First 1982 was still Diary of a Madman tour they were recording shows with Randy for a live album(that's what they called them back then) Ozzy refused to release the live record extened the Diary tour then went to the Filmor East for two nights recored the Speak of the devil live Album that was a live Black Sabbath concert set and Brad smoked on the live album....making the Black Sabbath album Live Evil sound horrid in comparison (Dio was too good of a singer to pull off Ozzy era songs )
The tone here is filled with brimstone. The guitar pick sounds like it is melting with every stroke. Gillis aldridge sarzo could have made a serious hard rocking band but instead limp old whitesnake circa 1987 formed.
Back then Ozzy was mad. A bit off kilter. There is a certain level of insanity in his voice and stage presence that makes it eerie till this day. He is the madman of rock n roll.
And to all the Brad haters. Get a fucking life. He did a great job filling the shoes he had to fill.
You gotta admit Brad has got some serious sound going on here, Gibson is definetly my only axe but this Fender and Marshall tryst has the sound of fury and beauty...........awesome job Brad!!!!
I don't like Brad that much to be honest... He's a good guitarist but he's not my style. His performance is kinda boring and his doesn't have the emotion i really love in a guitarist. Ozzy must've felt like crap right here... You can almost sense the empty feeling... listen to the fills after the solo during the instrumental part there, Randy used to own that part, but here Brad comes with his Floyd Rose. Don't get me wrong, i love Floyd Rose, but here, along with Brad's tone, it sucks :S
@LPcustom76 Pretty sure the lack of tone is due to the lack of a decent mic recording the sound. Brad always had killer tone. And to say Randy's tone was lacking it makes me think (based on your screen name) that you are biased to the Les Paul. Which is cool, but for a lot of these Ozzy songs, a strat tone is much more appropriate.
Unfortunately ANYONE following Randy was going to take a beating in the eyes of the public the fact that he went on to Night Ranger contributes to the rancor w/o a doubt. On a similar picky bitch note, I loved Dio as a replacement in Sabbath but think his renderings of Ozzy era songs are just too OTT and dramatic...it's fine in his stuff, ahh what can you do gotta play some Ozzy stuff I guess @ the time, just not my cup o tea, RIP RJD..."Ride the Tiger!"
Brad G. filled the spot for the rest of the tour when Randy died, he could havestayed with Oz but went back to his band Nigh Ranger. why??. The shows with Gillis created the Speak of the Devil live album, the best live album i think
@Alexnchains16 I love Brad's playing and have the utmost respect for him. He did a great job learning the tunes on short notice. Speak of the Devil is a great record and Brad shines on it. Just wish he would have played Randy's stuff note for note or a bit closer to what he played. Thats all. Brad is a badass player!
@Alexnchains16 I know Speak of the Devil is all Sabbath. I'm just saying that in general, his playing shines on that record with Ozzy. Not implying at all that he's playing Randy's songs on that record.

Yes, if I can say anything at all about Ozzy, he sure knows how to pick his guitar players. I, personally, like Jake E Lee, but all of Ozzy's guitar players rock!

Same goes for one of my (fallen) true idols Jake E Lee.
I gotta question Jake....is it better to "live" as a guitar god and dwindle? or better to die and have burned bright and live forever?....
I admire Jake E Lee, I wish I had his guts...he's a human being of God.
@Bigstrat2 tell me why? have you heard this solo people wants hear songs how was recorded alter songs is disgusting i dont know if was desition of ozzy or guitar n this guy even is half that was randy rhoads

@maidencd I, TOO, am, STILL, FLOORED, by Brad's guitar playing! I LOVE the way his uses his "whammy" bar on certain songs! I watch THIS and the Bark At The Moon concert, MORE THAN ANY OTHER Ozzy show!
@maidencd He's a great player but a little stale when with Ozzy for my liking- his tone is overly compressed and he relies on the whammy a lot. Jake and Randy both had a very raw sound, loose styles and wide vibrato, particularly Jake, who put every ounce of soul and feeling into each note. Just preference I suppose.
@maidencd i agree, gillis does play good on the live album speak of the devil, all sabbath songs, i love his guitar sound on it to, more crunchy, sounds great, would have liked to see ozzy do an album with gillis before he left to pursue night ranger
back in the 80s and 90s all you had to do to impress people on a guitar was play a randy rhoads song. His guitar playing was so impressive musical and powerful that you never forget it. I still love him.

