I don't think Jalen Rose know's what the "Uncle Tom" epithet really means. So Grant Hill betrayed his own ethnic group by participating in its opression? Or he was being subserviant to the White people at Duke? I know he tried to change the meaning of this some but that doesn't fly. Doesn't seem to make much sense to me. I like people that speak their mind but I think maybe Jalen is still a little bit green in the face from not being wanted by Duke. A two parent middle class home? Give it a rest
It's a joke that Jalen's comments got so blown out of proportion. In the documentary, he was speaking from his 17 year old view point. So idiot's like Skip Bayless criticizing them now is ridiculous. Lots of respect to Jalen Rose for speaking his mind and saying things that some people may not want to hear. His opinion is just his opinion, and many agree with that opinion also.
Jalen is right but you can't blame Duke for recruiting those kinds of players. It's one of the most prestigious universities in the country. Also, the kinds of players that Duke recruits are more likely to stay 4 years.
It honestly looks like he's reading from a script. Like all news channels. The script is on the fucking camera or something. I know it. Look at the way he's looking away every 2.5 second. Just look and you'll realize.
whenever i see jalen rose in a video; he always comes out of it the better man. good job jalen. its rare to see such well-spoken people on tv nowadays.
Jalen was just saying that's how the world viewed the Fab Five and those type of players in when he was a teenager before college basketball teams began to recruit more "inner-city kids" and players with high athleticism in order to increase their rank. He was making a point that back then, private schools didn't recruit those guys. Now, it's not a surprise to see that. And that of course has lead to the "one and done" recruiting, most notable by John Calipari and Thad Matta.
Skip Bayless (the man who asks Rose about Brand and Hill) is an absolute fucking half a fag its no wonder he is hired by ESPN which are full of these fuckin retards.
The reason Duke doesn't recruit in low income areas is because you have to meet certain standards to play at Duke. You have to make a certain GPA and SAT score. They don't hand out scholarships to ignorant athletes like most schools.
@bigfrotes9912 Yeah, like most of the low-major schools. Schools also want to maintain a certain standard or image. Some just have their priorities in different order. Private schools need big endowments and more boosters, they want the rich family kids so they can get more money in the future.
Jalen Rose got into trouble by being at a "crack house" at Michigan. There are reasons why coaches like Coach K didn't recruit Jalen Rose in high school. I don't think Mike Krzyzewski should be criticized for not recruiting that "type" of player. He has the right to run his program how he wants to run it.
Why did that idiot ask Jalen if they did a disservice to their black heritage to go to Duke? Wtf? That was the most moronic question ever. Nobody ever does their race a "disservice" by going to a school or working a certain job or acting a certain way(other than racism). They're really prodding at Jalen trying to get him to make comments he's not trying to make here.
I never thought Jalen Rose was the quintessential black guy who moaning about now the world is out to get him. This fucker has it better than most and he has the nerve to moan like a little bitch.Grant Hills comment but this fucker in his place.
P. 59 of 1996 book “Change The Game”: NBA player Grant Hill tells of a Georgetown recruiting visit and academic advisor Mary Fenlon asking him to read from a book. Unrelated: Ben Powers as NFL player Keith Anderson in “Florida’s Homecoming: Pt. 2” ep. of CHICAGO-set sitcom “Good Times”. In it, Florida gives Michael a gift of black leaders’ quotes and Anderson is set to marry Thelma; pull her family out da ghetto. ANDerSON: born 2/13/49—2nd b’day of Hill’s CHICAGO-born Duke coach, Mike KRZYzewSKI
Rose is so fucking disrespectful. Duke recruits kids from private schools because that's where the best basketball players are because the schools pour money into their athletics programs. He's just bitter, and he shouldn't be. He had a solid career, get over it already.
Who cares if Coach K has never been in Detroit. Obviously, there was no National Championship caliber talent in Detroit. Jalen was not recruited by Duke because of the dumb stuff that comes out of his mouth like these "irresponsible and inflammatory remarks". I will bet you that Duke is thanking their lucky stars that they did not recruit this buffoon!
