  • First 1982 was still Diary of a Madman tour they were recording shows with Randy for a live album(that's what they called them back then) Ozzy refused to release the live record extened the Diary tour then went to the Filmor East for two nights recored the Speak of the devil live Album that was a live Black Sabbath concert set and Brad smoked on the live album....making the Black Sabbath album Live Evil sound horrid in comparison (Dio was too good of a singer to pull off Ozzy era songs )

  • Brad Gillis - nice job for having only 2 weeks to learn the set.

  • Brad Gillis had big shoes to fill and he did an ass kicking job...we all know there is only one Randy but B G stepped up....

  • I like how he ends the song with that dive . Unheard of man. If you think gillis sucks your not listening to the sweet phrasing here.

  • The tone here is filled with brimstone. The guitar pick sounds like it is melting with every stroke. Gillis aldridge sarzo could have made a serious hard rocking band but instead limp old whitesnake circa 1987 formed.

  • Brad is the most underrated guitarist EVER! He killed on "Speak of the Devil".

  • Back then Ozzy was mad. A bit off kilter. There is a certain level of insanity in his voice and stage presence that makes it eerie till this day. He is the madman of rock n roll.

And to all the Brad haters. Get a fucking life. He did a great job filling the shoes he had to fill.

  • You gotta admit Brad has got some serious sound going on here, Gibson is definetly my only axe but this Fender and Marshall tryst has the sound of fury and beauty...........awesome job Brad!!!!

  • I don't like Brad that much to be honest... He's a good guitarist but he's not my style. His performance is kinda boring and his doesn't have the emotion i really love in a guitarist. Ozzy must've felt like crap right here... You can almost sense the empty feeling... listen to the fills after the solo during the instrumental part there, Randy used to own that part, but here Brad comes with his Floyd Rose. Don't get me wrong, i love Floyd Rose, but here, along with Brad's tone, it sucks :S

  • I saw this on MTV back then... Back when they played concerts and music videos. Also a time when Metal ruled the world!

    \m/ o.o \m/

  • ah. Welcome back to my life 240p...

  • wha laa.....i dont know......in Navajo.....

  • sick guitar

  • i always felt randy's tone was a little lacking, but brad's is indescribably bad. my ears just vomited.

  • @LPcustom76 Pretty sure the lack of tone is due to the lack of a decent mic recording the sound. Brad always had killer tone. And to say Randy's tone was lacking it makes me think (based on your screen name) that you are biased to the Les Paul. Which is cool, but for a lot of these Ozzy songs, a strat tone is much more appropriate.

  • wow, james hetfield shines on guitar here

  • That's Brad Gillis right? This must be one of the last shows of the Diary Of A Madman tour then

  • why don't they release this damn show? i want a good copy of it

  • @xxblksabbathxx It is available as the Speak of the Devil Live DVD. Pretty good stuff.

  • gillis was great, but my heart will forever be broken and so disappointed

  • Something about Gills tone that isn't cutting thru the mix.

  • I heard in one of his interviews that kids were flipping him off because Randy Rhoads was dead. but he said being on stage still kicked ass

  • I just watched Goodbye To Romance, and you can hear the last notes of it at the beginning of this video.

  • Randy, the legend!

  • 6 bats saw this video...

  • every one of ozzyzs guitar players are champs. rhoads is not the end all be all of the instrument.

  • Brad Gillis was perfect!! Ozzy refused him 'cuz he considered Brad too much old!!!!

  • Unfortunately ANYONE following Randy was going to take a beating in the eyes of the public the fact that he went on to Night Ranger contributes to the rancor w/o a doubt. On a similar picky bitch note, I loved Dio as a replacement in Sabbath but think his renderings of Ozzy era songs are just too OTT and dramatic...it's fine in his stuff, ahh what can you do gotta play some Ozzy stuff I guess @ the time, just not my cup o tea, RIP RJD..."Ride the Tiger!"

  • Rhodes is fucking amazing

  • Brad G. filled the spot for the rest of the tour when Randy died, he could havestayed with Oz but went back to his band Nigh Ranger. why??. The shows with Gillis created the Speak of the Devil live album, the best live album i think

  • He's not playing the riff on the A string correctly....

