  • Really nice, I really want to be a programer but I don't have any good start, though I'm learning C at school right now.

    (And I'm almost 16, so I'm not sure how this is going to turn out...)

  • @MrGmodlol61 Wow C's your first language? They didn't teach me C until 2nd year of university, and I'm still not a big fan of manual management in a language with no built in encapsulation.

    If you can get C under your belt, you can learn almost any language.

    If you want to be a hobbyist/indie game developer I'd advise you to learn Object Orientated Programming like Java, C#, Flash Actionscript 3.0, (though admittedly the old project above was GML).

    Or a web developer: PHP/Python.

    C++ is an industry standard. Being so low level, C++ one of the most powerful, but it requires you to manage your own memory, pointers and garbage collection.

    Many successful indie developers use Object Orientated programming (rather than multi-paradigm c++).

    E.g. Bastion was written in C++

    Minecraft was written in Java.

    I've made two mods for the latter (Google keep inventory on death and resource detector)

  • @glider521al Actually, Bastion was written in C#, that's the main reason I want to learn C#, because that game was written in it.

    But what exactly is multi-paradigm? And isn't C++ Object oriented?

    For example, what program was Fez created with? I've been very curious to that one, I mean, is it's engine a 2D one or a 3D one even?

    For your information I'm in the process of making much better games, I'm in University of Melbourne 3rd year software systems major

    I know Flash AS3, Java, web authoring, Python, Haskell and C. Once I graduate this year, I'll be starting up a game development company with some friends

    So how about you check the posting date and be a bit more mature next time.

    Yeah I know, it was far more awesome, with a full campaign and a better level editor.

    However Nintendo sadly suspended its development with a cease and desist

    (though it can still be downloaded from third party sites).

    The risk of making fan games, is that you may be asked/forced to take down your creation, on the very whim of the franchise owners.

    One of the many reasons why I discontinued work on this particular project.

    This video shows the editor in an early stage of development, and the recording quality sucks because I only had access to Fraps at the time.

    This project is over 1.5 years old anyway.

    Next time before you troll: look at the date, give constructive criticism

    or go jump into lava!

    I know it's not the best level editor out there, but this was discontinued 1.5 years ago, when I was an amateur programmer. I hope to make far better and more original games, (once I graduate from Uni this year).

    If you read the comments of people who tried it, most people said they enjoyed it.

    So in the future know that just because something doesn't meet your expectations,

    It doesn't mean it "sucks shit" :)

    BTW I don't claim to have made the only level editor out there.

    The largest Mario fan game project I've ever seen developed is SMBX (Super Mario Brothers X), with plenty of ideas from the fan community, implemented as gameplay and editor features.

    Unfortunately that got shut down, when Nintendo requested that he remove it :(

    There's also Super Mario Flash.

    Good hunting, have fun in whatever one you choose to use.

    I think you misunderstand what required liquid level does.

    The required liquid level is the height to which water/lava/poison water

    sinks/rises to when the level starts.

    It can change dynamically in game;

    when the player hits a liquid level crystal (see switches) the water/lava/poison water level rises to the position of the crystal

    As for creating land. All you need to do is place tiles (solid markers are placed automatically by default)

    I've got gamemakerPro8, and found that the way they implement the automatic game save format is incompatible with the old save files, that are generated from exes made with gamemaker7 (so the source won't be of much use to you)

    Thankfully I created a backup text-based format (.mce) that was used in the last released versions.

    Maybe I'll extend MC one day, but I need to complete other projects. My goal is to be a game developer and for that I can't rely on a single fan game.

    I've got FRAPS now, so I may start doing a video series on the best user created levels each week, if there's enough interest.

    I'm also thinking of keeping an archive of the best levels at my website.

    Making Level editors for Mario fan games is becoming very competitive, and I've been inactive for a few months; due to other commitments including uni...

    so I'm thinking of stepping down.

    I'll still post updates, if I have time, and depending on how many people are still interested.

    I'm currently working on another games project known as droid grids, which will be in flash (AS3 takes alot longer to code in than GML)

    Unfortunately it was built using gamemaker, which utilizes Directx.

    Directx is a multimedia interface specifically made for windows only.

    No promises, but once I'm done with droid grids (a flash game project I'm currently working on), I may make the survival mode in Flash.

    To be honest I'm not sure when I'll get around to making a new version.

     I'm working on a flash games projects known as droid grids at the moment (Flash AS3 takes alot longer to make games with than gamemaker).

    In addition to this I have my studies at university + I really need to give my existing website a major facelift...

    I haven't forgotten the ideas, people have put forward...but the first thing that would need to change is the save format to incorporate more levels.

    Go to "transport"

    -Place two pipe passages (one for the destination and one for the entrance)

    -Middle click one of the pipe passages and select "link to..."

    -select the passage you want to link to (now higlighted in red)

  • Lunar Magic is better, but it uses ROMs. I don't have SMW so I can't legally download ROMs. This editor is still great!

    + There are plenty of other 2D Mario fan games that have been around for years, and Nintendo haven't complained about any of them.

    + In their FAQ they didn't explicitly say that fan games were not allowed.

