If I correctly recall at the moment, this superb instrumental arrangement by Mort Garson, who passed away a few years ago. At the beginning of the second verse, there's a superb coupling of high violin and piccolo. Heard in the occasional Lettermen song. E.g., the intro of "Baby I'm a Want You" from their 1972 "Spin Away" album.
@dwsingrs Friend, I'm sure there is nothing wrong with your memory.... you highlighted one of the major things the Lettermen had going for them over the years - the many fabulous arrangers, both instrumentally and vocally that only enhanced their tremendous "sound". Mr Garson was undoubtably one of the very best around at that time.
The cosmic parody of life: always quick to turn this genre off of the radio when I heard it in my 20s--elavator music, we called it, only to find it the most appealing, lovely sound today in my late 50s. Thank you for posting this type of poetry in motion
Another wonderful song by the Lettermen. I don`t know why they`re not as popular in Germany as in the US or UK. Their singing is more than a feeling...... Thanks.
i love this song.. this song fits my life perfectly. when my future husband and i split up this is all i listened to for weeks. months went by and he contacted me again... i went to see him and that was it... i wanted to be with him again. i want to be with him for the rest of my life... we are madly in love and have a precious little baby boy... baby a month old yesterday
Carol Kaye played the bass on this song.... Carol's a bass legend.
I remember hearing this song play on the AM radio while sitting in the back seat of the car while my dad was driving us to go see the Blue Angels Navy jet acrobatic flying team at Point Mugu in Oxnard CA, I forget what year, 19sixty-something.
The sun was glistening off of the Malibu Coast, driving along PCH. Even now, that roadtrip from South Central LA was just epic.
@DancingSpiderman Hi Joe, your excellent memory would probably have been in 1969 when this song was released..... thanks for sharing it with us all, I love to bring back memories like this for people!
@lettermen1 so many of the songs of the Sixties , I can remember where I was when I heard them the FIRST time they came out on radio. Sometimes if I'm cruising around town, I have pull off the street to stop for a while, so that I don't wreck, because the memory is such a surround-sound occurrence, like it's happening now instead of 4o-some years ago...
@DancingSpiderman I have an abiding memory of arriving at Southport beach here in the UK on a hot Summer's day in the 60's just in time to hear for the first time on someone's radio Connie Stevens new record of Sixteen Reasons.....Total MAGIC!!!!
@lettermen1 I played Connie Stevens Sixteen Reasons to a few TY clips of Southport Beach... that's a really fond memory, letterman1 ! I take it some things have changed since that period...
@DancingSpiderman Yeah, just had a peek at some vids myself and it is just unrecognizable, it has changed completely. Can't take away the memory though!!
@quirpco Thanks, glad you appreciate it. The big band sound is recreated on their new CD, follow the link on my home page. I tried to put it on here but it must be against YT policy!
@lettermen1 yes and he is still alive and kicking. my grand aunts and uncles played a partr in raising me. they helped my mummy and daddy instil in me christian values and i love them.

Somehow my sister got hold of a copy that had 'Promo - Not for Sale' or similar stamped on the label. What did she have to do to get that I wonder lol!!
Not a fav of mine (think I was 9 or 10 at the time), but nice to hear for the trip back down memory lane.
indeed because i use this song to vocalize before i sing for the church congregation phil it works. i better e-mail jim pike again thanking him for influencing me to harmonize and vocals too
This is such a beautiful song...almost the same arrangement that's used in the original Little Anthony & the Imperial's version. Both are TOP NOTCH! Thank you so VERY much for sharing this "delightful blast from the past" with us! You've made my day! :)
Slipping and sliding from the 50's into the 60's ... the best era of our " BADLY MISTREATED " world of today. It's a shame to think of what we see, hear and listen to these days... long , live the 50 / 60's era... miracles like these can never happen again... a once in a life time event. For those who had lived this experience, it was / is the most beautiful memory ever; for those who haven't ... sorry dudes y'all just lose out, partners...!
I put this on my 1969 playlist awhile back, one of 111 playlists waiting to take you back to the music of any past year, all the way back to 1900.
But don't go back for anything but the music, social justice was pretty much in the toilet back then, they were not good times if you were 'different'.
Social injustice will always be with us to the end and I am not happy about that. It's a fact It was " in the toilet " way back then ; we have been " flushing that toilet " over the years and no changes for the better have occurred ... I was born in a society where we were " taught " social values whereas today most people " apply " social / values and acts for their own benefit because they want to be a " somebody " in the public sphere.
Did they have the same producer as Little Anthony and the Imperials? I tell ya, though I was little more than a tot back in the early 60's, it was music and artists like these that gave a much-needed balm to those tumultous times. rodtimmy: I cant think of any woman I would want to see after 34 years. I probably dated a couple dozen girls or more, but never fell in love. Always kept backup girls in case one didnt work out. Endless, never fade still lingers on. Best of all. Beautiful and wonderful... listening to the music of the Lettermen, just makes me remember those good old days.
Perfectly said gorgeous3211! This music never dies. Their concerts are still fantastic and it's so great having so many people posting their music. Thanks!!!
I saw the Lettermen in 1973 at the Palmer House in Chicago. I was 15 and attending a national tournament with my high school debate team. We went to a dinner show at the Palmer House (where we were staying, and what a great hotel!) and had a front table. They were awsome. I'm 51 now and still remember it vividly. Thanks for posting this great song!
What a wonderful birthday present! 4/24 was my birthday. I first heard this rendition in a bar in West Springfield Mass in 1971, when the boy I was in love with proposed to me (we subsequently broke up) However, I have waited a very long time to hear it again. What a wonderful surprise. Thank you so much for posting.
I went on to marry a wonderful guy anyway. We are together 32 years. 3 kids and 5 grandchildren later, if I had it to do over again, I wouldn't change a thing. But I was only 18, it was my first proposal and this songhas a special place in my heart. Thank you again!
Brings back wonderful memories of the man I fell in love with and married. Nice.

Appreciative comments like this make my day!
That's what it's all about, bringing back memories and enjoyment to people, even though in your case it was bittersweet!

I went on to marry a wonderful guy anyway. We are together 32 years. 3 kids and 5 grandchildren later, if I had it to do over again, I wouldn't change a thing. But I was only 18, it was my first proposal and this songhas a special place in my heart. Thank you again!
