@wwwaaarrrggghhh Well, I've yet to uncover a single peice of evidence. First of all, by 1995, all lighthouses were automated, so the exchange wouldn't have taken place. Secondly, this joke is very very old and retold in several different forms (i.e. changing the name of the ship and the location). Check out snopes. com for "the obstinate lighthouse" for the full backstory.
The following is being transmitted around the Internet as an event that really took place, but it never happened. It is simply an old joke like those found in popular magazines (from the Navy's official website).
Funny video though it never happened. Go to any hoaxbuster site like Snopes and they trace the history of the story back to the 1930s. The joke has been told and retold in many forms.
Actually it's an old joke that the Coastal guard used to poke fun at the Navy, and like stated before, it's been told in different forms for at least 40 years. Besides, no lighthouses had radio crews in 1991, they we're all fully automated over a decade before that.
In WWI, you tell me what would have happened if we had intervened on Germany's side? Couldn't have done anything to, say, impact the outcome of the war, right? All it would have meant was to have another damn Frenchman hiding in New York, biting the hand that feeds it by calling them salauds for their inaction (St. Exupery, etc.)
If Germany would have won WW1 they would have taken the provinces in France that have Iron and then humiliated the french in some way but France would not have ceased to exist.
And also in WW2 the Soviets were the one that defeated the Germans while the Allies meeting only 20% of the german forces and a german morale of:"Defend the east front at all costs and let the allies take Germany so that the Soviets cant extract revenge on us". the Soviets had been making progress in the East all along
Oh and also US never joined the war not even after Pearl Harbor. Hitler actually had to declare war on the "defender of freedom and democracy" before USA took any action.
And also he is right america would never have become independent if it werent for France and Spain.
Well, we did immediately join the war... against Japan. We later joined the war against Germany to help out our good friend Churchill, who, unlike certain allies, wasn't an ungrateful cheese eating surrender monkey.
And you do know that the fourth republic would still be around kissing the Nazi's asses if we hadn't done anything, right?
December 7th was Pearl Harbor. Dec 8th Congress declared war in Japan. Dec 11th the US declared war against Germany and Italy. Seeing as how neither of those nations had attacked the US and that the US still was following the part of the constitution that requires Congress to declare war (NOT the president!), I think they did it pretty fast. Yes, Hitler declared war, but Congress STILL did vote & declare as well. BTW, the USSR WAS part of the allies as well.
The government leadership very much wanted to fight. They took actions to get Japan to attack and they knew Japan was going to attack but intentionally didn't tell the guys at Pearl Harbor. The majority of the people believed the way they had since the nation started, which was that you don't fight people who didn't attack you, especially in Europe. But some Americans went to fight in Europe before war was declared, like the Eagle Squadrons.
Ok, you don't necessarily have to be the first to declare war to join the war. So long as it's understood that you'll be fighting a certain enemy, you've joined the war (albeit unofficially)
This video still makes me laugh. The typical arrogance of the American crew versus a lighthouse.
If played out in the usual manner, the crew would stubbornly refuse to change course even after learning they were heading for a lighthouse, attacking the lighthouse instead while claiming it posed a clear & present threat to their vessel.
After running aground and sustaining damage, the American government and press would use that to beat the drums for the ongoing war against terrorism.
bs22343 > "Yeah, but a french ship would turn around and run the opposite direction after knowing what it was."
Well, I would certainly hope ANY ship (American, French, or whatever) would turn around and run the opposite direction after knowing they were heading straight for a lighthouse.
Sadly, as said before, I suspect that might not be the case for an American ship - and your response certainly does nothing to dispel that suspicion.
Really? Have you ever been on the high seas, or even watched this video? All you have to do is to divert your course 15 degrees to the north, or east. That's what any ship would do, unless it were french, in which case the crew would collectively crap their pants and the captain would order the ship turned around and in retreat.
bs22343 > "All you have to do is to divert your course 15 degrees"
Just playing on your very own words ("french ship would turn around and run the opposite direction"). Too bad you have such a low opinion of the French navy because, to be honest, you probably wouldn't have won your Revolutionary War without support from the French navy and the French people. They were proudly sailing the world's oceans long before your country even had a navy.
We did even the score, by saving their sorry asses from Germany in WWI and WWII, as well as helping them out in vietnam. I think that makes things better, doesn't it.
Wasn't it Rumsfeld who asked a French minister of something, "Do you speak German," and, upon hearing "No," said, "You're Welcome"?
