The influence of Beethoven is clearly enough! However, it is equally clear that Ries lacked Beethoven's genius. Nevertheless, this is a well crafted concerto and I am enjoying listening to it
@Cantormatis It is much better than nice, it is extremely well written and put together. Solid craftmansship, and Ries wrote it for himself, because he was a formidable pianist. Beethoven was not for nothing friends with him. He respected Ries like he respected few others. And that says enough to me.
As much as I enjoy listening to this composer, it is clear why he (and others) have stayed in the shadow of Beethoven. Ries's style sound similar to Hummel and others: virtuosity and belcanto for piano, but no real advancement over the Classical composers. Chopin also followed in the same footsteps, but his superb gift for melody helped him to get to prominence. Let it be a lesson for us all that without bringing radical innovation in life we will not reach remembrance in posteriority.
@RomanticSoul01 Ries was NOT in the shadow of Beethoven, he was very famous in his day and Ries was the one who got Beethoven's works published in England. Ries spread Beethoven's music all around the place and was one of the few true friends Beethoven had. People who knew both men said there was an uncanny resemble between them in appearance and temper.
another gem of a work by the liitle known ries - living in beethoven's shadow is tough but he deserves better - works like this need to be uncovered and performed more often - thanks bartje

Whether or not one would consider Ries a true master? No, but the orchestrations are very nice indeed; the piano writing is also nice.

@RomanticSoul01 Ries secured the commission of a symphony in London for Beethoven, which would become his 9th.
