@JazzVideoGuy rdio is great, i spend most of my time there. lacks in the catalogue department. mog is ok, good sound, great catalogue, adequate social features, rhapsody= good sound quality, absolutely zero social interaction. and spotify? i dont care for it at all.
My all time favorite version of this wonderful Billy Taylor song is the one sung by the incomparable Lydia Pense of Cold Blood a San Francisco blues group that was big in the 70s. She still sings at Blues festivals, although I believe the group has disbanded. You'd see this tiny little blonde girl who belted out the most remarkable & heart felt music! This is one of these songs that is so good that it's impossible to sing/play a bad version. RIP Billy Taylor and thanks for this gift.
The first time (and up to now the only time!) I heard this was from Mary Traver's early Seventies album, "Morning Glory" album. I loved it. She performed a very moving version. It wasn't until now that I knew who the composer was!
I love this version too! (as I should!). Now I know who the composer is! (Of course, if I'd been paying attention, I probably would have seen his name in parenthesis on Traver's album back in '72 or thereabouts, but since it wasn't my album, I didn't.)
I love Dr. Billy Taylor, whom I know from the wonderful old time fiddler who was inspired by Dr. Billy's visit to his Bronx 5th grade class and went home and asked his parents for a guitar. Evidently Dr. Taylor wrote the music to teach a relative gospel chord changes... and he wrote the lyrics with someone else later down the road. Bruce finished off his show tonight with a tribute to Billy Taylor with this wonderful song. (I'd put this on my channel except for the annoying taco commercial.)
R.I.P. Billy Taylor, and as WKCR brilliantly said "our jazz universe has just become exponentially smaller with the passing of Billy Taylor."
His memorial is being held in at Riverside Church in Harlem, NYC on January 10th. Hope he continues to play those ivories and ebonies wherever he might be.
I worked briefly with Mr. Taylor at WLIB in NYC back in the early '70's when I started my radio career. Not only was he intelligent and knowledgeable, about the intricacies of this music, but was also very generous with his time as well. The passing of this talented, kind and generous man has left a gaping hole, not only in the world of jazz/music, but in the 'patchwork' of humanity as well. I am going to miss him very much!
This man was a keeper of the flame for jazz education and jazz awareness ..Not many people achieve legendary status in their lifetime ,but Dr.Billy Taylor achieved that and then some ...We are greatful for the body of work that he's left for us to enjoy..There will never be anyone that will be able to duplicate what he has done and meant to the jazz idiom,so Dr.Taylor take your rightful place amongst the other gods of jazz that preceded you and rest in eternal peace!!!!
Everyone please...We HAVE to start giving these treasures of our's, their flowers before they are gone. We have to let them know how we appreciate their genius, talent, and sacrifice. These NON musicians become millionaires, while geniuses of jazz just survive.
Dr. Taylor has been a major influence on this genre for decades. One of the true beauties of this planet. He leaves us a legacy truly worthy of a noble character. A human being devoted and passionate about music. Thank you Dr. Taylor for sharing.
A very sad day indeed in losing Billy Taylor. In addition to being an excellent musician and composer he was one of the finest educators and devoted his life to spreading the wonders of jazz. He was a wonderful, sincere man. RIP. You will be missed, but you will live on forever with these legendary recordings.
@MrGeorgesProfonde "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free" is a song written by Billy Taylor & Dick Dallas. Originally recorded by Nina Simone in 1967 on her Silk & Soul album. Billy Taylor's own instrumental version, recorded the same year, is used as the theme music for The Film programme on BBC television.
Billy Taylor reports that "I wrote this song, perhaps my best known composition, for my daughter Kim. This is one of the best renditions I’ve done, because it is very spiritual."[1]
@wolfo0205 Jazz players often sing/hum the phrases they aim to play when improvising - and i have no doubt that Billy Taylor improvised this whole solo.
