@Th33M33 From the Ubuntu website: "From IBM to Google, Firefox to Wikipedia – some of today's best software is based on an open-source model. Shared efforts. Shared principles. No cost." AND "It's managed and funded by Canonical. Canonical is the number-one Ubuntu services provider. Companies can choose to receive expert training, support or consultancy for a fee that goes towards the continued development of Ubuntu." Hope that answers your question :-)
I only wish that someone would design a high-end graphics API for Linux. Maybe then we could get some games coming to the Linux platform. I use Windows primarily for the ability to play games... Oh, when, when will the underdog ascend to its throne?
Thank you for the informational video :-) One problem i can not get it How can i chat and brows at the same time on the screen ?Like you can do with windows, you have tabs at the bottom with what you are looking at.Anybody know how you can achieve this ?

@piaaMRBASS Basically, when you switch to Linux, you will need to find alternatives to the software you use on windows. For example, iTunes = Banshee, fl studio = LMMS + Audacity + Ardour, Real Player = VLC, Sony Vegas Pro = Kdenlive, WinRar = preinstalled, WinFF = ffmpeg, cool edit pro?, bittorrent = qbittorrent, k-lite = preinstalled, avast = no need because no virus on linux, adobe products = Not available. Netgear USB wireless adapter = Windows driver wrapper. Hope that helps. :-)
@piaaMRBASS or just run WINE a program on linux that allows you to use windows apps or just dual boot which is supper easy to do. just insert the cd or usb and click dual boot instead or standard single operating system

This logs me out everytime I open something with flash usage like Farmville. -_-....It wasnt doing this to begin with. Sucks not being able to use Unity 3D.
@LivingInEnvy That's weird, but Ubuntu is known to have issues with certain hardware. If you haven't already you can submit the bugs that you've been having. I've experienced some on Ubuntu 10.04 with old Pentium 3 PCs where the gnome panel would disappear at random times.
@dg14813 I may have been able to fix it. I was able to open several flash demanding windows without a crash surprisingly. It may be related to Unity 5 which I had previously worked with. I tried installing it to fix the Unity 3D issue, and it only partly installed since it looks the exact same but might have filled in whatever was missing.
Wanna get an alternative Linux OS to run alongside Windows 7. Bought another internal hard drive to install and use it on. Been doing plenty of research on various distributions. Looks like either Linuxmint or Ubuntu, not which one to go for. No point putting both on hard drive since they seem so similar. So what would anyone suggest is best? Many thanks. I'm only 14 and new to anything outside of windows
@Mochimoish My cousin has had all 3 and he recommends Mac (not iOS as you said). If you want to buy a gaming machine, though, you should get a PC with Windows 7.
I really hat unity... so much in fact that I rather use 10.10 rather than downloading the latest version, it makes my pc feel like its running Windows Vista, but after watching this vid I'm actually considering it since Ubuntu is my favorite distro and I rather not change. Anyone can actually say a good word about it?
@benjaminmomoney Oh boy it is, better than windows and it looks gorgeous on my screen also, at the beggining you will feel a little be kind of lost using it but the feeling goes away really quick.
Thought I changed to LinuxMint12 too (just for out of the box features) I have to say that Ubuntu is really easy to use/configure and that it is going in the right direction. For example me thinking about purchasing a tablet PC I would be deeply interested in an tablet with Ubuntu on it. They are concentrated on inventing new design etc. Stability will come soon enough --> Do NOT abondon Ubuntu!
Unity has gotten a lot of undeserved flack. As a gnome 2 and kde user I thought unity was only good for my mini laptop, but as I got used to it it's now my desktop too.
A lot of the critiques it got have been fixed (opening f.e. a new terminal when one is already open) and the experience as whole is awesome.
The only thing I don't like is actually the software centre. It's too bulky, commercial and apple-like. Fortunately I can always install synaptic and use apt-get from the terminal.
@Xbox360fanboyer I never said anything about 7, i said Vista is a piece of shit, and everyone knows it, luckily enough for me i have enough money to buy Microsoft OS, but choose not to because it's shit, but instead get it for free, because i refuse to pay £100+ for a piece of shit of an operating system. I own a Mac, own W7, and owned Vista & XP.

