Believe it or not, Buffy Sainte-Marie was born in either 1941 or 1942 ~ something I can hardly believe. And she's still appearing regularly, Canadian venues especially but she does get down to the USA. If anyone is up in Northern California ~ she'll be in Grass Valley on August 13th.
Kellett kábé 40 év, hogy rájöjjek, miért érint meg ez a dal, és ma jöttem rá, hogy ez egy magyar népdal angol szöveggel, és az angolok maguk soha nem érthetik, csak a szövegét:-)))
Seeing someone perform a song live gives you insight into an artist in a way no recording ever can. I saw Buffy Sainte-Marie live in 1970 and it was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my teen years. Her vibrato, perhaps off-putting to some, is unique and perfect for the soulful singer and writer she is. When she sang Universal Soldier the entire crowd was frozen into silence by sheer power of her voice, heart, and lyrics. I love her exuberant version of the Circle Game.
I dislike this song, but only because I think Circle Game is a Joni Mitchell song and shouldn't sound so exuberant. Had I never heard Joni Mitchell sing this song, I would love it, but I did, so I don't.
@Tanglephish I love this song. I first heard it in our library in 1966, about two years before Joni Mitchell recorded it. Love Joni's version also, she's my favourite singer.
Back in '74 my mom was vigorously trying to decipher the lyrics to this and asked my sister and I to help. (She must've been desperate--I was only in kindergarten and understood very little of the lyrics.) So last year I stumble upon this song again, 35 years later, and I tell my mom, "I finally know the lyrics to that song you were wondering about back in '74". She had no idea what the hell I was talking about.
"There’ll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty before the last revolving year is through." Quite prophetic, considering that "the boy" Joni wrote this for was Neil Young, who had penned "Sugar Mountain" to express how bummed he was about turning 20.
@Seasass It was 21, the age of majority in Canada, or, as Joni calls it, the praries. You have to give Neil poetic license. The "bummed" wasn't about his age, but his no longer being allowed into a teen club to play with his band. His folk singing carreer commenced. HIs girlfriend could go to the club as well, and, if anyone knows anything bout Neil and girlfriends, he can, like Byron, create a theme for Sophocles from his girlfriend doing something without him. Oh, he did. Sugar Mountain.
@barbj7121 only Buffy is covering it - so not one of Buffy's songs. and actually I hate this version it loses all the bittersweet that the original artist, Joni Mitchell, intended
@UpstairsMaid. You hate this version? Well, that's all right. It's buffy's version. That's why it's refered to as a "version", "variation", or "innovation" of a theme from the original composition. That's what music is suppose to do. And that is why those who comtemplate what HEAVEN may sound like always miss the point that music is not in the notes; the idea is between them! Just as The Muses designed them.
@Atomank68 and the muse for this song was joni, and whem she sings it she infuses it with the bittersweetness of regret and loss of innocence as she intended. Buffy sure can sing, but the soul of the song is lost.
i have been listening to her since i was a baby, my father gave me this song and i have been happy to give it to my 10year old daughter now, life is just as joni and buffy say it is, round and round. i am happy to share it with my child.
