If you want to understand why the shadow looks so dark, remember that the sky is blue because of the sunlight refracting off the atmosphere. Thus, when a shadow blocks light from hitting the atmosphere you have a dark area instead of an illuminated one...
Yeah its a shadow, but its darker there because of the haze in the atmosphere not being illuminated not because of refraction. The sky is blue because of Rayleigh Scattering where blue light is more likely to be reflected downwards, refraction applies to changes of medium whereas rayleigh scattering is to do with interactions with sub-wavelength particles(molecules etc). You were basically right and the guy who filmed it is far below both of us.
