  • He's such an artist.

  • Make a bicycle rack that looks like a bicycle. Damn I'm a genius.

  • They're on a road to nowhere

  • This is not my beautiful bike!

  • 19 people apparently need to get a clue.

  • gorgeous...

  • You got to bike with David Byrne. Boy am I jealous.

  • i would love to ride around new york with mr byrne i wouldnt be able to get a single word in i would just listen to anything he says

  • David Byrne great in everything........

  • "Bicyclist". What.

Also the guy at the very beginning of the film... is he TRYING to get his bike nicked? I like these NYC bike racks, though, they look much more practical than the sort we get in the UK (which are usually less convenient than just using a lamppost or one of the metal grille they use to keep stupid people from getting run over).

  • "Yeah...we are almost somewhere!" :P I would love to see that Bike Racks in my City...Good work Mr. Byrne!

  • the last bike company in the USA, Cannondale from Bedford PA, sadly, is moving their welding over to China. You can see it on You Tube.

  • This is retarded, these bike racks are use less

  • @sfiorentino How, exactly, are these useless (which is one word, by the way)?

A little added art and fun around the city ... functional art at that.

Negativity and thoughtless commentary are useless.

  • I read that he designed one to look like a bottle of Thunderbird, but the City thought that it was in poor taste.

  • they dont look so skatable. that the only bad.

  • does he also attend critical mass there?

  • I remember seeing David perform at CBGB's just before he released "Rei Momo". It was the biggest band I'd ever seen at CB's and the most gear onstage. After the show, David went home... on a bicycle.

  • This must be the place...

  • the guitar one is awesome.

  • They're biking down the road to nowhere..

  • That's cool. would have liked to see him involved with the evolution though.

  • his designs seem rather shitty.

  • look's at map.."we're almost ...somewhere"..lol

  • Saw Bryne yesterday. Talked to him a few minutes. Says he aint gonna reunite the Talking Heads.

  • Dave Byrne cycled by me in Barcelona the day before his show :) A TRUE SWORDSMAN

  • yeah, we have these white people in NYC, I guess they think they're artists, but you go down to williamsburg and see some of their art, it looks like shit, and no one is interested in it, I don't know how these people get the money for these galleries. In any case they're fucking up everything driving up cost of living for immigrants like myself. NYC use to be free, now there's a cop on every corner

  • Next time I'm in New York I'm going to steal some bike racks. They're beautiful.

  • Seems fantastic! We've forgone creating beauty for the illusion of practicality! It's ok to put up a creative picture for the sake of advertisement but our daily needs are meant to blend with commercialism! Go David!!!! Another artist placing his easel where no one has dared.

  • is that a philippine flag sticker on byrne's bike?

  • Likely, yes. He recently wrote an opera based on Imelda Marcos' life.

  • I started racing bicycles back in the late '70's as a wee bitty junior and loved Talking Heads '77 but never did I think that cycling and Talking Heads actually mixed! Now all he needs is a 3 pony motor or a 1000w electric hub motor...

  • seems cheesy

  • 1m50s Lyrics for a new song by Byrne (cue bicycling generated music and images)?

    'Yeah -- we're almost -- almost somewhere."

    "I think here -- yes."

"We can go a nice iced coffee."

"And we can kind of walk from here."

  • you got it....

  • @UberSecret DUDE! I will MAKE This song. I have an electronic sampling project called tidewaterdeadfish. I just have to figure out how to get his samples off here.

  • The Wall Street Journal is slipping...this is a useless story...but hey...gotta stay on the cutting edge of in depth, hard hitting,no hold bars and important stories...bike racks...this guys journalistic integrity will be questioned though if he doesn't do a follow up on this story...think Pulitzer Prize dude don't falter now...

  • Are you serious? A reporter can't write about Byrne's bike racks without you snapping?

  • Snapping ? I prefer ~venting~ over a useless "news" story. Sorry if you were offended in some way....Byrne's cool ...the story is weak.

  • Maybe Some people don't get it, but some people do.

These are needed items. His music is great . THIS project, in my opinion is just as impressive as any of his music. EXCELLENT IDEA. Right products, right time, right reason-- and artistic too. Just position them to try to balance the possibilty of blocking the sidewalk, versus the need for cars to open their doors completely for older or maybe handicapped people and you are fine. Way to go DB. !!

  • 2:03 Hes barefoot

    Some people GET IT.

  • Comment removed

  • i wish i could meet him my dying wish!

  • no voy ha montar en bici como urbanita. pero...adoro a Mrn Byrne

  • Down with the riding, but we all know that Davey doesn't don a helmet when the camera isn't on!

  • I like David Byrne's Bike, and the Philippine flag sticker!

  • I'm not sure but i was told there's a bike rack shape as a dog in downtown portland oregon in the pearl that was designed by David Byrne. And he's coming this june for a live show and for the Portlands Pedalpalooza bike-fest.

  • the coffee shop they go in to for the iced coffee is like literally across the street from me.

  • I wanna bike with Dave!!!

  • I find it strange that he wears a watch.. I guess that's the old timer in him..

  • Shit, I saw the trucker lady one the other day. I thought it was awesome.

  • In the beginning, when the man locks up the red bicycle he only locks the front wheel. He should have locked the wheel and frame. You can easily take a wheel off in three seconds (quick release), and run away with the frame and back wheel, leaving the front wheel still on the rack.

  • Great comment CLIBERACKI.

I witnessed a man do exactly that around 47st and Park Ave, in NYC about 30 years ago. He rode onto the curb, flipped some messenger guy's fast-release wheel clamps and rode away in traffic with the whole frame on his shoulder, before a nearby cop could get to him. BRAZEN. People walking all around him too.