Well honestly speaking i like ubuntu and windows. But since the age of 6-7 i have been using windows and have tried ubuntu. The only problem with ubuntu for me is that i am not a geek and in case anything gets wrong i can not fix it in ubuntu.Dont thick i am a ubuntu hater because i like ubuntu but windows is a OS i like and works for me great.Even after the uefi lockdown of windows 8 i will be using windows as the only os becase it has more application support and i can understand it properly.
@eeshanmulye12 That is quite some valid points that you've got there. I do think you should move right along with Windows, since it's what you're used to.
But if you have interest in Linux or Ubuntu in general, which I believe since you've brought your comment to this video, I would encourage you to have a 2nd PC with some flavor of Linux, since it does pay off getting the grips of what I believe is the superior OS for desktop computing.
Written from my beloved laptop with Linux Ubuntu 11.10
Thank you so much for the video! I just downloaded Ubuntu and I'm loving it! I've been using it for 2 hours now and I have to say it's a very friendly OS. There's lot of stuff to learn, of course, but it's ok, challenge accepted! :D
Thank you so much for this , great review but i have a litlle problem. :/ I am greek so i really need to be able to type with greek letters (α,β,γ,δ,ε,ζ...etc). However i can't seem to change the language on ubuntu. I can change it to chinese for some reason though. All the menues and stuff are in greek but i can't type greek. Please help.
(in case you were wondering how i found the greek leters for this messege , im using windows XP right now)
in my opinion, panels were the shit. the full screen is nice but i hate that all the options are always at the top even if its not full screen. If they worked panels back in and changed the menus always at the top it would be the single greatest os ever
@DW45050 I really don't think I'm going to try Linux of any kind again. I find that Windows is fine for my needs. I have at least one program I have over $1800 tied up in and it won't run under Linux and I'm not giving it up just to have Ubuntu. Others have Linux and love it but for me I have decided to just stick with Windows.
@MatejVugrinecTV Yea,but youll have to use wine. Best off looking for a linux equiv. First time i installed Ubuntu i spent a while (cough) trying to run utorrent....only to find that transmission was installed as standard!
@234blogger IMO and on machines that i multi boot on it starts faster, uses less memory and crashes are very rare, compared to win 7 ultimate 64 bit. There are pros and con to both OS's or windows to linux generly...DUEL boot all the way!
I've tried different distros of Linux over the past couple of years including Ubuntu. I've got to say that Ubuntu and all other distros SUCK. Just my opinion. I know there are those that luv Linux and thats fine but for me....I'm a confirmed Windows guy. Windows works fine for me, I'm happy with it and I guess thats that.
Does anyone know what ubuntu version i should install for a Intel Core i7-2600 CPU, i want a 64 bit system, but there's so much choice i have no idea what i should do. By default the AMD64 version was downloaded, but is that the right one for a Intel CPU?
After much distro hopping over the past few months I feel strangely at home with Ubuntu 11.10. Unity feels like a very intuitive way of working to me and I wouldn't consider myself that much of a "noob." I can see myself sticking with it beyond 12.04. The only other distro that is catching my eye at the moment is elementary OS Luna. Their upcoming release looks promising.
@NewportCraig Same here. I started with Ubuntu, and did some distro hopping, but always came back to Ubuntu. Though same as you, elementary OS Luna is looking really nice, especially the speed of the system.
@JayQuinn1994 yes, steam works, but you have to install something called WINE to get it running. Also, you can run into issues with certain games. Just Google the name of the game you want to play + "WINE" to check that your games will work. Most do. I play a lot of TF2 on Steam in Ubuntu.
If you're a big PC gamer and like to play new releases though, best to stick with Windows or at least "install alongside Windows" when you install Ubuntu so you can use Windows when you want to play games.
@M1MCKay It's been worked on longer then lion, and yes both do suck and I'm not a fan of windows, I just have used both and felt like shooting myself after using them.
great review

I wish linux or Ubuntu would look more polished than it does, as polished as OSX or Morphos.
I also think they canonicl should include MS fonts, like Times, Times new Roman and others.
Ubuntu might be better than before, but I wouldn't install the way it is.

it can't win against OSX, nor Windows.

Ubuntu>MAC>Windows
People, an operating system is a graphical user interface (gui) with a set of apps stacked on top of a kernal. (Linux, Darwin, NT)
Basic diff between OS kernels & stacks: With MAC you get a 100% free open source kernel called Darwin with a closed source apps & gui stacked on top
With Ubuntu you get a 100% free open source kernel called Linux & 100% free open source apps and gui stacked on top.
M$ you get closed source kernel & stack based on Windows NT & lots of viruses

@eeshanmulye12 That is quite some valid points that you've got there. I do think you should move right along with Windows, since it's what you're used to.
But if you have interest in Linux or Ubuntu in general, which I believe since you've brought your comment to this video, I would encourage you to have a 2nd PC with some flavor of Linux, since it does pay off getting the grips of what I believe is the superior OS for desktop computing.

I was going to use Windows Server 2008 to make a Minecraft server. I think I will just use Ubuntu instead. It looks a lot better.

Thank you so much for the video! I just downloaded Ubuntu and I'm loving it! I've been using it for 2 hours now and I have to say it's a very friendly OS. There's lot of stuff to learn, of course, but it's ok, challenge accepted! :D

in my opinion, panels were the shit. the full screen is nice but i hate that all the options are always at the top even if its not full screen.

Is it faster than Windows?
234blogger 1 month ago
@234blogger Ofcourse this only has 512 mb :)
RSSDFTW 1 month ago
@234blogger IMO and on machines that i multi boot on it starts faster, uses less memory and crashes are very rare, compared to win 7 ultimate 64 bit. There are pros and con to both OS's or windows to linux generly...DUEL boot all the way!
7eoj 1 month ago
@234blogger - Only tortoise's are slower than windows.

I have no fucking clue what this guy is talking about. I'll stick to windows

NewportCraig 1 month ago

NewportCraig 1 month ago
is this good for gaming? so would steam work on this OS?
