  • Where can I download this version?

  • @JohnGoodliff This version is from a History of Jazz Video that can't be downloaded. If you'd like a PDF the lead sheet, go to Billy's site.

  • @highway61ru So glad you are enjoying.

  • @firestartertwistedfi This music works for all kinds of situations

  • @JazzVideoGuy It does!, Anyway, I just bought the sheet music. Maybe when I learn it I'll post my version :)

  • i belong to 4, count 'em 4, music streaming sites, and i have been looking for this song. figures i'd find it on you tube! thank jazzvideoguy!

  • @g6martin Thanks for checking it out. How do you like the streaming music sites?

  • @JazzVideoGuy rdio is great, i spend most of my time there. lacks in the catalogue department. mog is ok, good sound, great catalogue, adequate social features, rhapsody= good sound quality, absolutely zero social interaction. and spotify? i dont care for it at all.

  • @g6martin So you prefer a combination of extensive catalogue and social interaction?

  • @JazzVideoGuy primarily, i want the social aspect to find music- see what my friends are listening to, and read their comments about it.

  • @JazzVideoGuy primarily, i use the social aspect to find new music, see what my friends are listening to, and read their comments about it.

  • @g6martin Sounds like a cool way to find out about new music.

  • this is great

it captures the civil rights movement without needing any words

  • you are one of my heroes sir. dr.Billy Taylor thank you!

  • My all time favorite version of this wonderful Billy Taylor song is the one sung by the incomparable Lydia Pense of Cold Blood a San Francisco blues group that was big in the 70s. She still sings at Blues festivals, although I believe the group has disbanded. You'd see this tiny little blonde girl who belted out the most remarkable & heart felt music! This is one of these songs that is so good that it's impossible to sing/play a bad version. RIP Billy Taylor and thanks for this gift.

  • so nice !

  • Awesome - as fresh today as back when this was recorded. A remarkable little piece, RIP Billy.

  • The first time (and up to now the only time!) I heard this was from Mary Traver's early Seventies album, "Morning Glory" album. I loved it. She performed a very moving version. It wasn't until now that I knew who the composer was!

I love this version too! (as I should!). Now I know who the composer is! (Of course, if I'd been paying attention, I probably would have seen his name in parenthesis on Traver's album back in '72 or thereabouts, but since it wasn't my album, I didn't.)

  • He wrote this for his daughter - lucky girl!

  • It says in my music book that Billy wrote this song and her majesties royal board of music don't often get things wrong

  • i had NO idea billy taylor wrote this marvelous reminder that all folk arent free yet.

  • I can never get enough of his facial expressions…..clearly this man enjoys every second he's playing!

  • I really miss Billy T.

  • Rest in peace.

  • good

  • I love Dr. Billy Taylor, whom I know from the wonderful old time fiddler who was inspired by Dr. Billy's visit to his Bronx 5th grade class and went home and asked his parents for a guitar. Evidently Dr. Taylor wrote the music to teach a relative gospel chord changes... and he wrote the lyrics with someone else later down the road. Bruce finished off his show tonight with a tribute to Billy Taylor with this wonderful song. (I'd put this on my channel except for the annoying taco commercial.)

  • what a jazz master. . .

  • this song to me is........Barry Norman and FILM

  • I can't believe I'm just finding out about Billy. A major hole in my jazz collection has now been filled. What a treasure!

  • @campb450 That's exactly how it is with me, campb450. What a genius he is, and how could I have gone around not knowing about him?

  • God Bless Dr. Billy Taylor.

  • I worked briefly with Mr. Taylor at WLIB in NYC back in the early '70's when I started my radio career. Not only was he intelligent and knowledgeable, about the intricacies of this music, but was also very generous with his time as well. The passing of this talented, kind and generous man has left a gaping hole, not only in the world of jazz/music, but in the 'patchwork' of humanity as well. I am going to miss him very much!

  • R.I.P

  • Rest In Piece Billy.

-Thank you for all the music.

  • how can you dislike this?

  • This man was a keeper of the flame for jazz education and jazz awareness ..Not many people achieve legendary status in their lifetime ,but Dr.Billy Taylor achieved that and then some ...We are greatful for the body of work that he's left for us to enjoy..There will never be anyone that will be able to duplicate what he has done and meant to the jazz idiom,so Dr.Taylor take your rightful place amongst the other gods of jazz that preceded you and rest in eternal peace!!!!

  • Jazz Master now with the other Masters! We are so fortunate he played for us and taught us what it means to be free.

  • Jazz Master now with the other Masters! We are so fortunate he played for us.

  • Billy Taylor.

  • Just heard of Billy's passing. R.I.P. Billy, you'll be missed. Your music will live on.

  • Wynton, you're the spokesman now...

  • Everyone please...We HAVE to start giving these treasures of our's, their flowers before they are gone. We have to let them know how we appreciate their genius, talent, and sacrifice. These NON musicians become millionaires, while geniuses of jazz just survive.

    Show them some love.