  • Brad its...fine. But what amazes me, is how Ozzy could recover so fast from that HUGE lost like Randy's one! RIP Him.

  • I love Brad Gillis but if your gonna play Randy Rhodes, you play it as much note for note as possible. His solos deserve THAT much respect.

  • @cfwilkins2003 Cut him some slack, he only had a week or so to learn the songs before they went back on the road.

  • @Alexnchains16 I love Brad's playing and have the utmost respect for him. He did a great job learning the tunes on short notice. Speak of the Devil is a great record and Brad shines on it. Just wish he would have played Randy's stuff note for note or a bit closer to what he played. Thats all. Brad is a badass player!

  • Comment removed

  • @Alexnchains16 I know Speak of the Devil is all Sabbath. I'm just saying that in general, his playing shines on that record with Ozzy. Not implying at all that he's playing Randy's songs on that record.

  • @cfwilkins2003 sorry man, that last comment i made was removed but still ended up on your e-mail, i was a little out of it when i wrote it and didn't realize what vid. i was commenting on

  • brad gillis is good and replaces well , nightranger showq his skills , but live here u can'ty say he sounds better than jake e lee; bark at the moon live is something moe present,more involved;more stylish;;;

  • i think brad gillis was good for this tour. i remember hearing it back in 83 it would give me goosebumps i still remember those good ol days

  • Yes, if I can say anything at all about Ozzy, he sure knows how to pick his guitar players. As pointed out, Brad Gillis can kick ass with the best of them, and obviously, Ozzy knew that, or he wouldn't have had Brad on this tour. I, personally, like Jake E Lee, but all of Ozzy's guitar players rock!

  • he is great, a heavy metal legend, but dio is much better :D

  • @victormlira from the skills as an rock singer yes for sure DIO was better but ozzy is fun to watch buddy.both are great

  • brad gillis was never as great as randy, but he sounds better than jake e lee...

  • well because he wasnt Randy ...and Ozzy wouldve told him to play it note for note if thats what HE wanted...dont knock Brad for that...oh..and a lot of people dont want to hear it like the record...thats a fact...oh..and I dont recall any of the others..Jake E Lee...Craig Goldie..Zakk Wylde..etc...EVER play Randys solos note for note...even Randy didnt...sorry man...u need to lossen up a bit there...its ALL good just appreciate the different styles...

  • The ultimate lineup with Brad, Rudy, and Tommy.

  • Still wish there was a live video of Randy like this

  • Where was this?...

  • He had two fuckin weeks to learn the whole FUCKING SET none of you haters are even capable of even learning a Randy song in a Month so SHUT THE FUCK UP!!

  • @elrockerchido Right on man. Gillis is a phenomenal musician.

  • in his own way, Brad gave the music its all, considering he had to learn the concept of 2 RR albums to make it happen, Brad was still young and "blazin" his way in.

Same goes for one of my (fallen) true idols Jake E Lee.

I gotta question Jake....is it better to "live" as a guitar god and dwindle? or better to die and have burned bright and live forever?....

I admire Jake E Lee, I wish I had his guts...he's a human being of God.

  • who the fuck is the guitar player solo sucks

    get bent

  • @xxcharlysxx LOSER....Brad Gillis also from Nightranger is a fantastic guitarist...!!!!!!!

  • @Bigstrat2 tell me why? have you heard this solo people wants hear songs how was recorded alter songs is disgusting i dont know if was desition of ozzy or guitar n this guy even is half that was randy rhoads

  • Brad Gillis is an awsome guitar player. He has his own style. Can't expect him to copy Randy. Loved the solo. And long live Randy. The best ever!!

  • Brad Gills is an awsome guitar player. He has his own style. Can't expect him to copy Randy. Loved the solo. And long live Randy. The best ever!!

  • nah, he didn't do the decending half-step 4 note muffled thing on the solo, crap.. why?

  • sick job with the solo wow !!

  • randy rhoads ....will live with me forever

  • as a randy fan forever....till death does me apart there will never be another randy but yes he does just fine

  • NICE!!! GILLIS PULLS IT OFF GREAT!!!

