i have a 12v car socket phone charger that i wire onto the bike 12v battery... so i can charge my phone, GPS, laptop anywhere on the move.. even have a cable going from the battery into my tail bag to charge my laptop.. all works really good.. make sure your using the transformers and adapters tho... dont want to pump 12v into a 5v phone lol
i applaud the organisation, ive got a bike trip thru europe next week and have bought a 'freeloader' solar panel kit to charge sat nav, camera, radios and phone on the go
Wait till he figures out that he's left no room for himself on his bike. Going through Mexico, he might as well post a sign on his back that says; "Please come rob this silly Gringo."
I go on long trips with my buddies. The longest was 10 days. The only things I need are, tent, folding chair, dry bag, sleeping bag, old clothes that I throw away after i wear them. Toiletries bag, nobody likes a stinky man. It is tough to pack. If I don't have something my buddies doses. One time Mark pulls out a wash tub to wash our cooking tools. Come to think about it I take almost as much as this guy... :)
Each to their own I suppose. A 10 day trip really shouldn't require all that guff. I know people like to be prepared and cover all potential eventualities etc. But at the end of the day all you need is a change of clothes, a tent, a bed roll, a mini stove, a mess kit, a spork and a camera/mobile phone. GPS is nice but really, its continental USA there's usually only one straight line between the next way point.
I get to planning sometimes and just groan at all the crap I *would* have taken ..
You bring chain lube, do you ever clean your chain or just lube it every night? Also, do you have some sort of a stand or do you just use the lube/move bike forward/lube repeat method?
I haven't been comfortable riding with headphones, but I live in the Boston area, to being able to hear traffic is desirable. I'd imagine that out on real country roads (which I get to very rarely), they'd be a lot safer.
You could get skip the little photobank thing. I'd imagine that 10 memory cards still takes less room and weight than the hardware. Probably a minor concern, but it's also probably quicker to change cards than to dump your photos to the hard drive.
Man your bringing way too much stuff with you. Why bring a tri-pod when you can just sit the camera on a rock or something? I much prefer to ride very light and hard core. It makes it much more interesting. How do you get more fatigued riding without things in your ears? listening to an mp3 player while you ride is very dangerous anyway.
it looks like an iphone might be a good investment for you. the gadgets you've got there (aside from the hi-res camera) are all included. GPS, ipod, phone, reasonable quality camera, and internet...
What do you do about laundry when you're on the road? Do you really take 10-14 days worth of clothes or do you do laundry somewhere? Or do you just smell really bad? lol.
Thanks for the tips, but I think I'll leave all the gadgets at home. Only problem I'm having at the mo, is where I'm going to put all my other bits as I'm camping on my way. Guess I'll bunjee strap them over the pillion pad
Headphones are Etymotic ER6i (Amazon should have them). As for the the Photobank. I've had problems with it. I wouldn't recommend it. If you still want it, go google around for it.
Wouah it is so much how i do when I prepare a trip, without so many electronics, but still we always take some. The bags to remove the air is great. I will copy you, eh eh. Ride safely.. Francois
I'm wanting to rig up a 12v charger to my bike... any tips? Is there something that has a quick release? I'm wanting to put a GPS in my pocket but will need to have 12v charger attached also.
I use a powerlet outlet to charge all my gadgets. There was nothing special about wiring it up. I hooked it up directly to the battery. This means that if I have anything plugged it will drain the battery if the bike is on or off. If the bike is on, then of course that's big deal.
If you want the power outlet to switch off when you turn the bike off you can run the wire through the headline wire I believe. Don't quote me on this though.
It's amazing how much of that has been replaced by a smart phone. I know this is from 08.

On long days with 10 hours of wind noise, I get fatigued.
I don't think riding with music is dangerous. Been doing it for years.

Most places I travel to don't have very many cell towers. Any cell phone with GPS isn't going to replace a Garmin GPS.
That "all in one" gadget is a nice idea, but it often falls short and individual devices are necessary for what I need to do.
That's my take on the matter.