I noticed that after that, folks in the area started chaining the FRAME to the signs and carrying their front wheels with them when delivering small packages.

  • Now this guy is resourceful, finding a metal shop and making these bike racks. Could someone please send him to Chicago to do the same thing?

  • Same as it ever was..

  • i love David Byrne!!!

  • that is awesome! I love that idea

  • I think he kinda-like byrned-out nowdays, but "yeah, we're almost somewhere" was a good one.

  • There is no limit to this man's genious: Rock on David, rock on!!!

  • If you finished a book, but thought it wasn't the best you could have done with that concept and idea, would you still have it published?

  • Love the video! haha very interesting I might add. That's cool that you actually took the time to make this video! haha

  • ''Almost somewhere " I like that (o:

    *****

  • LOL David Byrne is the man, I love that last statement he made.

  • man, david.. i really love you!! now and ever

  • Thumbs Up! Cool!

  • is that a montague folding bike?

  • -Bike racks are the new rock and roll.

  • Y, tres Koonz!

  • warhola zapatas

    k.herring perro

    both by d.byrne

  • I'm not a theif but currently feel compled to steal one. But I guess someone beeat me to it cause i'm all around the city and haven't seen 1 yet.

  • I think it would probably be bolted to the ground once a permanent location was found...

  • Some of these would be useless. They'd lock one bike, maybe two, not more.

  • Hillary, is that u?

  • cool

  • david byrne rocks

  • wonder how long till someone steals the racks, nevermind the bike

  • that's what I was thinking! (I'd leave the bike chained to a car parked nearby... safety first!)

  • shit

  • great clip!

  • great!!~~~~~~~

  • Love the Talking Heads. They need to make bike racks prevent your bikes from thieves.

  • lol just look for somebody who has their bike locked, take out a bike lock, and lock their lock to the bike rack, then they come back, and it's, wtf! lol

  • Glamour.

  • MADAME SARKOZY

  • fuck this video

  • cool!

  • take off the stupid symbol of S11

  • 1:00 hilarious

  • old idea, this has been done in cities like Toronto decades ago

  • I thought David Byrne had passed away. I am glad to find out I thought wrong.

  • why are you reading this?

  • Amazing and excellent video..

  • haha at 0:56

  • there is a dedicated bike lane on the manhattan bridge, it's not only legal but encouraged over the brooklyn bridge.

check out the last few seconds. he locked the bike improperly. all you have to do is take off the seat and the bike is gone.

  • Nice designs. Bring 'em over here to Amsterdam. Way more bikes than racks. I posted a car free video example. keep on peddling.

  • que ass

  • Cool video but It's illegal to ride a bike across the Manhattan Bridge. They should of taken the Brooklyn Bridge.

  • Nah All East River Bridges (and specifically Bridges don't go pedaling into the Battery or Midtown anytime soon!) have Bike Paths The 59th St and the Manhattan are on the north sides and the Williamsburg and the Brooklyn are in the median of their respective City landings.

And the Brooklyn Bridge is bustling with tourists. The Manhattan Bridge is much quicker and safer.

  • Loved the video, and loved most of the comments above. Poop on those who post negative comments.

  • ohh so thts him :)

  • i found an old road bike in the bush one day... havent stopped since....

  • haven't stopped finding the same old bike in a bush?

  • These are really cool

  • I'd have to say the rack designs seem rather boring... seems like with a little more thought they could be more appealing and more functional.

  • Note to viewers: the video finally gets to the point (i.e. shows the designs) at 2:17. The fluff before then is not vital to the story.

    (I guess inverse-pyramid doesn't apply to video!?)

  • yeah but the interesting stuff starts at 0:01

    ooooooooooo

  • That's a Bike Friday, right?

  • Looks like a Montague Folding Mountain Bike

  • Looked like a mid-1990s Klein Mantra.

  • Totally, we should spend all our money bombing brown people all in the name of WMD's or fossil fuels of whatever the current administration wants to call them. Better yet, let's get everyone to 'ride the bicycle' wouldn't that be a trip;-) The world would be a cleaner, quiter, more peaceful & loving place!

  • your a fucking idiot

  • And why is that waffledude114 ?

  • you have no idea what you're bullshitting about. You just insult for the sake of it.

  • I was replying to a fundamentalist christian redneck who was saying bikes should be banned. Now get out of my face.

  • You misspelled "you're", and you neglected to capitalize the first word of your sentence. A period at the end would have been nice. By the way, who is an idiot?

  • Are you SERIOUS?

  • Glad that someone is taking the initiative to make biking more fun and safe. Great job David.

  • david byrne has the right idea. anything political has to be artsy and fun so that we get the massage rather than the message.

  • I fabricated those bike racks!

  • Or... the art will bring more attention and eyes on your bike, making it harder for a thief to steal.

  • The guy in the beginning of the video fails at locking.

  • excellent idea! hope more people start to ride bikes. cars are ruining the planet. talking heads are one of my fave bands of all time. glad byrne is still doing creative, interesting stuff.

  • Byrne is one of my favorite intellectuals. He never runs out of ideas. And it goes to show that true intellectuals find ways to get around driving cars. Kevin Spacey and Ed Bagley Jr. are anothers that comes to mind.

  • Kevin Spacey hits on male interns.

  • really, I would like to see an intellect bike in San Francisco for work and everyday commute.

  • Biking in the city is dangerous! I hope he doesn't get hurt D:

People will never know these are bike racks. Or they will start putting bikes on all kinds of famous sculptures (the lincoln monument would make a good bike rack!). j/k

  • David Byrne... was cool, is cool. So good to see he's still kicking it.

  • Cool!