  • I WISH THIS VID IS LOUDER!!!!!

  • WAT THE HELL!!!!!!!RANDY RHOADS SHOULD BE IN THIS!!!!!!!!!

  • @wesker8758 he was dead

  • Brad the Whammy Bar Gillis has Whammybar orgasms onstage.

    Don't hate

  • Its a shame that there is not any Footage like this of Randy :(

  • @marcg1z28 It is rumored that Ozzy (SHARON) has secret footage of Randy. There is also one other concert that was pro-shot like this. It was from the Diary of a Madman Tour...

  • Randy Rhoads was the best guitarist ozzy ever had. matter fact he was the best EVER!!!

  • 0zzy without tattoos....

  • he has such an AMAZING voice... I can't believe he had no training!!!

  • @Iluvledzeppelin13 dude no body trains their voice!!!!

  • @IMaiden23 and thats why good singers are so rare.

  • Brad Gillis is the god of trem....

  • they couldnt ge t a bloody fucking recording like this with randy but after he dies and they got brad..

  • ozzys voice is so prime here.

  • @neurocosm so true!! he has that perfect metal voice, with a slight english accent! FUCKING PHENIOMIAL

  • Ozzy sounds great here!

  • i know i prolly sound stupid, but ok so after randy died did brad jst like sbstitute till jake e. lee came along or was he rlly ozzy's guitarist for a while, R.I.P. RANDY RHOADS

  • @guitarsbunch347 Yeah, he filled in for a while as did the guitarist (and husband) of Pat Benatar. Both are good players. These guys came from bands whose image did not fit Ozzy and their music was not as heavy. Back in the day, we thought it was an odd match but the guys could play.

  • @calbeza I didnt know Niel Geraldo (pat Benetars husband) filled in. He is great!

  • @guitarsbunch347 Just a few shows. Nught Ranger's album was about to come out so he was already apart of that

  • it sounds so cold without randy, i mean, brad is a good player but his tone and feeling are just different

  • i know there has got to be a decent amount of Randy footage somewhere. i just know it but if it will ever be released eh we shall have to see

  • for having to follow in the footsteps of randy brad did a great job im just surprised ozzy didnt keep him

  • @rocknrollrebel80 Brad said no because night ranger was his band and thier debut album was about to come out. Besides, Jake is the best guitarist Ozzy had if you ask me. He is a beast!

  • brad gillis SHREDS.

  • shame the video stutters more times than my retarted cousin

  • Brad Gillis seems very underrated. He kicks ass in this entire concert.

  • @maidencd agreed!

  • @maidencd listen to the solo of dont tell me you love me or rumore in the air. Brad is awesome

  • @maidencd Amen. Can you imagine trying to fill that role? Impossible. And you gotta put up with the utter disbelief, astonishment from your band members, and disappointment from fans who bought tickets to see Randy. Super super stand up guy. Not to mention, he fking rocks. Listen again to "you can still rock in america"-- Gillis is a superstar.

  • @maidencd I, TOO, am, STILL, FLOORED, by Brad's guitar playing! I LOVE the way his uses his "whammy" bar on certain songs! I watch THIS and the Bark At The Moon concert, MORE THAN ANY OTHER Ozzy show!

  • @maidencd - Not to mention it could not have been a walk in the park trying to fill Randy's shoes.

  • @jjc1026

    understatement of the tri-decade

  • @maidencd not to mention he learned all the songs in less then a month

  • @maidencd He's a great player but a little stale when with Ozzy for my liking- his tone is overly compressed and he relies on the whammy a lot. Jake and Randy both had a very raw sound, loose styles and wide vibrato, particularly Jake, who put every ounce of soul and feeling into each note. Just preference I suppose.

  • @maidencd i agree, gillis does play good on the live album speak of the devil, all sabbath songs, i love his guitar sound on it to, more crunchy, sounds great, would have liked to see ozzy do an album with gillis before he left to pursue night ranger

  • @maidencd i agree he is amazing on guitar

  • back in the 80s and 90s all you had to do to impress people on a guitar was play a randy rhoads song. His guitar playing was so impressive musical and powerful that you never forget it. I still love him.