  • I downloaded the file it ended up as a WinRAR file, you know with the stack of books for the icon. Where do I go from there? I can't actually load the editor, I click on the folder and it gives me one folder named .. and another named Mario Constructor, but none of them have the level editor. Please help?

  • You don't need to install gamemaker, this is a stand alone application.

    What to do:

    1) Download it to a windows computer

    2) Right click on the file and "press unzip all"

    3) Double click on the .exe (the gold mushroom icon)

  • question. since you're good at this stuff. im making a game maker 8 game and a need a block that my monkey can hit for a power-up. im still stuck on the coin one too because when the monkey collides with the question block, he gets thousands of points and when I take off relative, he goes back to 10 points only and stays that way. I'm done with normal coins just need help with power ups and coin blocks.

    Part of the motivation behind this project was to make people who marginalized gamemaker and its scripting language eat their own words.

    There are a few programmers who snobbishly refuse to recognize GML as a programming language...

    in my opinion its the end product that matters.

    Special thanks to Shigeru Miyamoto the genius behind the original Mario games :)

    and Nintendo for allowing certain fan games to co-exist.

  • It could be a while before the next version because I'm currently spending my time learning flash.

    But when I get back I'll try and implement throwable shells and custom controls, amongst other things.

    I'm also continuing moving a way from gamemaker's default save and using an encoded text based format more (just in case I ever find the time to make a flash version)

  • Your game is much great but, have one glitch that i find, if you hold the jump button you "fly" and jump at however time, tipe you jump, fall on lava, and can jump again and you hold the button and you fly high...

  • That should not happen with shift

    Are you referring to 1 in PlayTest mode?

    In such a case the player is meant to "fly" around the level, so that the maker can quickly access other areas.

    Once you Publish the level, the user will only be able to jump using Shift and they can't "fly"

  • All you need to do is:

    1 Go to the Section menu

    2 Set the "initial liquid level" to a negative number

    3 Set the "potential liquid level" to a negative number (this is the height that the liquid sinks to)

  • also include: Apocalypse mario( Most advanced stage) Keys: - Space = Tornado - X = Earthquake - C = Tsunami - V = Meteor Storm - A = Blizzard - S = Intense Heat Wave - D = Giga Thunder Storm - F = Intense Solar Storm For the solar storm, mario sends a huge flame engulfing the whole screen wiping out everything except the land mario's standing on.

    over the holiday I'm going to be trying to learn flash

    so I'm not sure how much time I have to work on the editor but I will be back.

    When I do get back I won't be able to implement that many of your suggestions in the next version, because I'm going to need to work on upgrading the save format (text based) and start working on survival (finally, if not the version after).

    Anyway I've got to study for my exams until the 27th

  • I got some suggestions for new enemies:

    - Spike Shelled Koopa

    - Goombas than can breathe fire

    - Metallic Dragon that slashes you with its wings and breathes fire

    - Piranha plants that can explode destroying the pipe it's in

    - A fake coin that explodes when you touch it make sure you can't distinguish it from regular coins :D!

    - a mushrooms that tries to eat you

    - goombas that cause earthquakes

    - a fake starman that kills u in 1 hit make sure you can't distinguis it from regular starmen

    - Add more platforms like the ones from SMW

    - Add pipes that can shoot bullets

    - Add pipes that can shoot fire

  • For v1.8, put: - Custom Starman Music - More Bosses - New Powerups like Swordshooter, or Super Fireball Mario - Bowser should have more moves like shell spin, super ground pound, etc. - More types of artillery - Custom enemies like koopa's that drop bombs, or goombas breathe fire - Mario should be able to go in tanks, fighter jet planes, etc. - Put more hazards like the spinning spike ball in SMW - Add more characters like Wario, Luigi, etc. - Add an overworld map

  • You can just right-click on the fireball not the axis. :)

    P.s. within a week or 2 comes the biggest update yet:

    * Special effects (Snow, hail and fog)

    * More Backgrounds (including animated ones, and the ability to change sky gradients)

    * Ability to have your own custom music (upto 5 songs)

    * More Scenery objects

    * An enhanced playtest mode

    * New placable objects

  • Okay I've found 2 alternative mirrors (which to the best of my knowledge work) and have uploaded a version 1.6

    Featuring: * Additional gameplay glitches fixed * New text based MCE format for swapping levels between levelsets

     * Vines grow gradually from blocks SMW style * Dry bones (2 types have been added) * All the features of 1.5.2 and below.

    If there are problems with the mirrors please tell me which ones and I'll continue my long crusade to find a new one.

  • Look you're really trying my patience.

    Did you decompress the file (a.k.a right click unzip)?

    Did you READ THE HELP SECTION in the game?

    There is a difference between publishing your level to .mct format (so you can edit your level later) and publishing your level to .mcl format (so that people can't edit it).

    Also, remember to place invisible solid markers at the edge of tile areas for walls and floors.

    For more tips PLEASE just read the instructions in the help file.

  • The editor does work (read the other comments).

    are you running windows, with a reasonably fast computer?

    Try adjusting your graphics card settings ( if hardware acceleration is too low it can mean your computer won't run GML programs).

    Go to control Panel>Display settings>advanced settings>Troubleshoot