This was actually an MTV special concert show, My brother had a bootleg of this on a record album back in 85 or so, but it was billed as Randy Rhoads on the sleeve. Brad is a killer player. The solo in this show is still one of my favorite live solos. You can get a dvd of this(which I did) on Ebay. I think its called Live in LA '82. If you do a search on ebay, using keywords speak of the devil dvd. there is a version available. peace RIP- Randy Rhoads, Dimebag Darrell, Cliff Burton...
where can i get a copy of this from and also is there any footage of brad gillis with ozzy from speak of the devil you know the live one where they only did sabbath songs
i'll tell this story, back in '02 or '03 i was in bestbuy and i seen this on dvd & i didnt get it cause i didnt have enough money @ the time. i look back and i wish i would had put it on my credit card. now i cant find it.
Thats not Randy, Its Brad Gilis, Randy died like a week before this show. Brad Gilis guitar is more like a Strat though with a differnt paint job and maybe Humbuckers in it, can't tell Though its more like a strat. I think they sell guitars on musicians friends excatly like that. not sure.
no offense ozzy, but you got a knack for picking guitarists with repetitve habits... brad and his bar, zakk and his pinch harmonics, and randy with his repetitive perfection. RIP randy. never forget
I think the main reason Brad did the Ozzy tour hinged on the fact that Night Ranger couldn't get a record deal. Reportedly, Brad formed a cover band because the gigs were few and far between. It was with that cover band that someone (I've forgotten whom) heard him do Flying High Again, which is what led to him being put forth as a replacement for Randy.
Well, given the same circumstances, you're probably right. Brad went from playing club gigs with Night Ranger and The Alameda County All Stars to doing arenas with Ozzy. I think most people would make the same choice in those circumstances.
But if your band already has a record deal or if you're already big, you might not make that choice. If the Ozzy offer had come about a year later (after Dawn Patrol had been released and was doing well) he may have made a different choice.
Brad Gillis had less than a week to learn Randy's material... he deserves credit for stepping up in an extremely stressful situation and pulling it off. Of course he and Jake can't compare with Randy, although Jake's guitar work on Bark at the Moon is bad ass.
Although Brad could never hold a candle to Randy's playing, Brad is a good player in his own right, he was just thrown on tour with no time to get a solid feel for those songs. Randy just shined above everyone else though.
Lol, randy rhoads with a jock strap. Get off your high horse, Jake had huge shoes to fill when Randy died and he more than delivered. Jake plays Randys songs without missing a beat and could do fucking cartwheels while doing it. Randy Rhoads was a very gifted musician but as a guitar player Jake is much more interesting.
Randy was fantastic but he really wasnt for Ozzy imo, even Jake admits that randy is better than him. But personally I just like Jake more, hes much more innovative and creative in his playing than Randy. Randy did everything by the book but he mastered it, while Jake has a style all his own. As far as live playing there is no competition, Jake is a master showman and blows everybody out of the water.
dude i love jake's sound but i think randy's playing has more technique into it...he takes his riffs and solo's to other levels...true there are alot of guitarists that in some ways have randys technique but he was one of the first to use his classical influences and use them in his heavy metal music...but thats my opinion
What do you mean by more technique in it? Jake's a more technical player than Randy or Zakk, but he tries not to rely solely on that. Ive seen Jake do tricks on his guitar that ive never seen anybody else do.
I just get really tired of people who say Randys a better guitarist just because its f'ing Randy and your supposed to love him.
I am a huge Randy fan and prefer his style but I agree with you completely though. Jake was awesome and just as innovative in a different way..and yes his technique was a little ahead of Randy's.
Gillis sounds like a giant tractor plowing through all of the heavy metal. His sound here is tremendous, listen to the part at 1:53 I can hear the amps breathe a sigh of relief.