  • would be much better if the video didnt freeze so much

  • Gillis had no choice the record label told him he was in period because he worked for them not ozzy!~

  • good guitarist, not quite randy but very fucking good

  • Nobody plays "base" unless he's a baseball player..musicians play BASS

  • In my opinion, THIS and the Bark At The Moon show (from Salt Lake City) are, really, the ONLY two shows anyone needs from Ozzy.

  • dont for get the ozzfest

  • You are missing Randy shows that no one saw.

  • You're right! Fortunately, I've got RARE bootleg footage and an After Hours performance (on VHS) of Ozzy performing with R.R.

  • Lucky.

  • I remember this show, randy should have doen it too. I wish sharon would sell a good version of randy live...

  • Uhh- Randy was Dead at this point, thats uh why brad gillis is playing guitar.

  • oh dude, need to read my UHH comment again. randy should have done it , lik euhh , too bad he was already dead... anything else u want to know about him , let me know ..

  • Ozzy Fckng RULS!!!!

  • Is this Bob Daisley on guitar?

  • no its brad gillis

  • Brad Gillis

  • actually rudy sarzo is playing base, brad is on 6string

  • This was actually an MTV special concert show, My brother had a bootleg of this on a record album back in 85 or so, but it was billed as Randy Rhoads on the sleeve. Brad is a killer player. The solo in this show is still one of my favorite live solos. You can get a dvd of this(which I did) on Ebay. I think its called Live in LA '82. If you do a search on ebay, using keywords speak of the devil dvd. there is a version available. peace RIP- Randy Rhoads, Dimebag Darrell, Cliff Burton...

  • @skinsects yep and it was missing 3 songs I dont know beleiver and Flying high again.I had gotten mine around 1985 too at a record convention.

  • I remember this tour. All my friends hated Brad Gillis. Not that he was a bad guitar player, but all my friends and I paid to see Randy Rhoads.

  • this is the one of the album

  • Randy is the best guitarrist ever!oh and trujillo suck's I realy hate It....I hope necer play again whi ozzy!

  • where can i get a copy of this from and also is there any footage of brad gillis with ozzy from speak of the devil you know the live one where they only did sabbath songs

  • i'll tell this story, back in '02 or '03 i was in bestbuy and i seen this on dvd & i didnt get it cause i didnt have enough money @ the time. i look back and i wish i would had put it on my credit card. now i cant find it.

  • randy. brad gillis, bernie torme, jake e lee, zakk wylde, joe holmes

  • it´s brad gillis.. he played directly after randy died (R.I.P) after him... there came Jake E. Lee (i guess)... and so on...

  • Bernie Torme played after Randy died for a few weeks before Brad Gillis was hired.

  • actually someone played for a few shows after randy before brad ( i just dont remember who)

  • Bernie Torme from the Ian Gillian Band was right after Rhoads. I have been trying to find any recording of his shows but I can't find anything.

  • thats not randy randy was way better man randy was killing in a accident =( R.I.P

  • who is the guitarist

  • brad gillis

  • RANDY ISNT IN THIS He died

    R.I.P. I LOVE RANDY FTW

  • no way ozzy didnt over dub .hes never sounded better live .

  • dat is the nightranger guitarist!!!!! stop sayin its randy randy is better than THAT!!!!!

  • THIS NOT RANDY PEOPLE! RANDY IS DEAD!

  • what guitar is randy playing???

  • Thats not Randy, Its Brad Gilis, Randy died like a week before this show. Brad Gilis guitar is more like a Strat though with a differnt paint job and maybe Humbuckers in it, can't tell Though its more like a strat. I think they sell guitars on musicians friends excatly like that. not sure.

  • sick bassist!!! awesome stuff!

  • brad g. was one of the most wasted gutarist ever..had way to much talent for night ranger

  • Agreed

  • Agreed here as well.

  • WTF ? 1:27 skips

  • Brad Gillis.