Mkay. If you are refering like most Americans that because of Americans WW2 was OVER. Than you a typicall retarded American. If yes than. 1st: Russia and Polish Soldiers took over Berlin in witch Hitler was at that time in bunker underground and shot himself. 2nd. Americans only fought from Africa to Italy and from Englands way down to Netherlands. Not to say PAcific ocean but thats not in topic. Another. Americans never fought WW1.
Well, well, if it isn't retardo the frenchie (arrogant as hell, and typically thankless). The US initiated Operation Overlord, dumbass, remember that? The liberation of France? Opening another front so that the ruskies could come in from the east, and squeeze Berlin between the allies? Where were the frenchies then? And don't you dare to underplay the significance of the Pacific war. And we did fight all the way to the Elbe in Germany.
The US did fight in WW1, check your history, especially as Pershing had over 3000 troops butchered in the last hours of the war. Post WW1 Congress buried the their report in order to protect Pershing and his egotistical cronies (Not Yank bashing UK had still had troops dying upto 10:59 on 11/11/18. As for this video, bloody funny matey had me in stitches.
Damn skippy, the French Navy sealed Cornwallis' fate at Yorktown when they stopped the British Navy at the Battle of Chesapeake Bay. Something they don't teach here in American text books. BTW, I'm an American and a veteran tanker...so don't even go there.
I would loved to see a tanker with an displacement of more than 400.000tons moving with 15knots hitting an Navy ship straight on. Its a whole lot of kinetic energy with 400.000 metric tons moving with 7.71 m/s ;) The biggest warships are about 100.000 long tons (Nimitz class), and they would get quite a beating.
Have you ever had physics in shool "NorwegicusTheThird"? Where do you think all the kinetic energy from a collision goes? They would need a whole lot more than a now coating afterwards ;) Btw: What is re-lacked?
Haha! This is so typical! This reminds me of something that happens ALL THE TIME in the Persian gulf. Warships think that they own the sea and they dont even use nautical language! I was called up by an warship once and they addressed me as "ship 2000yeards on our north bow". You should think that these incompetent people havent received any training in how the use the VHF. I highly doubt that they had an VHF certificate which is required for mariners.
Though this re-enactment is meant as a joke, this actually happened. They were quoting an actual occurance. The transcripts were released in 1995. It has since occured a second time as well.
This is an actual radio conversation from October 1995 between the navy and Canadian Authorities off the coast of Newfoundland. The radio transcripts were released 10/10/95 by the Chief of Naval Operations.
By the way, I dont believe this has happened in real life. Any modern ship got a ground stabilized ARPA which clearly marks if your target is moving or grounded. If it has it clearly shows that the officers have received inadequate training, but as Ive written in other comments nothing would surprise me with navy ships bullying around on the seven seas anymore
I simply refuse to laugh at this until someone on youtube can be prove it historically factual, for we all know that unless a so called whimsical situation is proven true to laugh at it is sheer madness and would result in our very existance being brought into question!!!! I want names, dates, places and references
Nope, the US Military does. The Air Force, the Marines, hell even the Navy boys are over there. If you are referring to insurgants, I seem to remember a gurella fighting group called la resistance that never died either.
I've watched this like 10 times over, soooo freaking funny..It wouldn't be the same if the guy at the lighthouse wasn't irish, it's the accent I swear!
wait wasnt the USS montana suppose to be a battleship that was faster and bigger and carried 16 x 16" guns? (upgrade to iowa class bb?) well it couldve started in world war 2 then :|
My farther herd this story when he was in the Navy which was the early 1950's. Based on how crude early radar was the story could be true but it's at least a 50 year old story.
This is based on a true story apart from it was a Canadian Lighthouse, the Captain of the US Battleship was so arrogant about the size of his ship yadda yadda yadda.
Don't you just love the fact that the US is the most powerful country in the world, not neccessary the smartest though. lol j/p
The story you're referring to isn't true at all, just a joke/urban legend that's been going around for a while, possibly originating from a Reader's Digest. It started out as a battleship and is nowadays referred to as a carrier. Also, the ship in the video is actually a Royal Navy(British) ship.
1, Montana is a state in the United States of America. 2, USS stands for Untied States Ship. A Royal Navy ship begins with HMS. Depending on whether or not there is a King or a Queen it means either His/Her Majesty's Ship.
Furthermore, this video cannot be true, just a very well made short of an Urban Legend. The reason being is the ship shown at the begining seems to be a fairly updated/new ship. If memory serves me, the last boat in the water with the name USS Montana was a Tennessee class Amrored Cruiser in WWI, and was later named the Missoula. That is NOT a WWI Navy ship.
Yes, those are all definately facts, though I don't understand at all what your point is. If you want another random fact, the giant squid has the largest eyes of all animals.
It happened. And Americans are that arrogant. And stupid. It was outside Spain. You can find the actual discourse off youtube. I just don't have the link.