@kaiserklan you sound like an idiot. how can you deny jalens talent? he was a good leader and did what was needed to get the job done. your just to stupid to see what he is saying is true. he isnt bashing the duke program or coach k. he is making a simple statement saying how they recruit and what the recruits are expected of at duke
@mrhaha79 How do I sound like an idiot? Jalen was talented, but not Natinal Championship caliber talent. You say he did enough to get the job done, how many titles did he win? How many did Coach K win with the players he recruited instead of Jalen? Jalen and Jimmy, obviously were not Duke caliber. All that means is they were not Championship caliber. It is Rose with the problem, not me and certainly not Duke or Coach K.
@mrhaha79 Take notes on how I responded to that without personally attacking you or Jalen. It is a civilized way of having a conversation. You ought to try it.
@kaiserklan Looks like someone completely missed the whole point of the video. And I mean completely. And Jalen explained it very slowly and very precisely what he meant exactly, so you're either a complete moron because you willfully ignored those comments, or you're an imbecile because you don't understand them.
@Barachat I listened to it and I listened to how he "felt" as an 18 year old. I disagreed with the way he felt then and I disagree with the way he feels now. The problem with people who feel like the world owes them a living is that they never see the other side. I am completely sure that Coach K never lost any sleep over not recruiting a person or person like Rose. Coack K's record speaks for itself. He does not recruit "questionable" talent. Jalen needs to deal with that.
@Barachat Did you notice how I responded to that woithout calling you a name or challenging your intellect? It is a civilized way of having a conversation, you ought to try it.
I'm a young black male. I understand how jalen felt because us kids today feel this way. Duke has been known to recruiting a lot of white basketball players. I have a mother and a father who make sure i dont have to resort to violence or crime to get what i need.
Skip Bayless is a piece of shit that doesn't know anything about sports. I have no idea how he works at ESPN without any knowledge of sports. I hate his guts. He's annoying as fuck. Fuck him. His name itself drives me nuts. Fuck you skip bayless. You're fucking gay.
@goblue918 wow you're argument against him is so compelling. You hate his guts he's annoying. You don't like his name and he's gay. wow how have you not won a pulitzer?
late...anyway, I really dont see what the fuss is about. All Jalen was doing was giving his truth as he sees it through hsi eyes. Unfortunately in this country that is not acceptable. He said something that we all say in our minds when we see a boy named Tyrone Jenkins from Compton playing football or basketball for Stanford.... am i lying?
Nice to see the media give the whole story! I understand how Hill was offended, but Jalen just needed to make clear that what he said was how he felt THEN, not now.
Also a lesson: your point gets missed when you use words like "Uncle Tom".
I agree with Jalen...thats real talk. It's so many kids from the inner city that can play ball, but is not seen due to them being from (the inner city).
FAB 5? More like FAB 4...C-Webb was unfortunately too much of a pansy to be a part of documentary where as Rose went on and said it like it is. That takes guts.
@DaPerceive9 University of Michigan is a really good school in its own right. But you're misunderstanding what Jalen is saying. It's not about who's "smart" enough. That doesn't mean anything. Aside from that, Jalen's level of intellect is painstakingly obvious. The Duke brand is based on an image that's contra to the inner city ethos. Also, you have to consider that Jalen is talking about how he felt as an 18yo boy; not a 38yo man. Understand the naunce.
these players at DUKE if no basketball theyed be playing golf or on wall street in an office chuckling over stupid shit, you throw a street kid like jalen in that mix hed be having the music stop and everyone looking at him thats all Jalen is saying the FAB 5 were gangsta and it showed wit the ball they played wont forget that timeout tho... MEDIA loves to start wars the funny thing is grant hill was that smart for school but couldnt see the black on black crime the media was setting up F54lyf
Shit Jalen, everyone had you back and saw the sense in your argument, then you get a DUI? Kinda undermined your point bro. He's still right though; Duke absolutely recruits a certain type of black player and still does. Nolan Smith? Seth Curry? Austin Rivers?