  • whos playing guitar

  • thats isn't jake on the guitar is it :S

  • no offense ozzy, but you got a knack for picking guitarists with repetitve habits... brad and his bar, zakk and his pinch harmonics, and randy with his repetitive perfection. RIP randy. never forget

  • thats STYLE, not repetitive habits

  • he just RUINED this song in this live performance i dont see why anyone would want to watch DISGRACE this songs great name!!!!!!!!

  • wtf are you talking about

  • is this the one in the tribute album?

  • no its not. the one on the tribute album actually had randy in it. lol

  • there is no replacement for randy

  • I think the main reason Brad did the Ozzy tour hinged on the fact that Night Ranger couldn't get a record deal. Reportedly, Brad formed a cover band because the gigs were few and far between. It was with that cover band that someone (I've forgotten whom) heard him do Flying High Again, which is what led to him being put forth as a replacement for Randy.

  • Are you kidding me? What guitarist would turn down a gig with Ozzy? LOL

  • Well, given the same circumstances, you're probably right. Brad went from playing club gigs with Night Ranger and The Alameda County All Stars to doing arenas with Ozzy. I think most people would make the same choice in those circumstances.

But if your band already has a record deal or if you're already big, you might not make that choice. If the Ozzy offer had come about a year later (after Dawn Patrol had been released and was doing well) he may have made a different choice.

  • Brad Gillis had less than a week to learn Randy's material... he deserves credit for stepping up in an extremely stressful situation and pulling it off. Of course he and Jake can't compare with Randy, although Jake's guitar work on Bark at the Moon is bad ass.

  • brad was not nearly as great as randy

but he sounds way better than jake e lee

  • Although Brad could never hold a candle to Randy's playing, Brad is a good player in his own right, he was just thrown on tour with no time to get a solid feel for those songs. Randy just shined above everyone else though.

  • BRAD GILLIS YOU SUCK

  • umm well can you do any better with only a week or so to learn all the songs? oh and they didnt have online guitar tabs back then.

love to see you pull it off.

  • and we all know Jake E Lee couldn't hold Randy Rhoads jock strap

  • Lol, randy rhoads with a jock strap. Get off your high horse, Jake had huge shoes to fill when Randy died and he more than delivered. Jake plays Randys songs without missing a beat and could do fucking cartwheels while doing it. Randy Rhoads was a very gifted musician but as a guitar player Jake is much more interesting.

  • ok that's the ultimate blasphemy I feel sorry for you... No offense but I do feel sorry for you!

  • dude...jake is a great guitarist but he can not hold the creativity and talent of randy

  • Jake E Lee blows away ZAKK and Brad Gillis

  • definatley

  • I honestly thought Jake E Lee was better than Randy.

  • Randy was fantastic but he really wasnt for Ozzy imo, even Jake admits that randy is better than him. But personally I just like Jake more, hes much more innovative and creative in his playing than Randy. Randy did everything by the book but he mastered it, while Jake has a style all his own. As far as live playing there is no competition, Jake is a master showman and blows everybody out of the water.

  • so randy didnt have his own style?

  • Ive heard many Randy clones, but have never, ever heard anyone sound like Jake E Lee.

  • dude i love jake's sound but i think randy's playing has more technique into it...he takes his riffs and solo's to other levels...true there are alot of guitarists that in some ways have randys technique but he was one of the first to use his classical influences and use them in his heavy metal music...but thats my opinion

  • What do you mean by more technique in it? Jake's a more technical player than Randy or Zakk, but he tries not to rely solely on that. Ive seen Jake do tricks on his guitar that ive never seen anybody else do.

I just get really tired of people who say Randys a better guitarist just because its f'ing Randy and your supposed to love him.

  • I am a huge Randy fan and prefer his style but I agree with you completely though. Jake was awesome and just as innovative in a different way..and yes his technique was a little ahead of Randy's.

    Matt

  • Gillis sounds like a giant tractor plowing through all of the heavy metal. His sound here is tremendous, listen to the part at 1:53 I can hear the amps breathe a sigh of relief.

  • Ozzy sounded great in this day and age!

  • damn it !!! its not randy1!! hes the originall and only he can play this god damn song!!!

  • Rudy Sarzo must be Heavy Metals hired gun, because didn't he play for Whitesnake as well as others I can't think of?
