes. Mitchum did not ever have a pot belly, though...he just looked like he was "holding it in" somewhat LOL

Okay I thought this was funny, but I looked up pictures of Robert Mitchum and he looked in shape to me. Did he get fat in his later acting years or something?
like uk6 said, all these people (ryan, mitchum douglas, lancaster, hayden) were really but naturally strong, they had normal muscled bodies, not like the gym-muscled guys of nowadays, that look like they spent their whole life trying to get their bodies fit.
Personally, i think Robert mitchum had one of the best bodies ever. uk6strings is right, check him out in Cape fear and tell me he's not in shape. i dare you :P
Ric Flair always looked like he was carved out of spam. Some of the old pro wrestlers (Cowboy Bob Orton, Pedro Morales) were just fat slobs with huge pot bellies. And these guys were supposed to be athletes?
Now of course they've gone the opposite direction with the HGH and steroids, and are hyperboliclly buff...
exactly. thats why this clip reminds me of those guys. htey were always bulled as "talented athletes" and "formidable opponents" yet,as you said looked like they were carved out of spam, fat slobs with pot bellies. just like the out of shape in shape guy.
This is completely ridiculous - "out of shape"? What does that mean exactly? Not buff? Check out Mitchum in CAPE FEAR - which was released in 1962 - he's in shape alright. Family Guy stretches too far yet again.
This is so true, why, in all these freaking 50's movies (they're the greatest movies ever IMO (apart from the more recent action movies, most of Nicolas Cage's movies and the transformers movies in particular xD) are they all so in shape, yet out of shape? they're like fit and stuff, but not fit! how else can I explain it... umm.. they have a fat belly but are also muscly? it's more complex than that, and hopefully everyone knows what I'm talking about lol
It's not really complex at all. If you go to the gym twice a day, yet you still eat crap foods and drink beer, you're gonna get muscled yet fat-bellied.
Not necessarily. Depends on how much you're burning compared to how much you're eating. Michael Phelps eats a lot of crappy food and takes in more than 5,000 calories a day.
Dude, Seth MacFarlane has this awesome penchant for vaudevillian stuff like this and it sucks that he doesn't push for more of it. This and "fast talking high trousers" were two of the funniest family guy moments ever.
I can relate to this xD

I saw the actual movie that this parody came from, and laughed at the part where he was sucking his gut in. xD
Back prior to the 1970's, abdominal exercises that produce a "six pack" weren't developed or implemented yet.
So various men considered to be in good shape, still had to suck in their guts when shirtless, and Mitchum was no exception.
