I took lessons with her over the course of several years and she naturally had a profound effect on me and my playing. My sister was born deaf and I was able to introduce them once. This influenced my sister to eventually become the best lip-reader and vocalizer in her entire school. Evelyn is pure positive energy. Talk about an awesome group, too! Trilok and Frith?! :D
i don't think she is completely deaf.. but yeah imagine only being about to hear the most basic part of a sound.. to the point where you get more out of feeling it.. I don't know but I think she's a really unique and interesting soul that is worth listening to.
Very few people are fully deaf, i think only about 4% of deaf people I heard once (dont quote me on it though). Evelyn is profoundly deaf. Which means a sound has to be at 90dB or louder for her to hear it. It is the most severe deafness before being able to hear nothing at all
Ok, so what if she is only mostly deaf what do you want 75%, 90%? Still a major talent and it is possible to just feel the music. I have known people who were diagnosed as blind. They can see patterns and colors but nothing specific.
Much like me without glasses only their vision is not correctable. Lighten up, enjoy the music, save your cynical comments for politicians.
oh god you'll be telling me Stevie Wonder ain't blind next. Please. When you hear such works of genius does it matter what 'disability' the person has, let's just focus on the 'ability', which is to produce music of this quality and beauty.
That the deaf community is so incensed by Evelyn Glennie is amazing. Evelyn is PROFOUNDLY hard of hearing (deaf). What she has achieved is considered by most to be inspirational and not some sort of cheap trick. Evelyn will not be drawn into what has become a rather dull topic and just gets on with doing the best she can with what she has - Can all the detractors who churn out these endless and often unfounded criticisms say the same? Please research your facts and dont publish gossip. Thx.
Germal59 you are such and idiot. First of all learn to spell correctly in your own language.
Evelyn is NOT deaf, and noone ever said that, it's just a big misunderstanding because she actually does have very LIMITED hearing. Because of that she was even rejected by the Royal Academy when she first applied. Later she got accepted because her talent was undeniable.
Her career was not build out of pity, she has been persistent from a young age regardless of her disability, and she never has capitalized on it. So to speak of it in absolutes is negligible considering her talent warrants recognition regardless of her hearing impairment being often classified as deafness. Cute little fact though...
I think that whomever put this vid together gave us a good taste/sampler of the event, and left us wanting to buy it, or see them live. After all, you DO want to actually support some of these artists, no? Any working musician will appreciate that, I think.
It's frustrating watching this and getting into it and then it just cuts to a different song or part of a song. I guess thats youtube for ya'. I would really enjoy watching a more complete version of this show in decent quality.
Improvisation at its best. Talent like this is usually ignored by most people. Is it true that most people like simple music, justo fit in with their peers
The festival was in Eindheoven (Holland) and called 'Tromp'. It was also a competition for young musicians and this particular year 2006, focussed on Percussion.
Trilok Gurtu was rejected from Berklee when he applied....... Is Berklee a real music college?.... or a nest for grammy awards losers?........ Just wondering.....
In my humble opinion, these three musicians are so talented they could be flicking through the telephone directory and make it sound good ..! Thank you for sharing the video, onefunkymoped.
evelyn is a complete musician and although her hearing disability may have won her some noteriety, this DOES NOT diminish her musical ability, and for the record if you really knew yours stuff you would know that she can here sound....the term profoundly deaf doesnt mean she can hear nothing....if you dont agree go to her website and check out her hearing essay....case closed
Actually, I have every one of his CD's, apart from the crappy dance-crossover rubbish he did a few years back, which was ill informed from what I could hear. I haven't bought anything since African Magic, which was barely passable.Living magic is his best solo album in my opinion. The work with JMG is outstanding. The trio featuring Dominique Di Piazza being my favorite.
I think Gurtu was only being polite and gracious, an Indian attitude, by accompanying artists such as Glennie and Fith. Perhaps Gurtu merely lent his name and cameo to help these two friends of his. Otherwise what's the master of fusion doing with wannabes?
bollox. wannabes? are you serious? Do you know how prominent Frith and Glennie are in their repspective fields? Glennie is a world renowned classical percussionist (she's also deaf), Frith is known globally for his work in the NY free improv scene.
That's the problem with us all. We're merely patronizing those who live with some disadvantage. The right thing to is to give them equal respect and consideration. On stage they're equal and to be treated on a par with other artistes. This would help them to grow creatively and reach beyond their handicaps as the lady has done. I mean no disrespect to the two artistes; they too are accomplished but to their own limitations. I appreciate your attitude.
Are you aware of Gurtu's musical path? How can he be called "The Master of Fusion", when he does not even call himself a jazz artist? trilok gurtu is, above all, a master indian percussionist. Also, who's calling Evelyn a wannabee? Do musicians actually gain worlwide acclaim through pity from millions of fans?? Check your ideas man, it's insulting.