  • @mumbleora You are so right. It's a pity

  • So glad I saw Billy Taylor at the Kennedy Center in 2009. RIP.

  • RIP Billy

  • Dr. Taylor has been a major influence on this genre for decades. One of the true beauties of this planet. He leaves us a legacy truly worthy of a noble character. A human being devoted and passionate about music. Thank you Dr. Taylor for sharing.

  • R.I.P Billy you added joy to my life. May you find the freedom you always sought.

  • A very sad day indeed in losing Billy Taylor. In addition to being an excellent musician and composer he was one of the finest educators and devoted his life to spreading the wonders of jazz. He was a wonderful, sincere man. RIP. You will be missed, but you will live on forever with these legendary recordings.

  • is a song written by Billy Taylor & Dick Dallas. Originally recorded by Nina Simone in 1967 on her Silk & Soul album

  • Hat off to Billy, that's a catchy ditti.

  • Truly RIGHTEOUS!

  • Who did write this song?I knew the Nina Simone version and I really like this one too.

  • @MrGeorgesProfonde Billy Taylor wrote it! So this is the composer playing his composition.

  • @JazzVideoGuy Ok, thanks for the information!

  • @MrGeorgesProfonde "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free" is a song written by Billy Taylor & Dick Dallas. Originally recorded by Nina Simone in 1967 on her Silk & Soul album. Billy Taylor's own instrumental version, recorded the same year, is used as the theme music for The Film programme on BBC television.

Billy Taylor reports that "I wrote this song, perhaps my best known composition, for my daughter Kim. This is one of the best renditions I’ve done, because it is very spiritual."[1]

  • @MrGeorgesProfonde Billy wrote it. Now it's just kinda traditional.

  • @MrGeorgesProfonde

    Billy Taylor and Dick Dallas

  • I love the way Billy accents with the left hand.

  • Can anyone tell me what he says when he's playing? Is he counting, singing along, what? Thanks :)

  • @wolfo0205 Jazz players often sing/hum the phrases they aim to play when improvising - and i have no doubt that Billy Taylor improvised this whole solo.

  • Such a beautiful song

  • Taylormade by Billy as He wrote it and Lyrics ? Why, is Music today so afraid of Expression and Quality musicianship ,Its all heading to a sporting event :SAD.

  • Are you aware of the Jazz Icons series? A jazz lover's dream come true!

  • beautiful indeed!

  • kl i love the song

  • Why is he so underrated?? Billy Tayolor has personality..

i love this song!! it´s so "gospel"

  • Pure genius...!!!!

  • I've been trying to play this today, picking my way VERY slowly through the sheet music. I thought I'd come and see how Billy Taylor plays it... incredible of course... I once read a book Billy Taylor wrote about Jazz Piano and enjoyed that a lot too...

  • Had no idea this was such a well known America song - I've known the tune for years as the BBC's Film Programme theme.

  • and why not?

  • Well it just never occurred to me that the 'FIlm ----' theme was adapted from anything. Just always seemed like a piece of music written for the programme.

  • @TheConciseStatement Come now, when did the BBC ever do anything for themselves?

  • @BiroDark Ooh, harsh. And I smell a licence fee dodger! Quick! The white van with the huge 90s satellite dish on the roof is coming!

  • @cisserz yes you are - go on! Admit it! lol.

  • I'm would love to play jazz piano, but I don't really know how to start. Is there any one who has good tips for me where I should start with?

  • @jeraadtnooit ... there is a book called the jazz piano book... idk who its by but its one of the best known books on jazz piano ever made... there were like 5 players who recommended it to me and so i had to get it... its quite amazing...

  • you could start by doing C7, F7 and G7 chords then playing random notes out of this scale : C, D#, F, F#, G, A#, C. I just started a while ago and i was taught to do a little bit of improv with those notes every day and there were some nice souding things coming out of that piano after awhile. :)

  • @1loveA7X Thanks, but I already figured that out, now I want to go to the next step, but I don't really know how.

  • dude a good jazz teacher can go a long way, since last time we "spoke" ive learned soo much. if you like jazz alot and want to learn to play either find some really good tutorials here on youtube or pay for lessons, as i said, if you find a really good teacher, its really worth your money

  • ok, thanks for your responses.

  • The blues scale is spelled: C Eb F F# G Bb C

  • cool! thx. im not really an expert so now i know well, at least it sounds the same :P

  • C major blues scale, I might add..

  • @crazyghetto978818

What about it? He's plays the tune in Bb, and he's using a lot more than a blues scale.

  • Lucky .lucky. piano

    A jazz-me-winterblues moment.

  • I like

  • I get chills every time I watch this video or hear the Derek Trucks Band version. Great tune.

  • Perfect!

  • real nice

  • Folks who dig this old gem should check out Derek Trucks Band version. Derek is a virtuoso slide guitar player. His version live at ?georgia? Theatre is pure bliss. Especially if u love the original. Let me know your thoughts if u dig it. Peace- Jaimoe

  • is this who i hope it may be ?

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaight!

  • This is so beautiful song...