I remember this tour. All my friends hated Brad Gillis. Not that he was a bad guitar player, but all my friends and I paid to see Randy Rhoads.

tuckenpower69 2 years ago
Bernie Torme played after Randy died for a few weeks before Brad Gillis was hired.
Rockpig1969 2 years ago
actually someone played for a few shows after randy before brad ( i just dont remember who)
ILoverguitars 2 years ago
Bernie Torme from the Ian Gillian Band was right after Rhoads. I have been trying to find any recording of his shows but I can't find anything.

what guitar is randy playing???
TheFurpus 2 years ago
Thats not Randy, Its Brad Gilis, Randy died like a week before this show. Brad Gilis guitar is more like a Strat though with a differnt paint job and maybe Humbuckers in it, can't tell Though its more like a strat. I think they sell guitars on musicians friends excatly like that. not sure.

no offense ozzy, but you got a knack for picking guitarists with repetitve habits... brad and his bar, zakk and his pinch harmonics, and randy with his repetitive perfection. RIP randy. never forget

there is no replacement for randy
Tasis123gr 2 years ago 5
I think the main reason Brad did the Ozzy tour hinged on the fact that Night Ranger couldn't get a record deal. Reportedly, Brad formed a cover band because the gigs were few and far between. It was with that cover band that someone (I've forgotten whom) heard him do Flying High Again, which is what led to him being put forth as a replacement for Randy.
Kohntarkosz 2 years ago
Are you kidding me? What guitarist would turn down a gig with Ozzy? LOL
hurrydish 2 years ago
Well, given the same circumstances, you're probably right. Brad went from playing club gigs with Night Ranger and The Alameda County All Stars to doing arenas with Ozzy. I think most people would make the same choice in those circumstances.
But if your band already has a record deal or if you're already big, you might not make that choice. If the Ozzy offer had come about a year later (after Dawn Patrol had been released and was doing well) he may have made a different choice.

Brad Gillis had less than a week to learn Randy's material... he deserves credit for stepping up in an extremely stressful situation and pulling it off. Of course he and Jake can't compare with Randy, although Jake's guitar work on Bark at the Moon is bad ass.
jonzguitar 2 years ago 2
brad was not nearly as great as randy
but he sounds way better than jake e lee
jochavez81 2 years ago
Although Brad could never hold a candle to Randy's playing, Brad is a good player in his own right, he was just thrown on tour with no time to get a solid feel for those songs. Randy just shined above everyone else though.
BrianMauk 2 years ago
BRAD GILLIS YOU SUCK
Vik66tor 2 years ago
umm well can you do any better with only a week or so to learn all the songs? oh and they didnt have online guitar tabs back then.
love to see you pull it off.

and we all know Jake E Lee couldn't hold Randy Rhoads jock strap
jdexter67 2 years ago
Lol, randy rhoads with a jock strap. Get off your high horse, Jake had huge shoes to fill when Randy died and he more than delivered. Jake plays Randys songs without missing a beat and could do fucking cartwheels while doing it. Randy Rhoads was a very gifted musician but as a guitar player Jake is much more interesting.

ok that's the ultimate blasphemy I feel sorry for you... No offense but I do feel sorry for you!

dude...jake is a great guitarist but he can not hold the creativity and talent of randy

airdanny791 2 years ago
I honestly thought Jake E Lee was better than Randy.
gonedeep43 2 years ago
Randy was fantastic but he really wasnt for Ozzy imo, even Jake admits that randy is better than him. But personally I just like Jake more, hes much more innovative and creative in his playing than Randy. Randy did everything by the book but he mastered it, while Jake has a style all his own. As far as live playing there is no competition, Jake is a master showman and blows everybody out of the water.
Rankus5150 2 years ago
so randy didnt have his own style?
airdanny791 2 years ago
Ive heard many Randy clones, but have never, ever heard anyone sound like Jake E Lee.
Rankus5150 2 years ago
dude i love jake's sound but i think randy's playing has more technique into it...he takes his riffs and solo's to other levels...true there are alot of guitarists that in some ways have randys technique but he was one of the first to use his classical influences and use them in his heavy metal music...but thats my opinion
airdanny791 2 years ago
What do you mean by more technique in it? Jake's a more technical player than Randy or Zakk, but he tries not to rely solely on that. Ive seen Jake do tricks on his guitar that ive never seen anybody else do.
I just get really tired of people who say Randys a better guitarist just because its f'ing Randy and your supposed to love him.
Rankus5150 2 years ago
I am a huge Randy fan and prefer his style but I agree with you completely though. Jake was awesome and just as innovative in a different way..and yes his technique was a little ahead of Randy's.

Gillis sounds like a giant tractor plowing through all of the heavy metal. His sound here is tremendous, listen to the part at 1:53 I can hear the amps breathe a sigh of relief.