@cschnei08 It undermined his point? Uh, didn't Bobby Hurley, a guard who played opposite Rose in the Championship game, have some issues like that? I think your lack of history undermines YOUR point.
All people heard was Duke, Black Players, Uncle Tom. What they didn't listen to was "I was jealous of Grant Hill. He came from a great black family(which was what Jalen wanted) He had a father who played pro football and is a successful businessman who had a great relationship with his son(which was also what Jalen wanted) I resented that MORE THAN HIM". Which means that could've been anybody not specifically Grant Hill. Just so happens it was Grant Hill.
@bdeviled11 I'm not standing up for Jalen Rose, but he makes a point to say he was an 18 year old. That is what he thought THEN, not now. He makes a very valid statement about Duke and who they recruit, and I'm white. If you watch the documentary he is definitely speaking in the past tense, and he makes a point to say he was bitter at Grant Hill's upbringing....not Grant Hill. I actually hate Michigan and the Fab 5 is only thing I've ever liked at that school.
Racist...are you stupid? Are you even paying attention? Christ...some of you white people will do ANYTHING to try and label black people RACIST. Look up the definition of 'racist' before posting garbage again. Nothing he says has anything to do with racism
The FACT is Duke DOES recruit a certain type of players. Thats the truth. They DO NOT recruit inner-city urban low-income kids...Thats a fact....ALso, he said thats how he felt at 17 years old! Not now. He had no filter a most kids don't. But everybody overlooks that. Does he think Grant Hill is an uncle tom? NO cuz he's not. And NOBODY has YET to address the RACIST LETTER FROM DUKE ALUMNI........NOT EVEN THE UNIVERSITY.........
A lot of the black community still feels that way about Duke... Whenever you hear a black guy say Duke lacks "swagger" or "edge" that's what they mean.
Not in recent years (hint) but in the days of GRANT HENRY Hill & Shane Battier, Mike Krzyzewski (b. 1947 in Chicago) was fond of saying his players were really smart—even potential U.S. Senators after doing the NBA.

I will bet you that Duke is thanking their lucky stars that they did not recruit this buffoon!
kaiserklan 2 months ago
@kaiserklan you sound like an idiot. how can you deny jalens talent? he was a good leader and did what was needed to get the job done. your just to stupid to see what he is saying is true. he isnt bashing the duke program or coach k. he is making a simple statement saying how they recruit and what the recruits are expected of at duke
mrhaha79 2 months ago
@mrhaha79 How do I sound like an idiot? Jalen was talented, but not Natinal Championship caliber talent. You say he did enough to get the job done, how many titles did he win? How many did Coach K win with the players he recruited instead of Jalen? Jalen and Jimmy, obviously were not Duke caliber. All that means is they were not Championship caliber. It is Rose with the problem, not me and certainly not Duke or Coach K.
kaiserklan 2 months ago
@mrhaha79 Take notes on how I responded to that without personally attacking you or Jalen. It is a civilized way of having a conversation. You ought to try it.
kaiserklan 2 months ago
@kaiserklan Looks like someone completely missed the whole point of the video. And I mean completely. And Jalen explained it very slowly and very precisely what he meant exactly, so you're either a complete moron because you willfully ignored those comments, or you're an imbecile because you don't understand them.
Barachat 2 months ago
@Barachat I listened to it and I listened to how he "felt" as an 18 year old. I disagreed with the way he felt then and I disagree with the way he feels now. The problem with people who feel like the world owes them a living is that they never see the other side. I am completely sure that Coach K never lost any sleep over not recruiting a person or person like Rose. Coack K's record speaks for itself. He does not recruit "questionable" talent. Jalen needs to deal with that.
