Hornets are usually real protective of their nest. Their stingers do not come off and they can sting you as many times as they feel like it. This is a big nest. but not what I would call a giant hornet. I have seen giant hornets that are about 3"inches long. Hornets will sting you even if you are miles from their nest. The giant ones have a harder exoskeleton and you can feel them crunch under your boot if you can get one one the ground fast enough to stomp one.