Good job defeating the joke.

I simply refuse to laugh at this until someone on youtube can be prove it historically factual, for we all know that unless a so called whimsical situation is proven true to laugh at it is sheer madness and would result in our very existance being brought into question!!!! I want names, dates, places and references
Lighten up people, its just a joke
JDLK2005 4 years ago
I heard the same joke, but with the USS John F. Kennedy and a Canadian Lighthouse.

Same as allways Bu... all brains but tons of ammo!!!!!!!!!

This would never happen. Nobody would tell a stationary contact to "alter course" since something stationary has no course.

It seems when it comes to American agenda there all boast, ask them why they lost and will loose every war since WW2?
cycimian 4 years ago
I have a better idea how bout you tell me how exactly taking over an entire country in a week, not once but twice, is losing.
ndsubisonfan 4 years ago
oh, does the US Army have Iraq or Afghanistan?
I don't think so.
JheakrynaKyAlur 3 years ago
Nope, the US Military does. The Air Force, the Marines, hell even the Navy boys are over there. If you are referring to insurgants, I seem to remember a gurella fighting group called la resistance that never died either.

I've watched this like 10 times over, soooo freaking funny..It wouldn't be the same if the guy at the lighthouse wasn't irish, it's the accent I swear!

Thats a Royal Navy Type 42 Destroyer, not the USS Montana, which is (or was?) a US Ballistic Missile Submarine...
EddieHfromBottom 4 years ago
it shows a short clip of a type 42 but the rest is filmed aboard the decommissioned swedish destroyer HMS Småland.

Agreed it is Urban Legend,
It Actualy was a tugboat towing a barge,
And the Captain was Norwegian Did not speak English that well,
So the Warship deployed an attack Helicopter to assess the threat.

wait wasnt the USS montana suppose to be a battleship that was faster and bigger and carried 16 x 16" guns? (upgrade to iowa class bb?) well it couldve started in world war 2 then :|
1337tim 4 years ago
Its not true. Maybe diluted over 50 years from something that could have happened, but it was an urban myth long before this video was made.

My farther herd this story when he was in the Navy which was the early 1950's. Based on how crude early radar was the story could be true but it's at least a 50 year old story.
robertg222 5 years ago
This is based on a true story apart from it was a Canadian Lighthouse, the Captain of the US Battleship was so arrogant about the size of his ship yadda yadda yadda.
Don't you just love the fact that the US is the most powerful country in the world, not neccessary the smartest though. lol j/p

The story you're referring to isn't true at all, just a joke/urban legend that's been going around for a while, possibly originating from a Reader's Digest. It started out as a battleship and is nowadays referred to as a carrier. Also, the ship in the video is actually a Royal Navy(British) ship.
azieruvega 5 years ago
the title does give the punchline away, and i do recall reading this in Digest back in the 80s
julianjwho 5 years ago
1, Montana is a state in the United States of America. 2, USS stands for Untied States Ship. A Royal Navy ship begins with HMS. Depending on whether or not there is a King or a Queen it means either His/Her Majesty's Ship.
Invadercelica 5 years ago
Furthermore, this video cannot be true, just a very well made short of an Urban Legend. The reason being is the ship shown at the begining seems to be a fairly updated/new ship. If memory serves me, the last boat in the water with the name USS Montana was a Tennessee class Amrored Cruiser in WWI, and was later named the Missoula. That is NOT a WWI Navy ship.

its not supposed to be true, its supposed to be funny. although I can see some element of truth in the concept!

Yes, those are all definately facts, though I don't understand at all what your point is. If you want another random fact, the giant squid has the largest eyes of all animals.
